How long before SA and /b/ begin AI griefing?

GTA IV world record attempt continues, dude not dead yet but some suckas, playas, and hos are

May 1, 2008 1:45am

Don't Chinese gold farmers rack up this kind of time every day?

Ya, while impressive, this is probably one of those records that has been beaten thousands of times, but never officially. There have been quite a few stories in the last several years detailing people (usually Koreans) dying at the computer after playing for days straight.

Personally, I've had a few runs between the 14-20 hour mark in various MMO's, but I never had the foresight to contact the Guinness World Record people beforehand.

"much ado about...?"

About probably one of the largest media releases in history, and a funny story that goes along with it.

The percentage complete is not the story line, it's every piece of content in the game. The main story line can be completed in under 30 hours, but to reach 100% game completion you'd probably be looking at over 100 hours of play time.

SleepPhones are headphones in a headband

April 21, 2008 5:00pm

Crazy, I was just thinking about needing something like this after my new puppy decided that my Sennhesier's needed a shorter cord about 2 hours ago.

Like Mr. Crayons, ear buds are already uncomfortable for me, so I can't imagine sleeping on them. That said, if I had a DIY bone in my body, it seems it would be fairly easy to take a pair of cheap headphones with small/thin earpieces and stick them inside of a nice padded headband.

Surgery of item being removed from rectum appears online

April 21, 2008 3:00pm

The part where the doctor started spraying or threatening to spray the other doctors was hilarious.

As for a weird "stuck up the ass story," an aunt who dated a paramedic told me of a guy who had the top of Crown Royal bottle stuck up his ass. He claimed a chick he picked up at a bar did it...

Ted Turner: global warming could lead to cannibalism

April 3, 2008 9:49pm

While this appears to be a completely bullshit and sensationalist statement by Turner, you just put yourself in the same category #8.

Whether his statement in terms of a time frame is accurate or not, an eight degree rise in global temperature is massive. He's right, many crops would be obliterated, the gulf streams could potentially shut down and the sea level would rise fairly substantially.

Comcast Degrades HD Signal to Add More Channels

March 31, 2008 7:00pm

Ditto on Verizon, FiOS has been available about 15 miles from me for a few years now, but it's yet to move any closer. What's sad is that Comcast has a horrible HD channel lineup in my area to begin with. I don't even get Discovery or Science Channel HD, the two I want the most.

Also, as stated in the original forum post, the reason some of the comparisons look so bad for Comcast is that they are compressing already compressed content making the quality get exponentially worse.

Oh, Portland. It's so nice living in the strip club capitol of the U.S.

Not that I've actually been to any.

Love: massively multiplayer world created by lone developer

February 27, 2008 12:58am

Very cool, but I won't get my hopes up. The MMO genre (and gaming in general) is notorious for super cool ideas that never go anywhere. That being said, I'm surprised that I hadn't seen this beforehand; I've listened and read tons of coverage on this year's GDC and haven't heard a peep about Love.

After looking at more screenshots in higher res, it almost looks a little too abstract. I can imagine that navigating and moving around in a 3D world that looks like that would be very hard. Then again, the RPS folks apparently saw it in motion and thought it looked great.

Here's hoping for a playable version in the near future.

Texas students shut down highway and march 7 miles to vote in gerrymandered district

February 23, 2008 12:12am

I'm all for voting rights and stopping gerrymandering, and I don't doubt there are very real instances of this in Texas and elsewhere, but this seems like an extremely excessive reaction.

It didn't say in that blog post (an actual article/news story about this would be nice), but there may have very well been a closer voting site after the first day of early voting. For those complaining about the distance and not having a car, I'm willing to bet that the city has public transportation. Seven miles is what, a 30min bus ride at most? Or they could car pool.

This just seems to be a very manufactured complaint. Not to mention that blocking a highway is both illegal and dangerous.

Galactic Civilizations II: big budget game, no DRM

February 2, 2008 2:05am

Oh, one more thing. You can purchase all of Stardock's games through their own digital distribution website, www.totalgaming.net. That may be a better purchase link than the one provided.

Galactic Civilizations II: big budget game, no DRM

February 2, 2008 1:59am

A couple notes for clarification:

- Stardock, the publisher and creator of the GalCiv series, has a no DRM policy on all the games they create and publish.

- GalCiv II has been out since 2006, and although there's an expansion pack scheduled for March of this year, I believe the submitter of the article (and the link confirms this) is actually referring to Sins of a Solar Empire, a game coming out on February 4th. Although both space-based strategy games, Sins is using a real-time system rather than a turn-based system as is used in the GalCiv series. I believe this is the first mainstream 4X RTS game.

- Sins of a Solar Empire is only published by Stardock, it's developed by Ironclad Games.

- The producer of Sins of a Solar Empire, Blair Fraser, was recently a guest on the PC Gamer Podcast where he was asked about his thoughts on the lack of DRM. His response was basically that he really dislikes DRM and isn't worried about piracy. He goes on to say that he believes Sins will sell more copies because of the lack of DRM. This is in stark contrast to most other game developers and publishers who often put broken and/or crippling DRM on their games to combat piracy. Of course, the DRM is cracked within days (or hours as the case may be) and the only people that have to suffer through the DRM are those that bought the game legally.

First/Worst: Online Nickname?

December 10, 2007 3:35pm

I believe my first, and probably worst, online name was Monsieurbatar, an extremely clever play on masturbator. Of course, being 12 at the time, I thought this was hilarious. This name was used only for a short period on a High Elf Paladin in Everquest.

I then went on to the Everquest random name generator which spat out Lonin, which I still use to this day. I also use Woad (inspired by the woad raiders in Age of Empires), also born from my Everquest playing days, and SmileZ, first appearing in Counter-Strike, coming from a real life nickname and the use of my initials.
