Web Zen: meat zen 2008

"kittens fighting over meat" isn't loading in Flash 9 under Ubuntu. Anyone got another link?

PearBudget -- awesomely simple expense tracking application

The "11 reasons" on their site don't give me a clear idea of the main functions of the application. How would you describe it to this person who's never really attempted organizing a budget before?

Mafia boss: seven rules for running a successful business

Er... my understanding of the phrase "turn [x] to account" is that it means to hold someone responsible for something. What does it mean to turn negative experiences to account?

Play This Free Game Now: Passage

December 4, 2007 10:32pm

I started the game by holding right, and continued to hold right, expecting that the game would present me with some sort of obstacle to overcome. When none presented itself, I presumed that the game was all about holding right and watching the scenery go by, and then I died, concluding that it was a pointless and vaguely depressing little game.

Then I went back to the game's webpage and found out that I could have pushed down at any time in order to find the maze and treasure chests.

Maybe this speaks poorly of my outlook on life; I'm too passive, I just wait for the obstacles to come at me and try to overcome them and wonder what the point was.

Or maybe I'm used to other games where your character always starts at the bottom and walks or jumps upward on the screen.

Meh.

WolfKing's Baffling Warrior Xxtreme Double Circle Keyboard

November 21, 2007 1:21pm

Teresa, it looks to me like the keys on the left are the ones most likely to be used in gaming; 't' for example, is generally used to send a message to all other players in an FPS game, so you'd want that in a place that's easy to access.

I'm puzzled as to why they laid out the right half of the keyboard the way they did, though. You'd probably want to make it easier to type with just your left hand, so why not flip the bottom half around, similar to Randall Munroe's Mirrorboard?

Oh, and for the curious, I learned Dvorak as my first keyboard layout, on a bored summer week, using this course:

@Semiotix, er, I seem to recall that Cory is a novelist, and might have reason to sit down and type in unbroken strings for hours at a time.

Raid uncovers 10 Commandments of the Mafia

@Nonesuch:
What is a "country" but a territory with a government?

I'm honestly curious to understand what Gene Autry meant when he said a cowboy should be a patriot, because it seems to me that the group of "people in America" don't really have much in common with one another but the fact that we make up a political entity. How is it possible to [checks dictionary]... love, support, and defend one's country, without loving, supporting, and defending one's government, when that federal government comprises just about all the identity that people from the East and West coasts share?

Or maybe there's some aspect of contemporary American identity that I'm missing.

I clicked on the link in my email, and a page appeared saying "Verification code not found" --although it appears that I've got my screen name, anyway.
