Monochrom: Nazi Petting Zoo
July 2, 2008 12:43pm
There's a difference between "The Producers" and this clip. "The Producers" was very obviously pointing out that it is the height of horribleness to trivialize Nazis & the Holocaust, and use it for humor and to earn money from it. I don't see where the producers of this little film are making any such distinction. The Nazi here is trivialized & warm-fuzzied up & petted, but I don't see any corresponding shock to the audience of how horrible it is to do so. Sure there's some point in the clip (not the actual event, I think) that Austria is lying about it's past & white-washing it. But that's still not the point.

In the article, it says they don't understand the timing of this move. The timing is perfectly obvious. The Democratic and Republican National Conventions are coming up. The Minneapolis police force recently ordered 230 tazers (coincidence!) The military is sure to be called out on these protesters. It's going to be really ugly.

So, exactly how is this boss being stupid, in listening to his customers say they would be "appalled" to be served by this woman? And taking into account the fact that they would have taken their business elsewhere, thereby hurting his restaurant's income? It's a simple business decision.
Why should this man be forced to put his business and his income on the line because of the statement this woman wants to make? Let her make her own statement, and reap the consequences. He is not required to, and neither is he stupid for refusing to lose income because he doesn't want to back her political views.

June 6, 2008 6:19am
@ Brian- you are mistaken. The woman did not do a noble thing, and get fired for doing that noble thing. She did a noble thing, and then went against her company's dress code. She was asked to put on a wig (I'm sure a scarf or something would have been fine too) and she refused. She was fired for demanding to display her bald head in the workplace, in a customer-service position, against the requirements of her job position (not scare the customers) and the requirements of her boss. She was NOT fired for 'doing a noble thing'.
I'm sorry but I would have done exactly the same thing as that boss. And I'll tell you- in that same vein, when I lived in the Seattle area, I have refused to patronize food establishments that had people with dreadlocks making or serving food. I would POLITELY tell the management about it too, and explain exactly why they were losing my business. What I find to be credibility straining (if it is fake) and just plain pathetic (if it is real) is that none of the people in that room took charge in any way. They should have directed the women/injured/non-fighting people to evacuate, and get a couple other men together and tackle the jerk in the first couple minutes of his rampage, and trussed him up with phone cord or something. Their standing around like that is either a testament to their supreme sheep-nature (waiting for the security guard/police to rescue them) or it's all fake. Since the camera is indeed dated in American format, and the first monitor has NO cord- I say, FAKE!!!!

Dinotopia artist sketches Jehovah's Witnesses who come to his door
June 3, 2008 1:37pm
Actually I have no idea what you are talking about, Antinous. I thought it was a very clear, straightforward response. I don't see how I'm being hostile- I have nothing against you, Antinous. But I see how you (Antinous) are being hostile, and most definitely not tolerant of a religious path that differs from your own.
All I'm saying is that there are two viewpoints here- 1) all paths are equal, (the artist's response) 2) all paths are not equal. If one path is wrong, then it would not be helpful or kind to the person on the wrong path, to make as if their path was NOT wrong. In that view, to merely hand out warm fuzzies to the person on the wrong path is pointless at best, and misleading and detrimental to them at worst.
Why should you get so worked up over my believing that a given path is wrong? Am I hurting anybody? You're just picking and choosing what criteria you believe constitutes the "right" path yourself, and practicing your own form of intolerance.
I have not called anyone names here, I have not been rude to anyone here. I have not been a troll. I think Antinous is very worked up over it, because I have exposed the flaw in his reasoning.

@ Antinous:
It was "the perfect thing" according to YOUR belief system. According to MY belief system, it was not. So, is my belief threatening to you in some way?
And actually I do not advocate "arguing religion with strangers." Unless it is a mutually agreed-upon, civilized debate/discussion, then there is no point. That is why I, myself, ignore JWs that come to my door, remember?

June 3, 2008 12:39pm
@ Cyenobite- Yes, you have a point. But, how did the encounter better the lives of the JWs? It gave everybody some warm fuzzies, sure. It made everybody happy. If one subscribes to the viewpoint that all religious paths are equal, then certainly, it was enough. According to that view, just to hand out some warm fuzzies and teach people to be nice is plenty good enough in this life. No, it wasn't about changing anybody.
But, if you ascribe to the view that all religious paths are NOT equal in the sight of God, then you would likely look on the JW doctrine as cultish and dangerous. In that case, it would certainly be doing the JWs a disservice to validate their beliefs with tacit approval and acceptance. So, that is why I said what the artist did was pointless- it did not change the JWs, only handed out warm fuzzies and subconsciously promoted the concept that all religious paths are equal to God, and thereby lend tacit approval to their beliefs.

June 3, 2008 12:02pm
I had some JWs come to my door today. I politely told them "I'm not interested", and when they continued their pitch, I politely said "I'm not interested" again, and they left.
I learned long ago never to bother with people that are satisfied in their delusions. They won't hear whatever I say, they won't understand it, and they will interpret whatever I say or do in light of their delusions. What this artist did was cute & all, but pointless, except to amuse the artist. The JWs didn't learn anything from it, it didn't change them, it didn't lessen their grip on their semi-cultic delusions.

I don't understand the joke. Hitler was one of the most evil men that ever lived. May 20, 2008 2:06pm
The Homeland Security laws, and the rules about flying being enacted to "fight terrorism" have nothing to do with keeping us safe. Of course, if they were about protecting citizens, then the whole lot is a big, huge, inefficient, inexplicable, utterly unworkable joke. Everybody knows it, and the internet is full of people patiently explaining why these laws are patently ridiculous. But what if it's NOT about protecting citizens, but controlling them? Ah, then they make sense- then, they perform their tasks admirably, and lead to ever tightening reigns of control.
It's a good article Cory, but you're missing the point entirely. The people that are enacting these laws are not afraid of the super-rare events. They are using those as an excuse, just like every other Fascist government dreamed up a bogeyman to scare the populace with, to give them excuses to take control away from the citizens. The nazis did it, perfectly legally, just like is happening now.
Unless you DO understand the point, but you are trying to break it gently to those who don't understand yet, without sounding like a basketcase or a conspiracy theorist?
Ah well I don't have any reason to care if people think I'm a nutcase, I'll just say it.

Yes I use definite words, saying it "will" happen. I have my reasons for thinking so. I agree with Naomi Wolf's message in "The End of America" completely, except for I am not as optimistic as her about this ship getting turned around. Water is a basic human right. It is a dire thing that it is being turned into a commodity. It is part of a vast plan, to control populaces by controlling their water supplies and other basic needs. That is why this depression is coming, it is a final step to controlling the populace of the United States. Food will be rationed, and hoarding will be punished. In the Philippines, hoarding is punishable by death.

US wastes "27% of food available for consumption"
May 18, 2008 12:05pm
The people that are wasting food because they don't know how to can, or dehydrate, or re-use leftovers are the sheep of this nation. There has been several generations of effort devoted into turning this nation into a nation of mindless sheep. They spend their time reading People magazine and believing all the rhetoric (left, right, communist, vegan, Purpose-Driven, etc etc) that they are told. They do things like recycle because they think it is the moral thing to do to "save the earth", when in fact recycling harms the environment far more than a simple landfill would, and it is tremendously expensive, and the only reason it can go on at all is because the government spends millions of dollars in subsidies propping it up.
There's all kinds of rhetoric going on, from all sides. Few people are looking at the bigger picture. Rindan, you are 100% wrong when you say we aren't going to go through another depression. We are, and it's going to be worse than anything we've ever known in the history of this nation. It's going to start in September. You don't believe me? Look here: http://www.leap2020.eu/GEAB-N-18-is-available%21-Seven-sequences-of-the-impact-phase-of-the-global-systemic-crisis-2007-2009-_a999.html
Look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW9PulYpjGs
During the Great Depression, we had a nation of people who could make do for themselves, who were ashamed not to work, who knew how to can and dehydrate and use herbs, and make something out of nothing. Today most people we meet are absolutely clueless, they don't have the skills nor the character to make it. It's the people who read blogs like this, and who are the driving force behind MAKE magazine and the do-it-yourself revival, and folks that can think that have a shot at surviving.
People waste food in America because they are forced to, or because they are too brain-dead or hypnotized to care, or because they don't know any better, they are not awake. The food wasting isn't the problem, it is a symptom! We need to be looking at the bigger picture!
US wastes "27% of food available for consumption"
May 18, 2008 11:03am
Ah yes, the same old "Americans are wasteful pigs" argument again. That's crap. I worked in the food service industry for many years. Nobody I knew wanted to throw away the food. Most people are aware of the waste, and they hate it. #18 Legotech is exactly right. The reason why the restaurants, the warehouse grocery stores, the grocery stores, and etc don't put the food to good use is because they are forced to, for fear of being sued out of existance.
I have asked grocery produce managers to save me the sub-par veggies- they won't, and it kills them to throw it away, they say it. But they just can't! Same reason most dumpsters that I see are locked, is so no-one can dumpster dive, get sick from something, and sue them out of existence.
Everybody hates the situation as it is, everybody except the people who set up this situation. Who benefits? Nationally, who benefits from a nation where the citizens have lost control of how they get their food? Who benefits from a nation of citizens that have lost nearly every civil liberty they had? Who benefits, nationally, and globally? Start asking yourself these questions.
