Living in a space that no one watches too closely is one of the secret ways that people get to do excellent stuff.
Precisely! And that is one reason why I publish online: most people - including bloggers - think“ 'self-published crap' and pay little attention. Consequently I can do exactly what I like in my fiction - without worrying about sales, without worrying about an editorial stamp of approval.

Details create verisimilude, or the illusion of verisimiltude - in film as in fiction. Whether Gibson is right or wrong about this particular detail, he is undoubtedly right to be thinking about it. However, there is a tendency in some SF to sacrifice other literary qualities - style, psychological depth etc. - to world-building.
