I feel like a dumb ass for misspelling 'amend' But that's okay. I feel like a dumb ass most days as soon as I wake up, which requires a pot or two of good coffee and sufficient nicotine to both start and endanger my heart muscle.

A totally blank Rorshach?? Wow! I think I deserve proper papers for failing that particular test.

true love. It always hurts so sweet. I do understand. Life is hard, but if weren't for the poignant moments then why bother at all.

Of course, I can see and assume that a person with a more republican state of mind might just say, "Oh cool! Hot Wheels!"

"Bugs beware!" Both the bunny and the insects.

One can not. At least not this one.

Untitled 1

April 25, 2008 5:27pm

I would like to ammend my earlier suggestion that the classic 2.jpg be considered as cover art. This photo of a Robert Ryman collection would be much more appropriate: http://www.artnet.com/artwork/424933280/826/robert-ryman-no-title-required.html

I also found a quote from this page concerning minimalism quite appropriate, http://artnetweb.com/abstraction/chrome.html
The author states that Frank Stella's quote 'What you see is what you see.' "encapsulates Minimalism's adoption of a pure abstraction devoid of any spiritual or metaphysical connotations. Minimalism emphasizes the materiality and shape of the object and denies any sense of personal touch in the work's execution."

I thought that quite appropriate as well when the terms 'materiality and shape' are viewed in the context of the internet.

For a description of how this works as translated to the theatre, see this on "Sweet FA" (the play, not the British rockers) though the article describes the effort as nihilistic rather than merely minimalist. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1030805/asp/foreign/story_2234442.asp

Great thread. Thank you, Mark, for getting things rolling.

Horrible story, though; people playing on basic fears for profit like they think they are the US govenment or something.

Luckily, at least in my case, if this is a crime it would be at most a misdemeanor.

Very refreshing, after reading some of the long-winded, or would that be long-fingered?, BBGadgets posts. I think 2.jpg would make great cover art.

Genetically distinct, deadly virus discovered in Bolivia

April 22, 2008 5:45pm

In the spirit of truthiness, I think that almost, or quasi-, or nearly perfect would work for me, in this day and age.

I have the feeling that this particular virus falls within the general parameters of bugs we've seen before, but with statistically, and/or genetically important variance.

I hope it gets the Beni hills name though. He deserves a proper legacy, even one carried by rodent feces. Perhaps we could start a 'net rumor that and appropriate prophylaxis involves drooling over tits or slapping an old guy's bald head.

I need another drink.

Oh, yuck, I just disgusted myself again.

Whatever happened to good old American technology? Why can't we make the sippy straws an inch and a half in diameter, with a nice ergonomic mouthpiece and a built in valve that would release the JuicyJuice in nice little spurts??

Vatican comes up with a new list of Seven Sins

March 11, 2008 8:01am

I see it as a positive trend. At least it is an attempt to stay current, finally, from one of our most staid and unchanging institutions. They are at least attempting to move up into the 1970's, which is an improvement of 2 or 3 centuries.

Overall, though, I have to agree with Christopher Hitchens that one of the worst attributes of modern religion is that it encourages people to settle for deferred justice.

We need a different copyright for individuals

January 29, 2008 10:44am

How about this as an alternative: Only a living human can hold copyrights; not corporations or other artificial beings? The fact that corporate entities have all the rights of actual people, with apparently none of the accountability I find quite appalling. At the very least, these large companies would have an incentive to keep at least one person besides the CEO employed.

Southern racists adopt "Canadian" as a euphemism for "black"

January 27, 2008 2:23pm

As a dingleberry, southern born and occasionally bred, we much prefer the appelation 'Klingon' though that language is as just as much foreign as is the king's English; that being said, just enough to be uncomfortable, as the Brits would prefer. Pity the poor, black Canadians, who wouldn't know a maple leaf from marijuana. Aaaaay?

Laser-cut steel "flat" shelving you bend to suit

January 15, 2008 9:07am

If they are truly lazer cut rather than stamped, then there will be not sharp edges. But why the fuck would you even ask that question, unless you have been hurt before?

Why JK Rowling will lose her suit against The Harry Potter Lexicon

January 14, 2008 11:52am

I have thought for some time now that we should change the copyright law so that the rights can be held by an individual, but not a corporation, being of the personal opinion that artificial corporate beings should in no manner hold any rights equal to or above actual people.

This case makes me rethink that a bit, not in the manner of changing my mind, but just to think it over again.

One million bilked in Chinese ant farming scheme

You look like you're already raising a good crop.

Compound reverses Alzheimer's in minutes

January 12, 2008 3:20pm

Well spoken, schmod, but that's a decision we don't get to make. Whether or not one likes the thought of having one's ass wiped when it needs it, it more than likely will happen whether one wishes it or not.

Having cared for my mother after a stroke, and now for my m-i-l, after a long life and dementia, my advice would be to die now, die young, don't allow yourself the humiliation.

The good thing about Alzheimer's though,...you get to meet new people every day.

The bad thing; you can't remember how to wipe your own ass.

Wiretaps dropped after FBI doesn't pay bills

January 10, 2008 12:00pm

Yes TNH, but are the trains running on time? Of late we have been seeing too much of the downside of fascism, with nothing to show on the up side. I welcome you to argue that with me.

Besides, inept + bureaucracy = redundant.

Wiretaps dropped after FBI doesn't pay bills

January 10, 2008 11:49am

Water always seeks a level, and the two rules of plumbing, as I learned in my first year: Payday comes on Friday and shit don't run uphill.

Perhaps it just trickles down. Will bureaucracy prove to be its own just reward? First FEMA, now this? Or perhaps it's just feeding my own cynicism. Where the hell did I leave that foil hat?

The punishments of China: 1804 book

January 4, 2008 4:31pm

Ummmm, Corpse1, I'm much more conversant with British idioms than of Chinese idiograms, so I believe the correct phrase is, "knickers in a twist!" Thank you, though, sincerely. I'm sure that one day following lots of therapy, I will get over being called 'sir.'

The punishments of China: 1804 book

January 4, 2008 3:41pm

And also this, from http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Cangue
CANGUE, or Cang, the European name for the Chinese Kia or Kea, a portable pillory, carried by offenders convicted of petty offences. It consists of a square wooden collar weighing from 20 to 60 lb, through a hole in which the victim's head is thrust. It fits tight to the neck and must be worn day and night for the period ordered. The offender is left exposed in the street. Over the parts by which it fastens slips of paper bearing the mandarin's seal are pasted so that no one can liberate the condemned. The length of the punishment is usually from a fortnight to a month. As the cangue is 3 to 4 ft. across the convict is unable to feed himself or to lie down, and thus, unless fed by friends or passers-by, often starves to death. As in the English pillory, the name of the man and the nature of his offence are inscribed on the cangue.

How Circuit City Committed Suicide

December 30, 2007 9:08am

In response to a couple of comments here, it was largely the older, more experienced and knowledgable people who were making more money, and thus got downsized, not part-timers by any means but career-minded professionals who had been there a number of years. To add insult to insult, the lower paying jobs they were offered sometime later were mostly temp positions anticipating some holiday rush, which obviously didn't happen.

I guess a lot of consumers are like myself, voting with their wallets by staying away in droves. There are some good comments at the end of the Beat the Press article as well.

For real? The first book you read to yourself? I'm glad I read it when I did, after Curious George, Dr Seuss, the Happy Hollisters, and all the "See Spot Dick Jane" crap I sometimes literally cut my teeth on. But how special the book must truly be to you! I would love to hear how your perspective on the tale has evolved over time.

Thank you for the gift. You really shouldn't have! :)

Merry Christmas.

Scribbly doodleblog

December 24, 2007 3:36pm

I've done quite a bit of reading, and discovered a considerable amount of truly good stuff on Ms. Clifford's pages. It is a true blog, even or maybe especially the comics, which, whl nt th tr jrnlstc mstbtn tht dfns th blg, strikes deep at the heart of why art must be created. Because it must be. Egos and opinions and personal likes and dislikes aside, it exists of its own, and can not be judged, especially not by comparison.

I'm very glad that viewers find her not derivative of one artist, but evocative of another, because this is a true and vital person, in her own right. If you don't like it; fine then; fck ff. r myb tht's jst th mrcn n m cmng t, s ntcd hs lrdy hppnd n ths cmmnts.

Schoolteacher in Sudan on trial for naming teddy bear Muhammad

November 29, 2007 11:41am

I would have to include style points if it had at least been a stuffed pig! I mean, Cheeses Crisps, how freaking anal can a culture be when they can only touch said anus with a single hand? True enough, we in the US are quite spoiled by our constantly dwindling "freedom of speech" and should be more aware of other cultures, but,.....did I say Cheeses Crisps already? Get over yourselves, people named after cheesecloth! There are pure assholes named Mohammed in this world, and it's just a freaking stuffed bear, for Mo's sake!

Someone slap somebody please; soon and hard! :( And buy me a Danish, or a Danish cartoon, while you're at it!

Then again, perhaps she will make a good martyr for our side, even without the peskiness of having to blow herself up.

Google says spammers are giving up

November 29, 2007 7:29am

I have seen a marked reduction in the penile enlargement/overseas drugs/'this stock is hot' spam, with the exception of my Yahoo address which is apparently targeted by hordes of spammers absolutely salivating to buy some imaginary timeshare I don't own.

There has been a similarly marked increase, both in volume and variety, of variations of the Nigerian scam, bogus lottery winnings, eBay and PayPal phishing, work at home, make gazillions off of the internet, etc. etc. emails; more of the phishing/spoofing ilk than of direct sales pitches.

I hope everyone is as diligent as I am in forwarding the spoof emails to the true websites' security mailboxes. They are the easiest to track down, I think, and the legitimate businesses are finally actively pursuing the malefactors.

I could ramble on ad nauseum, but I need to claim my winnings in a UK lotto I've been awarded without even having to enter, and a widow in communist China needs my help in transferring funds from her late husband's estate.

New GOP logo is funny

October 5, 2007 10:17am

That is odd. In honor of Karl Rove's ostensible father, one would think he would at least have a visible penis with a Prince Albert barbell through it.
It would only be fair, as a warning to young Republicans and body-modders everywhere that your progeny will rail emphatically against everything in which you believe, whatever it might be. I must admit, although having been a life-long liberal and believer in the power of people, both individually and collectively, if not personally :), that the young toad-son of the mighty quirksome and troubled god is at least intelligent, if not either well-spoken nor charismatic. The toad-boy was wise enough to steal two elections away from the will of the great unwashed; but it was necessary if the ones who will decide our fate were to load up the supremes with like-minded people who know the value of doing business.

But I digress. When will the people take back their own country, now that our most powerful court has been stolen?

Is it time yet? Apparently not. Let's let that pendulum swing all the way to its highest fascist arc before slapping it back down to true equilibrium, and beyond. :)

Or perhaps the logo is intended to be female, tapping her own toes and running that fine, fine tusk under a restroom partition of her own, in search of satisfaction. But I doubt it. The conservatives would never have a cunt for a logo. After all, they only exist for one purpose. Correct, all Muslims, fundamentalists, and Republicans??

Never mind. Please don't answer. My skin is already crawling.
