Joel Johnson Wilderness Internet Experience

May 9, 2008 9:27pm

By far my favorite BBTV episode yet. I hope we get to see more footage in the future because thats funny shit. See, I'm even starting to talk like Joel I liked it so much and shit.

Didn't you bring along a tent? I remember you mentioned you didn't learn how to put it together before leaving for your adventure. I didn't realize you'd be staying in a "shelter" anyways. Shit, thats still about 300% more roughing-it than I've ever done.

Lightbulb that's burned for 107 years

May 9, 2008 4:33pm

This was featured on a MythBusters episode: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=180639728096740394

Forward to the 6:15 mark to see when Kari, Grant and Tory take a field-trip to the Livermore Fire Station to see the bulb. The Myth they were trying to bust was whether or not you save any energy by turning off your lights rather than just leaving them on all the time.

BBG Weekend Warfare: Boing Boing Team Fortress 2 Server Now Live!

May 2, 2008 2:12pm

Never played before, but I've set up a steam account (LastVigilante) and will maybe try from work (once my boss leaves) or from home this weekend. Should I assume the meeting times are Pacific time?

Wilford Brimley and the five cats who resemble him

Ghost resort in Disney World

April 24, 2008 12:05pm

I don't know about anybody else, but my favorite part of the video was when the tiny bug walked across the lens of the camera at 1:01. That really completed my experience of the environment. :)

Psychedelic milk/food coloring trick

April 22, 2008 10:18pm

Cool. The same thing happens when I add a drop of vanilla extract to the bowl of egg yolks for making French Toast.

Inflatable tube man dances to Cream's "Glad"

April 22, 2008 10:15pm

Awesome video. Whenever I see one of these, or a giant inflatable gorilla/godzilla/clown outside a car dealership, I always ask "Do those things really drive business?" Is there a large population of consumers on the streets, minding their own business, when all of a sudden they think "Well, I was just going to pick up some milk, but seeing that neon-green, flailing inflatable tube man convinced me to buy a new Pontiac instead."

The Internet is maddening for the blind

April 19, 2008 11:51am

@11: Thanks for the update. By the time anything anything happens in the suit, Target will probably have redesigned their site three more times.

If anything does come of suits like this, we may be looking at amendments to the Disabilities Act to include public digital spaces as well. Brick & Mortar stores are required to provide wheelchair accessible entrances, why not their web counterparts too?

A lot, I think, has to do with the lack of education of accessible web development to students in colleges and design schools. All of the colleges and universities I've attended or researched had "web design" courses, but they mentioned nothing of semantics and accessibility. Heck, most of them still taught Dreamweaver and ImageReady WYSIWYG design.

I Want You to Want Me: One of the most touching interactive art pieces I've ever not actually seen

April 19, 2008 11:22am

Wow. I so would have gotten an 'A+' if I created something like that for my Arts Technology major in college.

The Internet is maddening for the blind

April 18, 2008 9:16am

In February 2006 blind users sued Target for site inaccessibility. They wanted to buy stuff from the site, but couldn't because it is completely image based and their screen-readers can't help them find anything. I'm not sure the outcome of that suit, but it certainly shows how this is getting to be a bigger issue.

Since the late 1990s and early 2000s, "accessibility" and "semantics" in HTML web design have been very hot topics. Unfortunately, there are still a lot, a majority it seems, of designers creating non-accessible sites, and the clients who the sites are built for don't know any better.

'Bed Fan' keeps you cool under the sheets

April 17, 2008 8:19am

I sort of want one too. It could be 120F in my room but I absolutely need to be under sheets to be able to fall asleep. I'm also a tuck person, while my girlfriend is an untuck person, so that causes issues.

It seems kinda cheap looking for $100. For that priced I'd just as soon buy a nice oscillating fan to put right at the foot of my bed, and have $70 left over to pay for a couples counseling session to resolve the tuck vs. untuck thing.

Brickarms '08: new weapons for your bloodthirsty LEGO minifigs

April 15, 2008 9:35pm

Ah, geeze. I managed to keep myself from purchasing any the last time you featured them, but this is really too much. Stop tempting me with the awesomeness! What I really want to know is how they made those WWII tanks they have pictured with some of the minifigs. If I could get my hands on those I'd have no choice but to buy the whole set and recreate a tiny, plastic D-Day Invasion.

Datto 500 NAS stores your data off-site, too

April 15, 2008 1:55pm

I don't think the offsite backup is intended solely to insure in case of hardware failure of the NAS itself. I think it would be most useful for other catastrophies such as your office burning down or getting robbed. Situations which, admittedly, are also about as likely as total NAS failure, but you get my point.

MagicJack's EULA says it will spy on you and force you into arbitration

April 14, 2008 11:50am

@#1 There are a helluvalot of "dumheads" out there who already bought and are using this device. If you need help spotting them, there's even an Unofficial magicJack Forum and last October an Engadget article seemed to paint it in a favorable light. They're all in for a surprise.

Old comic book depicts US suicide bomber as hero

April 14, 2008 11:36am

Wow. I'd love to comment on the whole "suicide-bomber" aspect of this, but I still can't wrap my mind around the character located on the lower left of the tank. Is he actually sitting in a compartment that is located within the tank's tracks? That must be uncomfortable.

Corporate Anthems - theme songs of big, soul-less businesses

April 5, 2008 11:08am

Ohmygod, my lil' sister works for KPMG. She is going to get a kick out of this, as am I for every time I see her in the future I get to harass her for working at a company that has its own cheesy theme song.

Then again, she does get a month of vacation time each year, a free expense account and makes about 2x what I make. Humph... I wonder if KPMG is hiring?

Nuclear launch center "blast door" art

April 3, 2008 11:55am

Has anyone ever been to a restaurant with a big group, and one person in the group scorns the waiter for getting something wrong, and then the rest of the group feels... well, awkward? Just curious.

Irregardless, I would've never thought that blast-door art even existed. Then again, they do have a lot of time on their hands. I'm a big fan of the WWII era bomber nose art, and I find it interesting how artistically inclined a lot of the armed forces are. I wonder if there is any equivalent to nose-art or blast-door art in the current armed forces.

200 students and other teens celebrate end of school term with outdoor orgy

I'm surprised no one has commented on the appropriateness of the first three letters of the town's name.

Oh, wait.

Transgender man is pregnant

March 24, 2008 3:22pm

Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

Then I guess I'm not human, since I have absolutely no desire to reproduce biologically or otherwise.

Also, is his wife technically a lesbian? Seriously, I'm confused. What?

Universe's most powerful blast ever seen witnessed this week

March 21, 2008 9:31pm

"Astronomers have placed the star in the constellation Boötes. They have estimated it to be 7.5 billion light years away from Earth, meaning the explosion took place when the universe was less than half its current age and before Earth formed."

Since their headline focuses on "Most Distant Object Visible to Naked Eye" it would've been nice for the Space.com article to provide a star chart so we could actually try and see it with our naked eyes. I'm not all knowledgeable about constellations, but some quick Googling finds that Bootes is off the handle of the Big Dipper. I'll have to give it a look-see, though I'm sure it appears as nothing more than another point of light to the amateur astronomer.

Art film of zits being popped

What You Need to Know About the iPhone and iPod Touch SDK and 3rd-Party Applications

March 6, 2008 1:03pm

@#2 TOMA: Actually, you got your wish. From the Apple press release:

Third party applications created for the iPhone will also run on the iPod touch, and iPod touch users will be required to purchase a software update to run these applications.

It seems the message Apple is trying to send iPod Touch owners is, "Oh well, guess you should've bought an iPhone instead!"

Nine Inch Nails goes Creative Commons remix-friendly with new album

March 3, 2008 9:25pm

From the Torrent:

Undoubtedly you\\\'ll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file, but if you\\\'re interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5.

Its refreshing to see them so open and understanding of the technology and community, instead of hiding under their desks in denial like most other big-name media and entertainment. Just for that, I think I'll plop down $10 for the CD version.

Images of Surgery

March 3, 2008 11:29am

@#2 gandalf23: I'll second that call for a Unicorn chaser. Gahh, I nearly tossed my cookies. Quite literally, in fact, as I just finished eating two chocolate chip cookies.

I hate flipping around channels then coming to TLC, Discovery Health or Dr. 90210 and getting a flash of someone getting their sternum buzz-sawed in half or a close-up of an unidentified part of the body being held open with clamps, much like the image above. The insides of my body should remain just that: Inside my body!

Stirling Engine Motherboard Fans Powered by Waste Chip Heat

February 29, 2008 8:04am

Doesn't this present some sort of Grandfather Paradox, to which I am probably over-thinking? If the fan runs on the processor's heat, but the fan's main purpose is to stop the processor from getting hot, if it cools the processor where will the fan get energy to run, and so on and so on?

UPDATE: Comcast paid for people to fill seats at FCC Net Neutrality hearing

February 26, 2008 2:01pm

Thats it, thats the last straw! When I plan on moving this Spring, I'm going to specifically choose a residence in a township that has the choice of an alternative cable company to Comcast. Its become a top priority in my search now.

As an added note, it seems Comcast is looking to get an early jump-start for the "Worst Company in America" award this year.

Alice In Wonderland syndrome

February 20, 2008 1:09pm

@everybody - Hello. My name is Kurt, and I've had Alice In Wonderland Syndrome. (Hi, Kurt!) You have no idea how relieved I am knowing that I am not the only one!

I use to get this all the time when I was a kid, specifically when I was sick at night. My alarm clock, walls, bedroom window and everything else would appear to be 10-times further away, and my bed sheets would feel like lead weights. I would panic and force my eyes shut, hoping everything would be normal when I opened them again. If I did fall asleep, I would have nightmares with the same sensation. It was absolutely terrifying.

If I describe it to my family and girlfriend they all look at me as though I've lost my marble. But now, finally, validation! All thanks to the BoingBoing Sufferers of Alice In Wonderland Syndrome Support Group (BBSAWSSG).

Phun: a simulated physics playground

February 20, 2008 12:37pm

Echoing #5, the first thing I thought when I saw this was Crayon Physics: http://www.kloonigames.com/crayon/

My favorite part of the Crayon Physics game was the end, after beating all the levels, when they give you a blank page to play around with the physics, drawing all sorts of shapes and building all sorts of structures and watching them topple. "Phun" looks like exactly the same thing, but without the nuisance of having to play game levels to get to the sandbox! Awesome!

Documentary about police photographer

February 19, 2008 8:08am

I thought these looked familiar, I remember seeing a small exhibit of these photographs at the Art Institute Chicago (or one of the other bajillion museums we have) a while ago. It is very interesting to see the aftermath of an accident with the human element removed, we start to make up our own stories on what caused the accident, and what could have happened to the people.

Senate votes to immunize telecoms over domestic spying

February 12, 2008 11:41am

@#4 NICK SHOGUN: Unless I'm misinterpreting sarcasm, Obama actually voted against immunity for telecoms. Those who voted Nay are in favor or providing immunity.

MythBusters tackles "plane on a conveyor belt problem"

January 28, 2008 9:41pm

Mythbusters FTW! I was totally going to suggest this myth to them after enduring the miles of discussion on the original post here on BoingBoing. I never got around to registering for the Discovery forums to do so, but I am super stoked that they read my mind through osmosis, now my Wednesday night plans are set! I always thought they would have to resort to a RC airplane, I can't wait to see them try it with a full size plane!

Storming Omaha Beach (on a shoestring, with three actors)

January 24, 2008 11:40am

This is incredibly impressive. If I ever travel to Europe I will definitely be stopping by Normany to pay my respects.

Though, I have to beg to differ when saying this productions is "as impressive as anything in Saving Private Ryan." These 3 guys are good, they themselves probably should be working for a big movie studio, but I have yet to see any battlefield as accurately reproduced on film as that in Saving Private Ryan.

Speaking of accuracy, the Germans used the American M1 Grand rifles at Normandy (1:40 in video)? Teeheehee. Sorry, I'm a WWII nerd, I'll shut up now.

Lab setup creates out of body experiences

January 23, 2008 11:56am

"the scientists used two plastic rods to stroke synchronously"

In the photo the "plastic rods" look surprisingly like your run-o-the-mill Magic Markers. I love how science makes everyday objects sound... scientific.

Also, I think we can all agree that Synchronously Stroking Plastic Rods would be a good name for a rock band.

Retro-gamer cupcakes OM NOM NOM NOM

January 22, 2008 9:02am

I can say without hesitation that those are the most beautiful food items mine eyes have ever gazed upon. They are a splendid, perfectly symmetrical, tightly organized phalanx of sweet cupcakery ready to march on my tastebuds, to which I unconditionally surrender. ...for tonight, we dine in heaven!

Web Zen: desktop zen

January 18, 2008 2:56pm

@hemidemisemiquaver
I'm glad I wasn't the only one confused and disoriented. I kept looking around "Where's the 1280x1024 download?" I wish a lot of those were real desktop backgrounds, some of them are astounding!

SimCity goes free software

January 14, 2008 9:53am

I'd love for other classic PC games to go open source. Such as MechWarrior 2 or the Papyrus Nascar Racing games. These games are all out-of-print, the only copies floating around are from resellers or collectors who are making big bucks on rare copies. What have the publishers got to lose?

Mickey burgers

January 7, 2008 8:40am

Aww! I saw these at the local grocery store last month and was going to submit it for Cory's viewing pleasure. I guess Raphael beat me to the punch!

At least now we all know what to expect at all future BoingBoing cookouts!

High-altitude paper airplane flight

January 2, 2008 11:24am

If I lived in a high rise this is ALL I would do at every pause of free time throughout the day!

Gosh, this reminds me, I have at least 100 "White Wings" paper airplanes collecting dust in my basement that I built as a kid.

http://www.whitewings.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_plane#White_Wings

These were awesome paper airplanes (I've got the original all-paper ones, not the pre-cut balsa ones) that resembled actual gliders and airplanes of history. They could be fine tuned stay aloft in updrafts and thermal pockets.

Does anybody live in a hi-rise that I could stop by and have a paper airplane launching party?!

Top P2P downloads 2007: music, movies, TV and musicians

December 28, 2007 12:35pm

I think we can all agree that what the "Top P2P Songs of 2007" list tells us is that people don't want to pay for crappy music.

Funny instructions on toy spy pens

December 28, 2007 8:24am

"blow up the listening sounds from other persons."

Awesome! Now childrens everywhere will be able to play spy games reenacting movie scenes from True Lies: "You need an invitation? Here's my invitation!" BOOSH!

Colormation Screen Test

December 27, 2007 2:24pm

Am I alone in that I would love to see the film without the "Colormation" filter applied? It looks like the actors would have to wear gobs of makeup and painted clothing to get the stark contrast in the result. For instance, the Appropriations Committee guy's suit had some very thick wrinkles that I'm sure had to be painted on the actual suit. Also, the two distinct cheekbone lines on the astronaut's face... and the woman pilot's hair would've been interesting!

Benazir Bhutto assassinated

December 27, 2007 11:37am

@CERONOMUS: I am in the same boat. The assassination and murder of any human being is a tragedy.

After reading up today on Bhutto's history, I am still unclear as to what her true purpose was, especially amid all the corruption charges and frequent changes in policy. On the other side of the coin, I can't decide on Musharraf either; one minute he's on the Daily Show promoting his new book, the next he's declaring martial law on his country. I'm not, in any respect, informed enough to develop any sort of opinion, nor would I think it my place to do so.

At the risk of sounding portentous, all I know is that when I turned on the TV this morning and heard this as the first news of the day, I felt a rather unusual thump in my chest as if to say "This is going to effect me somehow."

Unlocked! Neuros's open logo for non-DRMed media and devices

December 19, 2007 1:04pm

I am going to throw my hat in with all the other graphic design snobs (myself included) in saying that the concept rocks, but this is only a first-draft at best. The visual style is slightly boring; it needs to work better as a self-contained badge or sticker easily attached to products or websites; the U vs. J issue is worth looking into; and, my nitpick, the kerning and letter widths are terrible.

I've got a feeling that we are going to start seeing a lot of redesigns around the web, and I hope the industy[ies] can agree on using a nice final design because this would be a great tool in getting the open standards/non-DRM issue in the public eye.

Photo of crocodile with severed arm

December 17, 2007 12:52pm

Great Googly-Moogly, I need about 100 unicorns to pull me out of the deep depression that was caused by looking though the whole Best AFP Photos 2007 gallery.

Mothers cradling their bloodied dead sons, people being hanged, people waving goodbye as they are about to be hanged, people drowning in mudslides and our fantastic Human Arm Meat in a Crocs Mouth photo we have here. Would somebody come and lock me up in a padded room? I cants stands it anymore!

Russian fighter jet can stop in mid-flight

December 5, 2007 12:03pm

This and the F-22 are impressive machines indeed, but its worth noting that they are mostly obsolete in regards to current warfare. I suppose obsolete is an incorrect term, is there a word for being too-advanced? Post-obsolete?

My point is, all the Vectored Thrusts, Canards and Kulbit Maneuvers in the world will do bupkis against a single 17 year old with an AK-47 planting IEDs on the side of the road. Urban warfare has no place for fighter jets. Perhaps in the occasional ground support mission... in which case one would be serving as less a fighter jet then a bomber.

I find it hard to believe we will ever see another traditional style Dog Fight ever again in modern combat. Even if the US, Russia and/or China ever have fisticuffs, I wouldn't worry about who has the faster jets, I'd be more concerned with who has the better fallout shelters.

Truffle sells for $373,000

Driver tasered for refusing to sign traffic ticket

November 27, 2007 1:58pm

Are we all going to need to start carrying our own tasers in order to defend ourselves against trigger-happy taser toting police officers?

How to stop restaurant tip fraud

November 15, 2007 9:52am

This happened to me once before, I left a $5.00 cash tip, but when my credit statement came the charge was $5.00 more then it should be. It could've been a quick mistake by the waiter and not completely evil, but I got the $5 credited back by my credit card company. This is why I track my every credit card purchase with MS Money as if they were deductions from a checking account, and keep all my receipts until the statement balances.

@UMBRIEL: Writing "CASH" in the tip line is a good idea, I typically just put a line through the field, I'll have to start doing that.

Harper's Weekly excerpt

October 23, 2007 10:45am

Oh, Lordy, that last thing about the crabs is insane. It does get me thinking about (other than Brazilian waxes) how we somewhat, for lack of a better term, 'discriminate' against which species are worthy of saving from extinction. Sure, save the cute pandas and gorillas, but what about the polio virus? Or bed-bugs? Who's sticking up for these guys?

Massive collection of pencils

October 22, 2007 10:07am

This reminds me of a project I did for a Net.Art class in college. I organized and categorized all of the pens in my possession and included a small biography associated with each pen. As you go through the site, you start to see connections and can draw conclusions about my own persona through my pens. Here is the link if you are interested (and I do not blame you if you aren't): http://kurtmac.com/pens/index.html

Tasered and shot with a beanbag gun for videotaping warrantless police search

October 16, 2007 2:48pm

Police are way too quick on the trigger with these tasers lately. While in many cases the majority of the debate is on whether or not the 'suspect' was doing anything unlawful in the first place, I think the major issue is the thoughtless use of these tasers by cops. From what I remember, tasers are not classified as a non-lethal weapon, but as a LESS-lethal weapon. Same goes for rubber bullets and beanbag shotguns. I thought police were suppose to be trained to use these only in a situation where they would also feel it appropriate to use a real gun.

Radiohead lets fans pick price for new album

October 1, 2007 4:15pm

I surely hope they release a standalone CD eventually, cuz I have no use for vinyl records, and I'd much rather prefer the uncompressed CD audio over the MP3s. I'll give 'em $5 for the MP3s now, then buy the CD later.

Also, if I choose to pay money for the MP3s, am I doing so in British Pounds? Should I probably expect to get charged a currency exchange fee from my credit card? Eh? Boo complications.

Scary plank against Huashan mountain cliff

Carnival race with pot belly pigs (video)

September 21, 2007 11:32am

I saw this exact guy at the DuPage County Fair in Illinois a few years ago. What I remember was that he is extremely passionate about his pig racing. He also claimed multiple times to have been featured on Jay Leno and/or David Letterman's show, which I can neither confirm nor deny.
