Instead of linking to a Guardian article about a Vanity Fair article, why not just link to the Vanity Fair article directly?

Con-artist convinces town he's a super Fed who doesn't need search warrants

June 30, 2008 6:45pm

I've been saying since the start that these no-warrant gag-ordered laws are perfect for foreign agents (aka spies). Show up somewhere with a couple guys in black suits, show some fake badges, and tell whoever that it is a War on Terror investigation and that they are not allowed to tell anyone about it. Then gather the spy data you want, and leave.

Where does petroleum oil come from?

June 25, 2008 1:17pm

DANWHITS, try here: http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/sources/non-renewable/oil.html#Howused
Did you know a 42 gallon produces 44 gallons of oil products? (That's because some of the products are lower density than crude oil.)

Oregon folds: Legislative Counsel's Committee says Oregon's laws aren't copyrighted

June 20, 2008 6:17am

I agree with Kibble, which is why I think we really need to take the offensive position, and have the EFF or whomever start passing along *our* proposed legislation to our representatives.

"See with your skin" by sitting in Mind Chair

The current research is working with the tongue, rather than the back. See Brainport and over here at Wired

Who'd like a portable text game console?

May 27, 2008 1:50pm

As mentioned above, Palm devices (including the PalmOS based Treo phones) have a few z-code interpreters available for playing Infocom games.

There were some rogue-likes on palmOS as well, as I recall...

Little Brother at NYC's Books of Wonder, May 26, 5-7PM -- CORRECTED!

May 20, 2008 6:19am

Good grief, 39 comments and no one pointed out the error: The entry heading says May 25, the main text says May 26 -- which is Monday. Cory or someone at bb needs to edit this entry and fix the dates so they all match, and so they reflect whatever Cory's actual schedule is.

US wastes "27% of food available for consumption"

May 18, 2008 11:21am

This isn't anything new. 60 years ago, my grandfather used to have a pig farm in Secaucus, NJ. He and his brothers would run garbage trucks into NYC and collect restaurant garbage to feed to the pigs. Years later in the 1980s, he would "dumpster dive" at the local supermarket for extra edibles; he didn't need to (he was worth close to $1 million), but he had lived through the Great Depression and couldn't pass up the opportunity to get perfectly good food for free.

CBS to buy CNET for $1.75bn

May 15, 2008 8:20pm

#3: what CNET has to offer is the domain name "news.com". I bet you that that within days of the deal being finalized, news.com will be the new home of what is now cbsnews.com, and you'll see an advertising blitz to go along with it.

Granted, it's a lot to overpay for a domain name, but I am sure it was a big part of their thinking.

US Artistic License ID cards

April 21, 2008 5:32pm

I wonder what would happen if you showed one of these to one of those security guards that try to stop people from taking photographs in public places...

Verizon quotes $420 in setup fees for business DSL, and that doesn't include the actual DSL

April 21, 2008 1:40pm

I suggest trying Evdo via a rental for a week or so, to try it out. If it doesn't work well enough for you, pony up the money for DSL -- but if it does, you can switch over to your own Evdo contract.

The arms race escalates between spammers and CAPTCHA

April 15, 2008 9:14am

#1 - that's no good. 6 choose 3 means that random picking gives a 1 in 20 chance (5%) of getting it right. Throw a botnet at that, and it's not so bad. And if you have *any* cat-recognition technology, you can do better than pure chance.

10 choose 5 might work, as that cuts it down random picking to 1/252.

Of course, going down this path of human distinguishing challenges means that spammers will be the first to develop Turing-test passing AIs.

Bush administration: Fourth Amendment doesn't apply to domestic military operations

April 2, 2008 2:07pm

#59 -- Stop it, how? Protests are dismissed or ignored. I call and write my congressmen. I vote when given the chance. None of it seems to make a difference, not that I've stopped trying.

Superman's creator's heirs awarded copyright in Action Comics #1

March 28, 2008 4:04pm

Great, awarded a copyright on something that should have expired in 1994 at the latest.

Back in 1938, when Action Comics #1 was created, copyright was supposed to last for 28 years, with a renewal for a second 28 year period possible if you asked for it when the first period was running out.

Nine Inch Nails goes Creative Commons remix-friendly with new album

March 3, 2008 11:57am

I have no problem with charging NiN charging $5 for a convenient download, even if the content is freely distributable, just as I have no problem with folks selling Linux distributions. I'm sure other people will redistribute ii-iv, since they are CC licensed.

Nine Inch Nails goes Creative Commons remix-friendly with new album

March 3, 2008 8:56am

Just saying "CC-licensed" doesn't necessarily mean that you can listen to it for free.

Actually, I think it does. Yes, there are several CC licenses. But all of them allow for non-commercial free redistribution. Hence the "commons" part of Creative Commons.

Smoking ban workaround in bars: Hold "theater nights"

February 25, 2008 2:00pm

Antinous (#6), by my understanding of Actor's Equity, as a non-equity theater, non-equity actors smoking and drinking at such a bar would have no problem -- but Equity members could not go to such a "theater night"!

Re-lensing glasses by mail

I'll also say that the two pairs I bought from Zenni Optical have been just fine.

Girl with extra kidneys wants to donate

February 18, 2008 5:02pm

There were a pair of Bosnian brothers found to have 4 kidneys each a few years ago. http://www.shortnews.com/start.cfm?id=37296

HOWTO make a camera stabilizer out of string, a screw and a washer

February 1, 2008 7:45am

Shouldn't that be a bolt, not a screw? Common usage uses "screw" for tapered threaded fasteners, which could damage the tripod mount threads.

Call your Senator NOW and support Sen Dodd's fight to save the Constitution

January 24, 2008 6:24am

Correction, Bob Menendez is 202.224.4744. (You have Kerry's number listed for him.)

Baker's Edge Brownie Pan Reviewed (Verdict: Not Worth It)

December 20, 2007 9:12am

Who likes edges? Me, for one. I'm all about the slightly crunchy, chewy edge pieces.

Sad to hear this didn't work out.

Daily Show writer explains writers' strike -- if digital content isn't worth anything, how come Viacom is suing YouTube for $1 billion?

November 15, 2007 11:48am

Bentcorner, that probably because Hollywood cooks the books so that practically nothing ever makes a net profit, according to them. The wikipedia entry on Hollywood Accounting is a good start. I'd be asking for a percentage of the gross, too.

Wingsuit flight video

The heck with wingsuits, check out Jet-Man.

Eye-Fi: Add Wi-Fi to Any Camera (with SD)

October 31, 2007 8:35am

Zandr, why wait? According to this guy, you can use a Tekkeon MyPower battery to power your Cradlepoint. I'm thinking the combo would be good for people documenting a protest or other event where someone is likely to try and take (or force you to erase) your camera, or for a news reporter.

Indiana Jones LEGO Boxes Leaked

September 15, 2007 11:57am

Also, Traveller's Tales, who made the Lego Star Wars video games have a Lego Indiana Jones game scheduled for 2008, which will let you play through the first 3 movies. See http://www.lucasarts.com/games/legoindianajones/

What the Fuck is Steampunk?

September 12, 2007 10:50am

I believe that just as "Cyberpunk" encompasses a world-concept that includes things that are not cybernetic, and "space-age" includes items not ever used in space, "Steampunk" includes non-steam powered items.

However, if you feel you need an alternate term, "Neo-Victorian" is a partially overlapping concept.
