Gun owners are the happiest people in the US

Wow another boingboing gun "discussion"! Look at all the pretty nonsense...

The truck that parks in front of the bait store on main heading towards carrboro plaza is excellent. But taco truck shutdowns aren't limited to LA. Wasn't the carrboro town council trying to shut them down about a month or two ago? something tells me that the local restaurants are probably behind it.

Last time I saw gloria molina (circa 1990) she was pushin' about 3 bills. I was in city hall one day and someone asked where the rotunda was and I pointed to her office. Perhaps this is just gloria's desperate cry for help.

The collected controversies of William F. Buckley

March 6, 2008 9:52am

Hmmm Nazi, vs queer...?
I'd say that in the context of the argument, Buckley was being restrained. Also, Ummm... wasn't buckley's statement factually correct? I know he meant it as an insult, but isn't gore vidal gay? As far as facts go, however much you hate him, WFB was not a nazi. (My recollection is that they were socialists, perhaps you see it otherwise)

I'm a bit too much of a libertarian to be much of a buckley fan, (drug policy excluded) but I always read his stuff, which was usually well argued, if not frequently wrong. Some of this crowd could take a lesson.

As far as buckley claiming that perhaps people who were illiterate should not be allowed to vote. (which was his actual argument, not that they were black)
I work at a university in chapel Hill. I've heard this same thing said nearly every day from the left, regarding "rednecks", "trailer trash", "republican" or whatever other alias for non-university indoctricated, they can come up with. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard that not only should republicans not be allowed to vote, but they should have to have a license to breed. This because your average redneck doesn't have her intellect shaped by having her parents support them until she is through her graduate degree in anarchofeminism at 30 years old. Talk about spoiled brats.

So the guy wrote, and lived his life largely in the public eye for about 60 years, wrote millions of words on more things than you will be aware of in your life and because he came out on the wrong end of history on SOME of them, your summation of this massive intellect is that he was a closeted homosexual because he talked funny.

Be glad there isn't a poll test for tolerance.

Also that is just plain stupid.

"Why is Moonbat the only one here arguing the Objectivist side?"

Because from my review of this thread, with very few exceptions, there is no actual argument coming from either side, just a bunch of name calling and button pushing - starting with the very first post "psychopathy" and continuing through to "fucking stooge" (#120) and beyond.

It IS fun to watch, though. (In a hyena pack discovery channel sort of way.)

Also some of us have jobs.

No, actually YOU say it.

Two broken legs and crutches out of reach ~Suffering.

objectivist = others, as taken from context of your other postings ("psychopathy" really?)

Seemingly, everything you write on every topic ~ collectivism. (You DO realize I can click on your name and see your other posts, right? /sarcasm)

The math is left as an exercise for the reader.

Apparently it takes a collectivist to find joy in the suffering of those who aren't a member of their clique. Isn't that collectivism's real raison d'etre?

Objectivism in Bioshock

February 16, 2008 10:19pm

I probably have a good deal of objectivism in my personal philosophy. Although I never downed a full dose of the randroid kool-aid, I've been to enough libertarian party meetings and objectivist functions to be able to claim to have known several hundred objectivists. Frankly, with a few exceptions, I've not come across any of the people described in the rantings of takuan and others of the collectivist ilk here (Really? #17. George bush is an objectivist? is everyone you hate, now an objectivist?) Most of the self-described objectivists that I know are extremely nice happy trustworthy people (and yes, maybe a little dull when discussing objectivism).

Everybody is an egomaniacal jerk at 14 when they first read rand - it has little to do with objectivism and everything to do with being 14. In my personal experience, at least with those who are adults, objectivists tend to have a pretty good sense of who they are based on their knowledge of the importance of their own self esteem, its basis in rationality, its constant need for tending, and if need be - a little pruning now and then.

In general I find objectivists much more trustworthy than collectivists. Trust is important to me. In my experience, collectivists tend to be able to adjust their concept of reality on a whim, usually to avoid responsibility. If an objectivist screws something up, then an objectivist philosophy doesn't allow them to foist the blame onto someone else, dilute the blame by claim to group responsibility, shovel blame under a rug by claiming membership in an aggrieved group, or negate responsibility entirely by a claim to forgiveness from some uninvolved omnipotent holy 3rd party.

Objectivism isn't an asshole vaccine; I mean look at ayn rand herself - what a witch. But in my experience it certainly seems to breed better people or at least ones that I can trust to show up for work and to do what they say they will do. sorry if the concept of better people offends you. (Ok, not really sorry - this is me being a "dick" #80)

So far, the argument that collectivists throw better parties is the only reality I've recognized from your side of the aisle all day.

Worst food in America: Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing

February 11, 2008 1:51pm

This is just lazy journalism.

Since nobody, except maybe pre-subway Jared, eats a whole order, let alone every day, I don't see what makes it the "worst food in america". Unless you are one of the neopuritan body worshippers who go around looking for EVIL in foods that don't have whatever sacred dietary proscriptions you are following this week.

One is expected to share an appetizer.

For an entree, the large nacho cheese covered chicken fried steak at the jailhouse cafe in san antonio texas is far worse than this (and by "worse", of course, I mean better). And it came with a side of fries. Between the sodium, the fat and the carbs, you are lucky to come out alive. I could handle it once, maybe twice a year tops - then only after playing 5 sets of tennis. I hope they are still open - I'm checking southwest for airfare ASAP.

Bill to ban restaurants serving obese people

February 7, 2008 6:44am

BRAVO! Nik. You are 100% correct. I'd like to add one other point about the great Fat ban during the 70's. It wasn't JUST science that was supporting it, it was a few scientists supported by a cadre of attorneys and their incestuous bretheren - politicians, who turned a few poorly designed papers into public policy. Thus set in stone, this made funding to support anything other than the anti-fat, Pro-carbohydrate (ie Corn Sugar) party line nearly impossible to get through an NIH grant committee. I've been in science 20 years and have watched seemingly endless cycles of BS, just like this being perpetrated on the public by grandstanding egomaniacs

NE2d: you completely missed the point, and apparently the paper I referenced. PLOS stands for public library of science. The peer reviewed scientific papers are free to read. van Baal et al
PLOS Medicine 2008 right on the front page. There are lots of arguments against obesity, but evil fat people picking your pocket by being sick is not one of them.

Bill to ban restaurants serving obese people

February 5, 2008 2:06pm

@#11 This is not about bankruptcy. Apparently neither you nor this particular Mississippi rep, have PLOS medicine in your RSS feed.

See the recent paper by van Baal et al. which merely confirms any of a number of studies on this subject.
Obesity and smoking are both net cost savings for the health care system. Skinny people live longer and by doing so suck up more resources.

This is simply about which form of bigotry you find acceptable.
