March 18, 2008 11:51am

Real survival depends on your actions in the first few hours.

Most people are lost for less then 24 hours.

You'll need:

1. Shelter-- Tarp or Poncho- If you're wet you're dead.
2. Signal-- Quality outdoor whistle (you can't call for help for long/voice does not carry far).
3. Compass-- Know where you've been, where you are going.
4.Energy-- Nut-filled trail mix.
5.Glow sticks-- If it's dry you don't need a fire if it's wet you'll never start one.
6. Knife-- Better to have one and not need it....

Never go into the wilderness without these items.

French people eat until they're full, Americans eat until the food's gone

February 23, 2008 8:15am

There is no real mystery to the different diets.

Having traveled extensively in France the main difference in food consumption that I have noticed is that the opportunity to buy high-fat, high calorie snack items are relativly rare there.

Everyone talks about pate and brie but in reality these items are more likely eaten at dinner not as a between meal snack.

Availability of unhealthy food options on EVERY corner in America is the main culprit in the fattening of America.
Anytime one is peckish in the USA there is always an 800 calorie, $2.00 menu item available that can be SUPER-SIZED for a nominal charge..

Kids book about hallucinogens

January 29, 2008 9:50am

In the early 70's we were bombarded with anti-drug information at my Pennsylvania high school.
Few of us had a clue what the drug culture was about, much less knowing slang terms, drug effects, tell tale signs, common stash places (for parents to check), etc.
By the end of this education most of us were intrigued by the bizarre explanations and promises of other-worldly experiences.
Long segments of educational films were given over to attempts to replicate the mind altering state of a LSD TRIP, resulting in classrooms that looked more like a Grateful Dead light show than a cautionary tale of deadly misadventure.
By the time we got to college we were well versed in dodges, pill identification and various junky idioms.
The end result being that our drug classes worked more as a primer rather than a deterrent.
Just as in poker, sometimes giving too much information can tip you hand.

Southern racists adopt "Canadian" as a euphemism for "black"

RE: HATE

#127 "I hate non-tippers. I hate Black non-tippers and White non-tippers. And I hate them equally. And since we've had this discussion I've realized that I even hate Jewish and Asian non-tippers just as much."

So much HATE, there certainly seems to be more than enough to go around.

Some Language creates more heat than light.
Light exposes hatred, heat just gives it a warm place to dwell.

Reviewing the VAST majority of these posts I see a rather civil discussion of language, intention and a bit of recent history.
With that in mind, I'm a little surprised that some posts are censored for specifying the very words we want to discuss.
Once again few seem abusive in this string of comments.

With all respect to our overworked moderator..why the censor?

500 Euro notes not welcome here

January 28, 2008 11:59am

" countries where people use bar money / cash the most are Germany, Switzerland and Japan.
It has something to do with status."

Once again it's a matter of security...
Germany, Japan and Switzerland have a VERY LOW incidence of street crime subsequently, carrying large amounts of cash is less risky.

In the USA you can always spot a rube when you see someone flashing large amounts of money.

500 Euro notes not welcome here

January 28, 2008 11:51am

Today in my ongoing series of comments on Cory's photos;)

This sort of thing isn't much of a problem in the USA because no one ever carries cash.

I believe the 'Security' issue here may simply be the reluctance to have so much cash in the till which would be required to break large bills.
It's common for retail establishments to limit the denominations of currency which they can accept.

Robbery is a security risk in my book.

#30 "Vancouver is more open, but still, more provincial and monocultural than any US city."

Wow, that's one BIG misconception about Vancouver BC.
I visit Vancouver several times a year. I consider it one of the most welcoming in all my travels.

A racially mixed, open city with a constant stream of world travelers and multi-cultural influences.

The (IMHO) most beautiful city from San Diego to Alaska, it boasts the largest Chinatown in the west and an arts/film scene to rival cites 3 times it's size. And they can swear on TV just like in real life!!
The only prejudice I found was their boast that

Southern racists adopt "Canadian" as a euphemism for "black"

January 27, 2008 4:17pm

Regarding Race Relations in the South:

I once read an observation that ONE (and there are many) of the differences between the Northern
and Southern approach to race is that the North tends to reject the Individual while embracing the Race.
The South conversely seems to have prejudice towards the other Race while embracing the Individuals.
It's a generalization to be sure but one with more than a grain of truth.
Blacks and Whites have always lived closely in the South, most southerners have an aquantince of another race whom they like, while at the same time generalizing about the 'others'.
The North has always been more segregated and less mixed in ordinary commerce and interaction. They accept the race but interact with few individuals of another group. Leading to less real experience with the other group.
Fewer Northerners subsequently have friends of a different race.

I think we a need to be cautious when making these generalizations but I believe they still offer food for comment.

I guess I'm just saying that one shouldn't assume the South has a less open society because of some who have lingering, isolated, racist attitudes towards 'Canadians'.
It just seems that these notions, are more exposed, and carry more gravity due to their past.

"Why can't we all just get along little doggy?"

#10 - now THAT is funny!

Southern racists adopt "Canadian" as a euphemism for "black"

January 27, 2008 1:13am

This simply proves that offense is all about intent.
Regardless of how inoffensive a term may seem if others find the term offensive then it is simply good form to follow suit and refrain from using that particular term in the offensive context.
I respect dogs, but being called one raises my dander...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Example: When it's chilly I no longer say there is a 'nip in the air' and subsequently I no longer see that look of disapproval flit across the face of my Japanese wife.
Noting wrong with the word 'Canadian' in and of itself but when applied as a coded epithet, as in this instance, it manages to convey all the ignorance and hate associated with the term it purports to replace.
Sadly, it associates itself with a country known for it's tolerance and all around friendliness which, in point of fact, merely helps to illustrate the idiocy of those who use it as a pejorative.
Lets nip this one in the bud, damnit, next time you see something innovative, smart or progressive you can just say, "Oh, how Canadian!"

Arrest and public humiliation for a small mix-up at a fast food outlet?
Is your brown shirt too tight?

I am sorry but no one deserves to be arrested for such a minor situation.

Thinking that every minor mix-up is deserving of arrest is the sort of approach that has America in a quasi-police state today.

Compassion, understanding and yes, the occasional admission that some situations just aren't worth the bad publicity would go further than the "Arrest them if they talk back or ask too many questions," policy we have today.

Seems like the TSA only becomes conscious of nefarious methods of concealment only AFTER someone attempts it (ie shoes, liquids, knives etc).

I don't mean to think FOR the terrorists but plastic knives and sharpened wood isn't exactly high tech or James Bond and NONE of these items can be detected in security checks.
And that is the point, TSA would have us believe we are facing a vast, wide-spread, well-armed anti-USA terrorist army. It's nothing of the sort. Just random nuts with hyper crazy ideals.
They have us all living and acting like Afghani women before the invasion. Afraid to ask a question or stand up to misguided force.
We have become them.
Pogo was right, "We has met the enemy and he is us!"

Crazy SeaTac airport, usually confusing, always silly.
This is the B-tier US airport that is fourth in pilferage of passenger luggage after such busy international locations as NYC, LA and Miami. Go figure! Fun town, eh?
This is also the airport that removed ALL holiday decorations when a Rabbi simply asked why there was no menorah present.
Gouge-town Seattle as we locals call it.
Pay more, get less.
A beautiful city mismanaged beyond words.
So busy thinking about the future they can’t fill last weeks potholes.
Both Seattle and SeaTac airport’s problems are a perfect example of the foolishness of believing all the hype you read about terror or your own once attractive city.
Seattle; like having a pretty girlfriend who’s always sick.
