Free marrow-donor kit and registration

May 5, 2008 7:10am

It's important to donate, if you can. Even donating blood for a stem cell transplant or for standard blood and platelet transfusions is encouraged. At this very moment I am sitting in the transfusion area of thge Blood and Marrow Transplant Group, Northside Hospital in Atlanta; I am prepping for a stem cell transplant, which takes place Friday. For the record I am very grateful to have found a donor, as this should very well save my life.

Donate today and save a life. :-)

Well as a designer I build all my frontends with Dreamweaver (CSS positioning) then do cleanups by hand later. From my standpoint that's faster, but the developers I've worked with usually do everything there out by hand.

Funny article . . .

Racist signs in Thailand

April 9, 2008 7:17am

"Glad to see people can be racist against their own race."

This really isn't a case of racism, as the statement above sort of points out along with my initial post regarding it's definition. Anthropologically speaking, Asia is primarily made up of people of "mongolian" descent, so this is more ethnic insensitivity and bigotry. A case in point: people often use the term racism when describing attrocities against Jews and/or Arabs; neither are a race by definition, as anthropologically (again) they are both descendents of causasoids.

Racism was at one time alive and well and the root of slavery starting in the early 1700s, mainly in the Americas (implimented by the then commerce focused Dutch). Eventually it became more focused in the American South, where slavery was exploited to benefit the agrarian economy, but racism still existed up north in spite of the North's efforts and successes in abolition. The primarily caucasoidal people back then would and tended to see people of African descent to be inferior and often used the Old Testament to justify their actions:

Leviticus 25:44-46: "Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly."

So anyhoo, sorry to come across as long winded, but I tought there might need to be some clarification.

Is this racism or is it ethnic bigotry? Either way it's a shame.

racĀ·ism
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

Great to scifi reviews, and this one certainly sounds interesting. Cory, perhaps you could sometime compile and post a list of your favorite scifi works.
