Video of creepy eyelid-poking beauty tip

April 1, 2008 9:12am

@2: Odd that you decide American-born Asian women marry Caucasian men because of some kind of psychological flaw, but don't consider that a marriage clearly demands the consent of both parties -- are Caucasian men, conversely, full of cultural and racial self-loathing so they shun Caucasian women and marry Asian women? Ah, but who would hate being Caucasian -- it's the best thing that could happen to a person!

A more logical way of reasoning would be to say that American-born women, Asian or not, tend to marry people who share their cultural interests and social values -- most probably, American-born men ... who tend to be Caucasian because that's the dominant ethnic group in the United States.

Take your rubbish conceit elsewhere.

@16: Ah, yeah. I think you don't hate craft. I think you hate poorly conceived and poorly executed craft, of which this sock is not an example.

I've met a lot of people with no talent in art try to do art, and then cover up by saying, "It's (just) art." I'm still pretty open about art though.

(Ok, I hate most postmodernist stuff.)

Food Court Musical, by Improv Everywhere

March 11, 2008 3:01pm

Oh, oh! I also noticed that this was rather rehearsed -- though this is openly acknowledged and documented on IE's site -- and that this blatantly contradicts the name of Improv Everywhere, as "improv" stands for "improvisation", which is entirely the opposite of such rehearsed shenanigans! Also, they performed their act in a SINGLE place, rather than, as they so falsely claim, "everywhere"!

Ah, don't you feel so much more clever now? A good day.

Why JK Rowling will lose her suit against The Harry Potter Lexicon

January 14, 2008 11:25am

Even if Rowling decides to put out her own encyclopedia (which I hear she does), why on earth should it be viewed as a clash of interests? The HP Lexicon will always be unauthorized and therefore always at a disadvantage to any official releases by Rowling; even if somehow both the Lexicon and Rowling products are identical, the stamp of official approval will give Rowling's version the edge. It's difficult to believe any diehard fan of Rowling's -- most of which own multiple copies of each of her books -- would be satisfied owning just a fan-produced encyclopedia.

If you dislike the idea of big-city bully Toronto for whatever personal reasons, gnash your teeth in private all you want. But the lack of city cash affects real people, as Canadian and as deserving of a high standard of life as any other citizen in this country.

Differences between 1963 and 1991 editions of Richard Scarry kids' book

October 1, 2007 3:26pm

Alicke: Conversely, it might be an opportunity to explain to your kids that women can certainly make careers for themselves outside of the house now ... while it's also perfectly laudable for women to stay home and take care of their families -- be "home mommies", say -- if they choose to. It might be easy to confuse a child to say "It's demeaning to say women enjoy clothes!" while one day they see Mommy fussing over herself, without explaining the nuances of each situation.

Having values come pre-packaged can be handy, but it's easy to turn outdated books into learning experiences. Still, I can see where it can be too much for very young children.

Differences between 1963 and 1991 editions of Richard Scarry kids' book

October 1, 2007 3:18pm

Bizarre. Then again, it seems to be a trend to dumb down children's entertainment these days. Perhaps publishers think "promptly" is just too heavy for young children. Who wants to burden parents with interacting with their kids and teaching them vocabulary?

Cops complaining about cops writing cops tickets

September 25, 2007 11:18am

This comment comes from the forum: "Anyone can graduate an academy and call themselves a police officer. Not everyone can become a COP." But you can if you flout law and professional ethics, and place some misguided notion of "brotherhood" above public justice!

One commentator mentions that traffic ticket writing is the pettiest of an officer's duties. The point isn't whether a duty is prestigious. The point is that traffic laws exist to deter careless driving, which can have *fatal* consequences. It's not a small infraction.

But hey, try convincing officers who have better things to do, like bust people for smoking weed.
