First Microsoft ad with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld

September 5, 2008 10:49am

Epic fail.

How is this an advertisement? I mean, yes it's nice being entertained instead of advertised to, but why would any company spend their advertising budget to... y'know... NOT advertise? I'm no lover of "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC", but this was just crazy.

There are plenty of things that Apple does which bug the hell out of me. But I don't use Mac OS X because it's HIP, I use it because I think its the best operating system out there. Take note, Mr. Gates.

Horse Whisperer author poisoned by wild mushrooms

September 2, 2008 2:05pm

@ 3 & 4

But "really really really know what you're doing is still relative"! The problem is that there are deadly mushrooms that are nearly identical to the tasty, benign ones.

Last year, a close friend of mine was accidentally poisoned by mushrooms her grandfather had picked. He had been picking wild for many, many years and had never encountered a problem. Luckily, my friend survived with some mild delirium and severe stomach pains.

Nobody REALLY knows what they're doing unless they have a degree in fungal botany or the like.

Miniature cattle - family pets that provide milk

August 18, 2008 11:56am

Great idea for household milk, but... I dunno.

Personally I have no problem with eating meat, but somehow I think that if you're going to represent yourself as an animal's friend, you probably shouldn't eat them later. And ethical concerns aside, that would just feel weird for me.

Looks more like a starling to me, though.

Multi-room Apple audio system shows why Sonos must release its iPhone remote app

August 12, 2008 1:34pm

This is one of the rare occasions when I'll show some Apple fanboyism. I LOVE AirTunes. I have an Airport express and an AppleTV (with the 2.0 software). It is amazing to walk through the house: computer room, kitchen, living room, and hear the same music throughout. The sync is perfect.

Any hands-on experience with the Airport Extreme?

August 6, 2008 11:57am

I've had an Airport Extreme for several months now and it has been working like a dream. Wireless-N all the way.

I previously an SMC router which worked well enough for several years. But ever since I upgraded my security key to WPA, it was always glitchy and dropping connections.

Take the plunge.

On the absurdity of "maximizing shareholder value"

July 26, 2008 8:51am

Yes, it is a silly article. When executive say that they have a duty to maximize value for their shareholders, you need to note two things:

First, most companies DON'T pay dividends anymore. The value of a company comes from the weird perceived value that is represented by its stock price. Now yes, a company can increase its quarterly profits by firing half its staff. But, smart analysts who read their SEC-filed reports might say: "WTF? You're busy and clearly need personnel. You're not going to be able to do all the work!" And then your share price might plummet as all the savvy investors dump their shares. But who knows? The market at large might perceive that your company is overstaffed for various reasons and your share price might increase. It's a mystery! Shareholder value is stock price and stock price is perceived value.

Second, yes, it's up the management to do their best to ensure that value. And yes, "ensuring value" is a concept whose execution is entirely undefined. But that's humanity. If there was a way to bake a "perfect meal" or write the "perfect song" or make a "perfect house", we would have one set of plans for each of those things and every house, song, and meal would be exactly the same. Management has to rely on their wits and what they THINK will happen in the marketplace.

I'm not going to disagree that big corporations do a lot of shitty stuff in the name of "ensuring shareholder value", but by the same token I feel its equally shitty when irresponsible corporate managers look after their own hides and insiders sacrificing innocent investors. In theory, that's why public companies have to report everything to the SEC (and as such, the public), so government reviewers and independent analysts can make sure companies don't screw over the average investor.

But then, that never happens in American, right?

Mr Jalopy's love-ode to Marantz quadrophonic sound

July 8, 2008 10:51am

#6: This makes me wonder how many quadraphonic albums have been rexmied into digital surround sound recordings. Seems like the perfect excuse for a quad-renaissance!

My dad still has one of these guys. I think he only hooked it up once so we could listen to a couple of quad Beatles albums. I can't say it was particularly remarkable. But I'm sure it was a marvel in the 60s. ;-)

Fiery and funny rhetoric in Canadian Parliament over the Canadian DMCA

June 30, 2008 9:51am

Hmm... where's the response from a government MP? It's great that Bill Siskay (my neighbouring riding's MP) asked this very to-the-point question. But we should hear the government's response in the clip too, even if it's just more asinine rhetoric. Hearing both sides is democracy.

Psystar announces Mac server clones, still not sued

June 23, 2008 1:43pm

As pleased as I am that this hasn't gone to court yet, Apple's silence only scares me. They're clearly considering all their legal and technical options and I have no doubt that we will soon see a strategy designed to destroy the viability of the "unauthorized clones" business once and for all.

I'd love to have a Mac OS X server on the cheap, but I wouldn't dare recommend these clones to my bosses. One day, Apple will find a way to break the OS, and on that day my ass will be on the line.

People in love with objects

June 18, 2008 3:33pm

Perhaps I should clarify, you can't be "in love" with an object in the sense that without reciprocity, there is no "relationship" in the traditional human sense.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should send out the love police to enforce our preconceptions. However, this case makes for an interesting study of when we decide whether a person is psychologically fit or not.

"Is the person dangerous to me or anyone else? ... Not my business then."

Well, that's not really how we make the call. A self-cutter doesn't harm anyone else through their actions, it's their self-harm that makes them psychologically unfit. That's an extreme example of course. But it's not the extreme examples that are morally interesting, it's the ambiguous ones.

People in love with objects

June 18, 2008 12:53pm

“We see things as living beings,” (Winther) says. “That’s a must. Otherwise you can’t fall in love with an object.”

But they're NOT alive. So you CAN'T.

I dunno, I'm all for letting people do whatever they want in the bedroom, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. But where do we decide to draw the line between "different" and "crazy"? These people labour under the delusion that the object is capable of loving them back. If they weren't OS, they might form actual relationships with actual people.

It's dangerous business to start going around talking about "curing" people, but how much deviation from the norm are we willing to tolerate before we intervene for a person's well-being? It's an interesting discussion subject...
