May 1, 2008 4:00pm

"I am the Lizard King.
Ben Stein needs to develop a taste for flies - he needs to EVOLVE.
I just hope he likes his new shiny green skin."

'Evidence'- nope, no one you can convert here, please move along ... and take your faith with you.

Takuan, my mind boggles - don't you keep the lizard guts to make stuffing with???

I could say:
"WTF??"

"Genius!"

"This page intentionally left blank."
or I could say:
"I couldn't have said it better myself."

But I'm not going to say any of those things.

re: #464 Takeshi ....

"Not bad faith at all. As Sherlock Holmes would say, eliminate the impossible, and whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

Um, methinks you confuse the great English fictional detective with another Englishman:

from Wikipedia:

"Occam's razor (sometimes spelled Ockham's razor) is a principle attributed to the 14th-century English logician and Franciscan friar William of Ockham. The principle states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory. The principle is often expressed in Latin as the lex parsimoniae ("law of parsimony" or "law of succinctness"): "entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem", or "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity".

This is often paraphrased as "All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best." In other words, when multiple competing theories are equal in other respects, the principle recommends selecting the theory that introduces the fewest assumptions and postulates the fewest entities. It is in this sense that Occam's razor is usually understood."

Now - where is the troll feast? I posted to this thread waaaay back (upper 160's, methinks), just now catching up on all the cattiness ...

Boing Boing's Moderation Policy

March 27, 2008 3:52pm

re: 'Taking money from Microsoft is wrong' ....

Something like this happened a while back, I even got a screenshot of it .....

Cory (ever the freedom fighter) had posted something (I think it was about Sony seriously sucking again with all the DRM crapware) - and immediately to the left of Cory's post was a vertical banner ad selling (wait for it) do-it-yourself DRM software (targeted at software co.'s) !!!!
Seeing the obvious irony of the juxtaposition, I immediately dashed off a well-timed (and intentioned) manuscript via electronical means to Mr. Cory, and as it turned out, it was most probably BB's (evil, under-handed, yet profitable) partnership w/ Federated Media, who were selling / populating that adspace - and the Boinger's apparently didn't know WTF ... but Cory got on the batphone to FM immediately, said rather offensive ads must vaMOOSE, and they wuz gone, just like dat ....

Anyways - this is the BoingBoing playhouse - they set the rules (thru the lovely and wordful mod Ms. Teresa) - so, if ya don't like her (and their) moderator style, go start yer own blog, and then vent all ye wish into the great wormhole of them Internet tubes.

I, for one, am sure Ms. Mod's subtle 'control' greatly enhances my reading pleasure (having seen her at work here in the threads), and I also greatly enjoy reading the posts by all of the Boingers themselves - it expands my horizons to learn things about:
steampunk, women's rights overseas, scams in adoption processes, Sony fucking up yet again, etc., etc., etc.

Bravo, Boingers, I say again, Bravo!

the rest of ya'll (especially 'Kaiser' and 'SparkZilla') can kiss my big hairy *ss ... but I imagine you guys chose those usernames just to provoke thought, eh? LOL!)

Arthur C. Clarke dead at 90

March 18, 2008 3:38pm

One of my first books was 'Islands In The Sky', a juvenile sci-fi by Mr. Clarke .... he's the one that started me, and I also collected Mr. Heinlein and Dr. Asimov along the way .. but it was Clarke that opened up the whole world of speculative fiction to me, for which I am not only forever grateful, but it has also steered my life, and my family's lives, in perhaps different directions than we might have gone ...

Fare Thee Well in your travels, Sir Arthur, and know that you have touched the lives and minds of millions of people around our tiny little world.

Does Mighty Putty Work?

March 3, 2008 10:26am

We use something 'mighty similar' here where I work called 'Dura Bond Epoxy Putty' from a co. called 'Pro Chem'...
from the label:
'Dura Bond will PLUG and SEAL practically anything that leaks, it will PATCH holes and cracks, MEND almost anything that is broken. It is excellent for REBUILDING or FABRICATING PARTS and as an all-purpose adhesive for metals, wood, glass, masonry, ceramics, and many plastics. It can be drilled, tapped, filled, sanded, and painted like metal. Sets steel-hard in 20 minutes.'
It's even set up the same - an inner 'tube' of one material, surrounded by an outer 'tube' - rip off a chunk, mush it all together (but work fast!), and apply it to whatever ya got ...

So, yeah, if this 'Mighty Putty' is similar, it should work - this Dura Putty hardens like ceramic very quickly (and gets quite warm while doing so - epoxy-like chemical reactions going on, dontcha know) ....

Smell of pot smoke not grounds for arrest and search in Canada

February 13, 2008 12:29pm

1. If I'm walking down the street, and happen to 'smell like sex', I must be strip-searched and possibly arrested for 'public nudity', 'lewd and laviscious behavior', 'patronizing a prostitute', etc. I mean, I'm OBVIOUSLY guilty, eh? Even though I've just walked out of my own apartment building after makin' sum whoopie wit my girl ....

2. If I'm walking down the street, and happen to have 'too much cologne', will I be busted for 'inciting a riot'? (yeah, I'm rather hunky ... LOL!)

3. If I'm walking down the street, and happen to 'smell like chocolate', will I be busted for 'suspicion of robbing a bakery'?
Or will the lady cop mistake the smell of chocolate for cologne, and give me a 'lick down'?? ROFL!

Prohibition in the 20's .... Federal law prohibited the manufacture, sale, or possession of alcohol.
Many people ignored this law: speak-easys, moonshiners, rumrunners, etc. Those that were caught, went to jail (or fought it out w/ the 'revenooers').
As time passed, the lawmakers either: got thirsty, or realized that the law was not a good idea (because they were tired of getting bitched at by their constituents), and repealed it.

As a 'law', it may be good, or not good. Each of us makes the choice: to obey, or disobey (and take our chances).
Otherwise, lobby your politicians to CHANGE the laws, or perform 'civil disobedience'.

Me? I'm movin' to Amsterdam.

MPAA admits to lying about college downloading

January 23, 2008 9:51am

They LIED about misleading. They LIED when they call it 'entertainment'. They LIED when they said 'we're sorry'.
They LIED when they said 'CD's will last forever.' They LIED when they said Britney was the best thing since sliced bread. They LIED when they said there were no bigfoots (bigfeets?) on Mars.
They LIED when they said 'bigger, better, tastier.'
Isn't just about ALL advertisement some form of lying?
And then to hear a bunch of lawyers are lying ... well, I'm not surprised.

"Nope, no one can see you, so logically, you do not exist."

everyone else:
Good grief! Lighten up! It's starting to sound more like a semantics convention in here, instead of a themed discussion about the original post .... ("People who use semi-colons on the left side, please ... people more in tune with commas to the right. People who hyphenate - they have a place for you in the hallway.")

IMHO:

Mickey burgers

January 6, 2008 3:14pm

While I love the idea of food in the shapes of pop icons (I know a few pop icons I'd like to eat), I was surprised no one commented on Cory's throw-away line - "... soylent brown is cartoon characters!"
re: the book 'Make Room! Make Room!' by Harry Harrison - later turned into the movie 'Soylent Green' w/ Charlton Heston, and Heston's classic line "Soylent Green is made out of people!" when he discovers Edward G. Robinson's character dies and is ... processed ....

Rat burgers may yet be our best option.

Build-a-Speaker Kit from JVC-Victor

November 14, 2007 2:26pm

Joel, Joel, Joel ....
Speakers work like this:

1. Music is played (CD player, turntable, whatever).
2. Wire connected to player allows music to travel to speaker.
3. The bass (in the music) naturally tickles, so the speaker wiggles, and the sound comes out - taa daa!

Yeah, I know ... that's why I 'LOL'd what I said about Sony and 'new battery technology' ...

Roomba, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

November 7, 2007 9:55am

Point to remember - a 'rechargeable battery' will eventually DIE, and will need replacing. Over time, these batteries will hold less and less charge, til the point they're completely unusable (but it sounds like you have other issues as well).

This applies not only to helpful housecleaning robots, but also to cell phones, laptops, remote control devices, personal massagers (um, probably could have left that one off the list) - but you see what I'm driving at here ...
The only cure is better battery technology - and I think Sony is working on this ... LOL!

MLB rips off fans who bought DRM videos

November 7, 2007 9:50am

As a baseball fan, I think this (DRM-crap on legally purchased MLB items) really sucks. However, since I first learned of DRM (from the BB gang), I've been berry berry careful of any and all purchases (whether 'store-bought' CDs, etc.), to make sure DRM is NOT included - I've even become somewhat of an 'anti-DRM' disciple, passing along the bad news to friends, and warning them of possible consequences ....
Yeah, I think this guy does need some legal advice ...

Handsome spherical rock

November 6, 2007 1:30pm

Layers? Yes ... mud and silt, etc. - but that doesn't mean it's external shape happened at the same time the layers were being laid (rocks get laid? Hrm) .. Anyways, some rocks are 'rounded' as they are ground into harder subsurface layers as glaciers slide over them (but even with the motions of continents and changes in weather, I don't think that applies in southern Cali, does it?) - which means WATER, lots of it, rolling said rock around, like a gemstone in a tumbler ... but even that's unlikely, as nice and roundy and smoothie as this particular bowling .. HEY - that's it, it's a really dang big bowling ball!
but that's just my 2 cent's worth ....
