Kids' game adds 500-1000 words to its forbidden list every day
May 9, 2008 12:56pm
I think using some form of censoring/moderation on their site is not a bad thing (it is their own site, and it is for kids.). However, this system is silly. (I've seen this on message boards too.) A kid might use a word innocently and actually LEARN it has a "dirty" meaning.
VMK (Virtual Magic Kingdom) Actually has the opposite aproach, an expanding (Well, I think it is) white list.
If there are 250,000 words in the english language (according to oxford) then they'll run out of words in 250-500 days!

That's pretty cool.
"Keep it away from your face, and never spray at anyone else - capsaicin in the eyes hurts like hell. Pepper spray is nasty, evil stuff and should never, ever be used on anything except food." Not even muggers?

I couldn't find the server on the list, but I just used "connect". Come to think of it, I didn't need a password.
It was really fun playing against you guys. I was Foolster41, playing mostly as heavie) and I think
I saw Boxthor and Turtle. (Those CP_well matches were great. :) )
Appreche: "Easy" is a term dependent on the people you play against. I'm not very good at the game, so it's very tough for me.
Felix: I thought the server was VAC secured (So cheating should be just about impossible.)
If it isn't, why not? I assume some technical reason.
Ben Stein: "science leads you to killing people"
May 1, 2008 10:01pm
I agree that saying just "science makes people kiill people" is pretty stupid. On the other hand, I wouldn't say "Religion leades to killing people" either. People don't need perticularly any reason to go crazy/selfish and kill other people.
EFF and security experts to Congress: We need hearings on Customs laptop seizures and snooping
May 1, 2008 1:05pm
well, better than just disclosing the methods and procedure would be to reform the DHS/Border Control to NOT preform illegal search and seizers from American Citizens in the first place. This is a good first step, but what we need is precedent to have our 4th amendment rights not stop at the border.
DHS grounds air marshalls for having names similar to the no-fly list
May 1, 2008 12:56pm
I know this has been said before, but bears repeating.
Why the HECK are people they think MIGHT be terrorists are just told to go away? If somehow they were preventing actual terrorists, shouldn't they I don't know- be ARRESTED? Proof that they don't really believe that everyone their turning away are terrorists. Yay for security theater.

Er. My bor just corrected me. "Dinvine mandate" I think is the term. and the book was the sequal "Shadow of the giant" not "shadow the hedgemon". (Both are excelent though.)

Basicly, what I think Tauken is getting at is, China has lost it's "divine will". (Apollogies if I'm using the term wrong, something I picked up from Orson Scott Card's "Shadow of the Hedgemeon", which takes a very good look at geo politics and seems very timely.)
As Abraham Linceon once said of America "This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it."
I'm not sure I get what the "nuke 'em" comment is about. All in all though I don't think it's any of the US's business to intervene directly unless we become allies to the tibet goverment in exile. A stopping of purchase of Chineese goods perhaps as a protest to the attrocities by the Chineese goverment, but that may well end up hurting the people rather than doing any good.
How police harassment, jailhouse snitches, and a runaway war on drugs imprisoned an innocent family
April 14, 2008 1:56pm
So, was the drugs planted? The begining seems to indicate false information led to the arrest, but then it mentions physical evidence (cocaine at the house.)
Quake family tree

Wow. This is really cool. Can you imagine if they did include not just Quake engine but inspirations from older games like Doom and Wolf3D, and things afterword? That'd be insane.

Leonhill: I admit maybe "fascism" is too strong a word.
Nick D: What I was saying was that the police were doing their job, arresting someone who was doing something ilegal (because it's dangerous) and the arrests shouldn't be seen as suppression. (It wasn't even exp[licited said here, but it sounded like someone might get the wrong idea.) I don't see how I was being "arrogant". As I said, what's happening in tibet is serious and I suppose there are times when one does need to do something dangerous to get attention to atrocities. I'd even say their braver than I am.

"There are no underground churches in China". I know for a fact that this is untrue.

I am not against China. I respect their ideology and soveringty. But I do not respect fascism and deniel of human rights. (So Weither it is really a "people's repulic" is exactly what's important.)
Pointing the finger at someone else's wrong doesn't make your own countries wrongs disapear.

Lionhill:
There is a big difference between America and China in terms of goverment. There are no underground churches in America. Why is that? Most of America's trouble has been arguablly too much security. You cite abuses like Gitmo, etc. but that's moslty been only a problem for america for the last 8 years or so. Acording to you America isn't enough of a police state like China.
Things like Justice are good things to strive for, but if the Chinese government was really striving to be a good democracy, then why are they still toruring prisoners? Why is there heavy regulation on religion still? You need to open your eyes and see you are being lied to by your government. I'm not very knowlegable about china, but I know people have been there and I have heard the stories of what doesn't look like a "people's republic" to me.

I would caution about seeing this as a freedom of speach case. You dind't say it explicitly but I thought it mgiht be implied.
Climbing the golden gate bridge is dangerous, and I see that as reason enough for their arrest (Though they should only get a smaish fine and spend no more than a couple days in jails if at all.).
While their acitvism and conern about the serious situaiton in Tibet is commendable, there are less dangerous ways of doing it.

RIP Raymond Leblanc, publisher of Tintin
March 25, 2008 1:44pm
an, that's sad. I grew up on Tintin. Destinati0on moon and the 7 Christal balls are probibly my favorites. I'm pretty sure I've read just about all of them.
I'm looking foreword to the movie. If both peilberg and Jackson are involved there's a very good chance of it being good. (THough I've been disapointed by "big names" before.)
Creationist documentary premiere bars science blogger, accidentally lets in Richard Dawkins
March 21, 2008 5:29pm
I find it sad that things like this is labeled "propaganda" before you have even seen it. Also, it isn't helpful except for creating a hostile "us and them" mentality.
It is also sad the person got barred, having an outside opinion would either give a negetive response (He disagrees, but then it would be the same as always) or perhaps he might be convinced. In other words, they would have nothing to loose. I would hope it was a mistake, though I wouldn't nessicerly count on it.
Fun straws are phallic?
March 18, 2008 2:14pm
Oh, I was meaning to also say that I think on the other side over-reacting to nudity in art is foollishness. In fact, I have no priblem I have no problem with children being exposed to stuff like the statue of David or the like, as long as the nudity part is not made a big deal of.
Fun straws are phallic?
March 18, 2008 2:11pm
Honestly, I don't blame her for complaining, and I don't think she's over-reacting, though you'd think there'd be a picture on the box. We live in an open society people are allowed (and should be allowed) to express a dislike with a product.
It really does look like what she's saying it look slike. Anything else is a pretty big stretch.
IWood: You're right, companys should be held accountable.
gtbernstein: So, males do not have areas of their body that's different than women's? I think there is a misunderstanding of those who advocate things like modesty. At least I know I agree with a notion of public modersy, but I disagree that a part of the body is "icky" or "shameful" but that around children of up to a certin age it should be kept under wraps for practical reasons. One anallogy is one's socuial security number. It is not something to be "ashamed" of, but it is kept secret.
Steampunk Magazine issue 4
March 17, 2008 5:48pm
So today I printed out the rest of volume 1 and all of volume 2 at the local library (for no cost to me). It just seemed so approperiate considering the topic of the magazine. :)
I used 11x17. I couldn't do double sided there, but I just folded the pages bakc and front alternitivly and it turned out very well.
House votes against telcom immunity for illegal wiretapping
March 15, 2008 2:52pm
My question is, why can't they just outnumber the president? can't they just get a 2/3 majoirt to overrule a veto? At least, that's how I thought that's the way it works, adn this is a prime example of WHY the senate has such power.
London cops declare war on photography
March 4, 2008 5:59pm
So now Britin is calling themselves terroists?
People should seriously report those CCTV cameras as suspicious. Maybe they'd get the hint at their own hypocracy.

I admit, I keep looking for myself and my family in these photos. :) (My costume was mildly obscure, Mae Heughs from Full Metal Alchamist.)
Comiccon was really cool. Nice photos. I would have gotten a autograph if I knew you were there.

as someone who is autistic (asberger's to be exact) I'm not sure I'd see it asan "evolutionary step." either, though perhaps looking at it as not a disease to be cured is a very good thing in my mind.
Steampunk Magazine issue 4
February 27, 2008 12:29am
I was happy to see the cover art is by Shoomlah, who I'm a fan of and watch on deviantart.
My favorite article in this issue is the one on making a Jacob's ladder (No, not the wood toy.) I almost want to try to make one, but I'm a bit afraid to try. (Understandibly, I think considering it involves quite a bit of electricity!)
Poker game interrupted by police raid
January 16, 2008 9:11pm
I'm not quite sure I get why gambling, especialy small risk poker is even illegal. I mean, gambling can be kind of dumb (Especial in casinso since you are going to loose mcuh more than you loose.)
China: "citizen journalist" beaten to death
January 16, 2008 5:56pm
This is horrible news.
Capt: While I agree our current "regime" (I asume you are also American) is far from the best we could have, we have a system for electing a new regime every 4 years, it apears under the communist regime in China they do not.
HOWTO Write a decent novel in two months

Hmm.This article looks pretty cool. I'll have to bookmark this and read it when I have more time. I've been trying to actually finish a novel. (I failed a Nanowrimo attempt last year).
Lego geodesic dome

Cool. I think there's a typo. In the article you say "demo" when I think you meant "dome".
Wolf Boy on the loose
December 21, 2007 11:03pm
He doesn't even have yellow eyes yet. Maybe there's hope yet. He needs Aes Sedai :)
I don't know how reliable the daily mail is, but those feet look like the feet of someone who doesn't know how to yuse nail clippers. Ew.
Doing research I can find to credible links from the ny times. I also checked the houstin chronicle (I paper that has a pretty good national and international news coverage.) I found a link on the USA today sight to a propellor story, but the link goes to a 404. I tend to lean twords this being a hoax.
Woman ticketed after goats caught mating
December 21, 2007 12:07am
I want to know why police are wasting their time on this crap, pulling over people to give them a coffee and not doing things like, i don't know arresting criminals. Are police just bored from lack of crime? I suppose I can't complain if that's the case.
Fake news from the RIAA
December 21, 2007 12:03am
Producers never sell at flee markets.
Not every disc at a flee market is illegal. In other words, it'd be a terrible crime in their eyes to for someone to sell a CD when their done with it (Not nesscierly copying first either!)
Actually I wouldn't be surprised if this was legit, though "suspicous packaging" from their own criteria make this seem fake. I kind of hope it isn't just for the irony factor.
Chicago police ask you to report people using maps or taking notes in public
December 19, 2007 2:34pm
Good to see Chicago is serious about the war against tourism.. (Couldn't resist).
Seriusouly, tourists are not allowed to take commemorative pictures or get lost and need maps? I'll grant using binoculars in a city is a little strange except at sporting events.
But seriously this just another sign that paranoia and seeing every little thing as a possible terrorist threat has gone too far.
Mole man evicted from underground burrow

I bet the password to get in is "molepeople". But look out for the NSF. (yeah, I know I'm a nerd but that game was awsome and underrated)
Library's clever answer to network filtering
November 1, 2007 9:45pm
Hmm. weird. my message never showed up. :(
We have a small libary branch IN a mall out in washington at South Center mall.
I agree filtering can be annoying. I was trying to do research on weaponry for a fantasy story I was writing and I was filterned out. Hapily I could ask for a unfiltered account and it was pretty painless.
Dungeons & Dragons 4.0 Makes Remote Pen-and-Paper Play Easier
October 17, 2007 10:44pm
My younger brother turned me on to D&D, and I've really enjoyed it. I played for a while, then our group kind of drifted apart. Right now I'm kind of looking to GM my own game, or get in to one online.
When I heard it was going to be simplified, I became a little worried. I liked the richness of the physics of 3.5 (The only system I'm really familiar with really.)
I'm all for technology making things simplier (I love the fact I can look up stuff in the SRD online, thanks to WotC's Open Game Liscence). Having a system for playmat with figures isn't so bad either, as long as it's not expensive, I start having problems if it's reduced down to the simplicity of Final Fantasy. While Final Fantasy isn't a bad series, it's definitely not the same kind of thing as what Dungeons and Dragons has been.
I agree D&DO was a BIG mistake. Basically their trying to beat out WoW, which isn't probibly going to happen (Lots of money, very well established). The Irony is then Blizzard made the same mistake by publishing a pen & paper version that is probibly not going to nudge out D20/D&D. Oh well.

Modern phrenologists "predict" terrorism with biometrics
October 6, 2007 9:32pm
Putting aside the whole thing about whither it is science of not,
This makes me nervous, as any system that is basically behavior based (doing normal actions in a combination) to indicate one is ABOUT to commit a terrorist attack. What I mean by normal action of course precludes obvious indicators like purchasing explosives or something like that.
Sure, catching terrorists before they do stuff is good, but this just sounds more of the terrorist paranoia craze (See TSA, Boston Police Incidents) and is far to likely to be abused.

Court declares parts of Patriot Act unconstitutional

Naomi Wolf on Colbert Report: 10 steps to fascism
September 23, 2007 12:59am
Wow. looking back at my post I realized I was vague on some points. Not sure if the "conservative folks" comment was aimed partly at me, but i feel I should clearify.
I agree this whole "look out for terrorists ZOMG!" paranoia trend with the TSA crap and wiretapping crap is definitely bad. I'm not extremly worried because from what i see of public opinion I have a feeling the pengalum is going to swing far in the other direction, simply from how bad a job Bush did (Ok, maybe it's also some wishful thinking).
I am somewhat more conservative, but I do enjoy about 95% of what's here, that's why I'm still here.
I think good reference is the article that was linked from BB not too long ago (I think it was actually a link from a link, sorry I don't know where it is. :( ). It was about how the system we have now is only instilling terror in the people, thus giving the terrorists what they want.

Naomi Wolf on Colbert Report: 10 steps to fascism
September 21, 2007 10:58pm
I agree with CantStopTheSignal. This is by the way the same kind fo thing Dawkins (who is commonly posted about here) spouts, how the "evil right" is trying to take over America and the world. I read BB despite this, and I tend to ignore anything even vaugely sounding like it has the message of warning of "the evil left" or "the evil right."
(And CantStopTheSignal, I love your name. Good to meet a fellow browncoat.)
UK police using hovering camera for surveillance

These things remind a little too much of the annoying camera bot things from the dystopia city in half-Life 2.
Bookcase built into chair
September 11, 2007 7:18pm
It didn't come out as well as I hoped, but here's a replica for Second Life! I'm kind of a bilbiophile (I've been making/collecting books on SL) so this made a good building project for me. I'm going to work on improving it in the 2.0 version with the lamp (which I forgot) and maybe the trim (Not sure how to do that except to either use lots of parts, or make my own texture).

Neat. This reminds me of a Qbasic program I wrote that took a progression of scales the user wanted, and then played random notes in the scale in jazz time. It didn't sound great (Maybe If I used midi instead of the terrible sound card notes) nut the notes sounded like they go together.
