Taking pictures on LA's Red Line violates the "9/11 Law"
May 14, 2008 3:28pm
The disembodied voice on the PA had no authority over you to order to do anything unless you were acting in a manner that threatened the safety of the members of the public on the platform or the public property.
When confronted by the voice on the 'box' you should have asked for a badge number and the name of the 'sheriff's' sergeant.
Then you should have asked for the name of the shift supervisor for the transit worker that cursed at you.
More than likely, all of these people were exceeding their 'authority' to prevent you from photographing anything.
Is driving better than cycling?
May 14, 2008 10:38am
Our overweight population is already consuming plenty of energy for bike riding...1. Eat fat people.
2. Bike to work.
3. Two problems solved at one time.
Analog switchoff == DRM screwjob

This is SOP for an industry that offers products that have no real, lasting, tangible or intrinsic value. That's one reason why I still prefer paper-based books over e-books.
No book I've ever bought has ever snapped it's cover closed and said I can't read it here or there, or after a certain arbitrary period of time has elapsed.
If they're so worried about people stealing content, then why don't they make something worth stealing.

Nowadays, the only time the T-Men will bust anyone for defacing currency is if they can catch them in the act
Or, if they are stupid enough to post their handiwork on flickr. With their picture.

Al Capp's "Fearless Fosdick" inspiration for Kurtzman's Mad?
May 8, 2008 6:26pm
As a kid we would always pick up the Sunday 'Daily News' after church at the local delicatessan. Dad would never allow us to read the 'funny papers' until he did because we would always "make a mess of them with our 'Silly Putty' and what not." His favorites were 'Dick Tracy' and 'L'il Abner'. 'Fearless Fosdick' was one of his favorite Al Capp characters because of its' parody of his most favorite comic, 'Dick Tracy'.

I am totally fascinated with the graphic style that these publications are created in. Although it predates the animation style of Jay Ward and Alex Anderson, back to at least the mid-forties, seeing illustrations like these always reminds me of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Anyone out there know the roots of this illustration genre? Some links to examples maybe?

Hunt for the kill switch in microchips
April 30, 2008 6:12pm
The concern by the Pentagon over the 'off-shoring' of microchip production has been a topic that has been discussed in the semiconductor industry, ad-nauseum, for the last thirty years. There was even talk of forming a consortium of manufacturers to produce all the chipmaking equipment here in the U.S. to insure the 'integrity' of the parts and to prevent the transfer of technology to the Japanese, of all people. They didn't know what to do about it then; they cannot possibly do anything about it now.

Headless man sues over missing PKD robot, loses

I have been completely baffled throughout this ordeal as to how one can board an aircraft with a 'head-in-a-box' and leave it behind when one gets off the plane. Really now, it's not like it was a sweater or a pair of gloves. Hanson, what were you thinking about?
Camel "Crush" cigarettes spray menthol from internal capsule

Does anyone remember 'Waterford" cigarettes? They had little beads in the 'pinch filter" that broke when crushed -like this product- wetting the cellulose filter to produce that 'turkish tobacco' flavor. Smooth.

Anti-teen noise-weapon comes to the USA
April 23, 2008 8:31pm
@16
No, you are not. Because cyanide is a federally controlled, hazardous substance, that requires permits and compliance. To deploy cyanide to prevent teenagers from gathering on your property, would create an environmental hazard, as well as a hazard to public health and safety, that you cannot control. That could be construed as 'reckless disregard' and if it were to be combined with a possible death, you would be the next one breathing the cyanide. The teenagers, on the other hand, can just walk away from the 'annoying sound'.
Anti-teen noise-weapon comes to the USA

James Alan Fox fails to realize that this is not a 'crowd-monitoring' device but a 'crowd-mitigating' device. If this is deployed by private citizens to protect private property, then neither the ACLU or any other group holds a valid opinion on the subject.

Retro-future space visions - "2063 A.D.," from General Dynamics Astronautics.
April 15, 2008 7:22pm
Before the deconstruction of these 'cold war fortresses', there used to be a place in Kearney Mesa (an industrial area north of San Diego, Ca where GD had one of it's main research facilities, http://tinyurl.com/4gzbmp) called 'Missile Park'. It had inert engineering samples of many of the Sixties era missile systems that GD produced at that time and they were surrounded by swing sets and slides for children to play amongst the delivery systems for some of the most terrible weapons ever created by humankind.
I distinctly remember when the demolition of the facility in Kearney Mesa was started in the early 1990's. The demo contractor left the Atlas missile that was in front of the main building entrance standing until all the buildings around it were leveled. It stood, alone, amongst the destruction taking place around it, like a testament to the destructive power that this system was capable of delivering. It was truly a surrealistic sight to see that gleaming stainless steel behemoth sitting amidst acres of empty ground, where once 'cold warriors' had toiled to keep us free from the 'evil empire' of Communist oppression.
Sadly, Missile Park, along with virtually all traces of this era in American Cold War history, have vanished from the San Diego landscape. They have been replaced by non-descript industrial parks -or huge parking lots for new cars being rail-dropped into town- that pay no homage to the struggles of the engineering minds that once toiled within the walls of those 'freedom factories'.
Water filled plastic bags on trees scare bugs away?

@51 - ROTFLMAO
#37 - the sun alone doesnt have the same effect because air doesnt bend light, while water does bend light...
Well that explains why mirages of beatiful oases are figments of the imagination of dehydrated desert travelers. NOT.
A ray of light changes direction everytime that it encounters a change in the density of the medium through which it it is traveling; the effect is called refraction. That's why sunsets are red and the shimmering 'puddles' of water that appear in the distance on those hot roads in the summer disappear when you get close to them. It's also the principle upon which the lens of your eye works. Oh, and by the way, the sky is blue because of Rayleigh scattering.

April 8, 1953: first big Hollywood 3D film

IMDB lists the USA premiere date as April 9, 1953:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046036/releaseinfo
Hot on the heels of this release was one of my all-time favorites, 'It Came From Outer Space', which was based on a Ray Bradbury short story entitled, 'The Meteor'. It featured Richard Carlson of 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' fame and the always beautiful, Barbara Rush. This film featured excellent 3-D effects which have to be experienced from a good print of the film to be appreciated.
