Device projects images onto things tourists are taking photos of
June 25, 2008 10:44am
which would be ironic since every flash photograph taken would also result in the text being flashed at the painting.. which would ultimately lead to those words being burned into the painting..
but yes, i'm sure it would be used for that in some way..
also..
it really makes me want to make one and take it to the alamo.. maybe.. "Ozzy was here" written like its piss.. could really fool some folks

Nesting box for birds made to look like a skull
June 9, 2008 10:58am
we had a cow scull on our back porch that a small bird used as a nest. the nest with actually inside where the brain would be, and the little bird would pop in and out of the whole where the spinal chord exited the scull.
it was quite cool to see

Office worker flips out (security video)
June 4, 2008 12:37pm
AVRAM - well sure but watch her get hit. that don't look fake to me. and who on earth would micromanage the staging of the video so much that they would include her getting hit so precisely and all the supporting cast members then deal with her wound.
Office worker flips out (security video)
June 4, 2008 12:15pm
and to this notion of the camera angle being too perfect and catching all the action...
its a security camera, the whole purpose of the camera is for it to be able to catch all the action in that room clearly. sure the guy could have run completely out of the room but he didn't and so everything is on camera. if it had been a "lucky" placement of some guy's video camera, that would be one thing, but that camera was placed there to catch strange goings on, and it did.
Office worker flips out (security video)
June 4, 2008 12:09pm
my clue to the veracity is the second victim. she get smacked in the head by what looks like her lamp and is in pretty bad shape.. she later, the co-worker attending to her can be seen handing her a new tissue for the obvious cut on her head. if this was fake, i doubt they would have kept going with somebody getting injured like that.
and to the question of why people are all still standing around, the fact that this video and its buddies are all over the inter-webs and even on boingboing should answer that question. nobody wants to miss something like this.
so yes, it seems too good to be true, but it looks real to me.
D.C. to require ID to enter certain neighborhoods?
June 4, 2008 11:06am
well it's obvious they are using "id checks" to scare people who might have something to hide from entering the neighborhood.
it won't stand

Sunset on Mars
June 3, 2008 3:59pm
will somebody please invent a new and vastly more effective form of propulsion and energy production so we can hurry up and terraform Mars.
also.. i think its safe to say that we are not going to endanger any important martian life forms, so lets hurry up and start sending "seeds" of life over there to get the ball rolling.
there has got to be some kind of life form on this planet that could survive there.
Anti-kid modifications to public steps

In all these instances of kids hanging out and becoming a nuisance, there is probably a park not too far away that they have been kicked out of.
build more parks, and don't bother the kids who hang out there.
or shit.. if you really want to put a stop to ever single bit of the problem, build a few select parks in the city where pot and underage drinking is legal. you will never ever have a problem with noisy teens again.

Italian tourist detained by Homeland Security for visiting his American girlfriend
May 15, 2008 12:51pm
I don't know, i might have to side with the agents on this one.
this guy is claiming to be an Italian male who is coming to the states to see his american "girlfriend" and her "family".
sure, plenty of american girls go to Italy and meet Italian men, but the second their visa runs out, he's stuffing her and her bags into his Fiat Panda and high-tailing it to the airport.
i call shenanigans
Cruising for chicks, Saudi Arabian style
May 14, 2008 1:51pm
@3: ok good point, but what what is cruising if it's not about finding love, especially in a society that is not going to allow you get anywhere near each other before you are married?
and anyway, the word love can be replaced with the word lust, and that sentence has the same if not stronger meaning.
Cruising for chicks, Saudi Arabian style

is much as i am against this kind of over the top, government enforced, "morality", it does seem a bit romantic.
don't get me wrong, i wouldn't wish this sort of life on even the most adamant Hagee follower, but there is just something about the story that seems exciting.
its probably the fact that many people find it extremely exhilarating to have to sneak around and hide their love.
lord knows Juliette's interest in Romeo wouldn't have endured the fatal blow which is "dad's approval".
Mazda destroys 4,703 shiny new cars worth $100 million
April 29, 2008 3:40pm
I don't understand where the people at Mazda got the idea that their image was so great that donating their possibly sub-par vehicles would do irrevocable harm.
do they think that they are already at or near the to of the heap, and thus the benefits of those donations couldn't bring the brand as much PR as a couple of bad ones could?
well i guess it makes a little sense in this world of bold print headlines and fine print clarifications.
but still.. could have really helped a few people out.
Middlesbrough cops, goons and clerks grab and detain photographer for shooting on a public street
April 22, 2008 8:07am
somebody needs to set up a fund to help people in this situation sue the crap out of their attackers. the only way this will go away is if several high profile cases yield big payouts to victims. its sad to think that lawsuits are the only way to get things done, but then look at all the rights we enjoy here in America that were secured by the use of judicial system.

Ill. Rep. Monique Davis: it's dangerous for children to know atheists exist, orders atheist to stop testifying

replace "Atheist" with "Islam" or "Judaism" and this woman would be out of a job faster than HD-DVD assembly line workers.
And the Christians in this country have the nerve to claim they are the oppressed ones.
Man installing satellite TV kills wife

@32 "Why do anti-gun people always sink to the level of equating the Second Amendment to people possessing "landmines and grenade launchers"?"
because people defending the Second Amendment always point out, as #39 did, that we need the guns to protect us from our own government.
you aren't going to get far against our military without any explosives, and last i checked, you need a license for those.
can you understand why our government would require a license for handling explosives?
Man installing satellite TV kills wife
March 28, 2008 12:41pm
@30 as to the comparison you provided likening auto licensing to gun licensing, i would just like to point out that the government requires licenses for cars on public roads because there is where you actions go form self endangerment to public endangerment. i know you know this, but i think this story is a perfect example of why guns endanger the public even when you are on your own private property.
Saying "i shouldn't need a license as long as I'm not shooting the gun in public" doesn't do much to protect the people living in the apartment above or below you.
we need licenses to handle explosives because they can dangerous to us and dangerous to others, both of those dangers apply to firearms.
@39 - our best protections from a tirranical government are our sons and daughters in our all volunteer military.

@30 - i stand corrected. we certainly do need more regulation.
Man installing satellite TV kills wife
March 28, 2008 9:44am
@19 - I'm not a gun owner either, yet i do support the right to own. I mean really, cars are the leading cause of accidental death in this country and i drive one every day, how can i do that and demand others give up their guns.
A while back, a friend of mine went to a gun show and bought himself an AK-47 with 20 round Banana clip for 150 bucks and walked out with it in less then 30 minutes. no background check, nothing more then "sign here and yer set". He tolled me it was ridiculous that he was able to get that gun so easy.
as for gun licensing, i don't think a license per gun is what I'm talking about.. more a "license to own", we already require some serious licensing for people who want to own fully automatic assault rifles, and silencers, and things like that. this would just be a lesser restrictive version of that.

This is very sad, but i can't help but be reminded of that Simpsons episode where homer gets a gun and proceeds to use it for everything form opening bottles of beer to changing the channel on his TV.
in a side note, according to the recent "Moderation Policy" post, this entry is likely to "generate a huge thrash that goes nowhere".
so i might as well get the ball rolling by saying that licensing firearms will not stop stuff like this from happening but it certainly can help reduce this kind of stuff, and while i understand the notion that "guns are our right so you can regulate them, period", we all recognize freedom of speech as a right just as (if not more) fundamental, yet we accept a government's right to demand licenses for protests, radio stations, and any number of activities that are fully protected by the 1st amendment.
also, guns are fun to shoot.
