Pop-bottle snap-on cup makes ice cream floats on demand
May 16, 2008 8:11am
@Mongo
Yeah I remember those and it was what immedialty came to mind when I saw the post. I was pretty young but I seem to recall it being during the Nixon / Kennedy presidential race and the product was called Mixen or something like that. I still get flashes of the icecream/7-up mixers when I hear Nixons name.

Ricochet Wireless Network Finally Kaput
April 2, 2008 12:34pm
That is sad. I was an early adopter of Ricochete for a client of mine who had a team of Sales guys that needed to get thier orders in every day. it was cool but when they originally went belly up and contracted back to Denver they never really recovered.
There is even one of their stations still attached to the streetlight outside my house.

Has your website been unfairly blocked by censorware?
February 27, 2008 9:03pm
I don't have a story about being blocked but I do have a story about the beginnings of this. Back in the 90s as a consultant I met with a guy that wanted to create a safe place for kids to go on the internet. I was no expert on the matter, but I groked what he wanted and understood enough about the internet to tell him that yes the kiddies could go to his site and all his content would be clean and that sure he could, given his AOL style proprietary model, could control the sites visited via his software. Understanding that he would have to hire a staff of people whose only job it would be was to search for and block IP addresses of inappropriate sites. But all the kid would have to do would be open Netscape or IE and they could go anywhere they wanted. That was 10 or 15 years ago and of course we are much more sophistocated in how we deal with the intertubes now but at the time, I sat in his office, understood what he wanted to do, even emphathised with his views, but still. With out control of the domains there was nothing he could do to make money and see his dream. I told him I could not help him and left his office.
My point? You cannot censor a free and open network. You have to watch your kids. The whole point of the internet was guaranteed communication in the event of nuclear war. The message will get through.
Another success in Homeland Security's War on Babies
February 15, 2008 6:48pm
For the most part I agree with you all. I am pissed. I took a few moments to write this to my Reps in DC
Dear {}
One of the key issues that I feel needs immediate and vocal attention from the floors of the Senate and the house is the return of our cival rights taken by the fear mongers who are seeking to create what appears to be a police state. The DHS has crossed the boundries at every turn but an incident that I read today on MSNBC was the final straw. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23185937/
A 14 week old Samoan baby was enroute to a hospital in Hawaii for emergancy heart surgery was detained by DHS in the Honolulu and as a result died.
I am outraged and I certainly expect that you are too.
In what world does a critically ill baby, his mother and a nurse get held up by customs only to die in their hands.
As my Elected representative I call on you to do the right thing. This nonsense has to end.
Eric
I suggest you all do the same.
We must get our rights back
Reports of 5th undersea 'net cable cut
February 6, 2008 8:22am
One of the greatest intelligence coups of the cold war was the US nuclear submarines literally wire tapping into the transatlantic cables.
I suspect this is a like operation.
Could be Iran - they have Diesel Submarines
Could be US - Our SSN is bored and need a mission since thay can no longer chase after Capt Ramius.
But to what end. The war between the islamic fundie and the western world is fought on a couple of fronts. (Agree with it or not I am just speaking to the fact it exists)
With the internet the Fundies are really doing quite well on the propaganda front.
If it was the US I would guess it is an attempt to interdict into that front. Cut em off would be a bit heavy handed. I think the more elegant thing would be to tap and fine out where they are or better yet hax the packets.

Poker game interrupted by police raid
January 16, 2008 11:15am
On its face it seems to be an inconsequential card game among friends but the one thing that stuck out in my reading of the post was that there were around 100 participants.
That is a good crowd and I kept getting images of a young Henry Hill running drinks as Jimmy Conway passes around franklins.
That is a pretty large operation and I am not supprised that it raised enough police eyebrows to justify an investigation.
Remember the Vice squads have a different mission then the robbery squads. so of course they are going to investigate.
Having played devils advocate, yea I do think it was pretty much a wast to come in full swat gear. where simply walking in like a cop busting up a teenagers kegger would certainly suffice to break up the game.

Regardless I would suggest that all bloggers post the link and report on the story just to bury the Suits in the issue.

"The last thing we want security personnel to do is bother reporters who are carrying their own cameras around the show floor and trying to leave carrying said cameras. So the stickers say to security personnel, "you can ignore me, I belong to a reporter." "
What fundementaly bothers me about this statement is the assumption that people are up to no good. I see someone carrying a camera at CES that person must have stolen it so I now have the right to detain and harrass that person.
No crime has been witnessed or committed therefore no probably cause.
I have an idea, wait for someone to commit a crime and then fall on them like a ton of bricks.

Yeah that was the thing I remember thought I seem to recall them being marketed in Rocky the Squirrel heads and those of other cartoon characters.
I wonder if there is a patent infringement / conflict potential here. I noticed a patent number in the wiki you linked to.
It is cool that these are being manufactured again but If they tried to patent it....
