Interesting what an enormously high percentage of the posters in the Wal*Mart threads are either first timers or anonymous.

Is there some plausible explanation for this besides the possibility of clustering evil sock puppets trying to preemptively drown out legitimate discourse?

Pilot shoots hole in cockpit - trust is not transitive

March 27, 2008 8:40am

BTW, my favorite of Mr. Biddle's scenarios for what actually happened:

“Do you guys really carry GUNS?”

“Why yes little lady, some of us sure do. I carry a Sig .357, it’s the same gun those air-marshals use!”.

“Ooooh, can I hold it?”

“Of course, but you need to understand that I’m a trained professional, you can’t just {BANG}{SCREAM}

“oh shit”

Pilot shoots hole in cockpit - trust is not transitive

March 27, 2008 8:35am

Of course, no one actually RTFA... :-(

- The pilot was trained

was last requalified in the FFDO program last November

- The news article specified that a weapon was discharged in the cockpit, but DID NOT say that a bullet made a hole in the plane. In fact, they specifically mention that (erroneously I think):
If that bullet had compromised the shell of the airplane, i.e., gone through a window, the airplane could have gone down.

What I find most interesting is that the pilots must take a psychological test before being allowed to carry a firearm while flying their huge flying bomb...

Wal*Mart infection-spread timelapse video

March 25, 2008 8:29am

What I find very interesting is that the WalMart apologists in this thread are all first timers with no other posts. Almost as if they were hired by WalMart to surf the web to find negative stories (and what other kind is there about WalMart), create an account on that site and then try to neutralize the topic (or at least inject enough noise to confuse the issue).

Has WalMart started a net disinformation campaign?

And in the off chance you aren't WalMart shills, it's big corporations and other box stores that's the issue. We don't have to worry about robots taking over the future, we should be worried about SkyNet, Inc. though...

Discovery of the Mile High Comics collection

March 12, 2008 11:52pm

@#8-Jim.Cowling - I only read the linked article and haven't touched a comic book since the seventies. IOW, I don't know what the whole story may be. BUT, this does bring to the front an interesting (to me) issue. What is the responsibility of a collector versus that of a seller? At what point does a collector (who has spent x number of hours becoming informed as to the value of item z) become responsible for disclosing the estimated value of an item to the seller?

And please, I'm not talking about misrepresentation or used cars salesperson tactics, just about person A offering to sell person B item C. Why should person B refuse person A's offer until it is more beneficial to person A? By that reasoning, wouldn't the majority of transactions on eBay (in collector circles) be unfair?

Payday Loan scumbags prey on the elderly, illiterate, poor

February 21, 2008 9:05am

@2-Jeff: I normally enjoy reading your comments, but your sarcasm contributes nothing to this thread.
But as you point out, the government has long been abusing the poor in the form of state authorized gambling and heavy vice taxes. The govt. doesn't like competition though, so hopefully there'll be some action on this. Unfortunately I highly doubt the banking lobby would allow any material strengthening of the usury laws. :-(

As for this particular scam, I've no doubt these businesses are doing everything possible to pry every last cent they can from these poor people, but let's not forget that these people are also incredibly poor credit risks. If you read all the way through the article, you'll notice they briefly mention the myriad of other loans (which are going unpaid) that Ms. Rumph had. Frankly, these people (the victims) are not going to be the most financially responsible people out there. Then again, I know how difficult it can be to get out of a hole, especially when you have predatory lenders doing their best to keep you in the hole.

The poor can be a very profitable demographic. State Lotteries, rent-to-own stores, extremely high rate credit cards, income tax rebate 'now' places, check cashing places and those structured payment 'now' places. They're all designed to abuse the needy.

On a somewhat related note, Rob Cockerham of cockeyed.com has an interesting series on the proximity of liquor stores to check cashing places. Worth a look if you've got some time.

- Having them drive little cop clown cars.

Tripod-wielding photographer mistaken for would-be gunman

February 9, 2008 5:39pm

Police are still looking for the man that caused the lockdown, and if anyone has any info, they'd like you to call it in to Crime Stoppers. The man is white, around six-feet tall with a medium build, has brown hair with a prominent bald spot and long sideburns. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a lumber style jacket that was possibly green and thin glasses.

Why are they still looking for this guy if he's known to be wielding nothing more dangerous than a tripod?

And did you notice how the description changed from a man in camo to a man wearing blue jeans and a coat (the coat was possibly green)?

Southern racists adopt "Canadian" as a euphemism for "black"

January 28, 2008 3:52pm

@ #120 - Teresa N.H./Moderator:

Let me point out in Boston's defense that it was ground zero for the Abolitionist Movement. Also, I'm surprised that no one's pointed out that Canada was the terminus of the Underground Railway. I've been assuming all along that the use of "Canadian" currently under discussion owes a lot to that.

Amazon MP3 ID3 tag mystery solved -- bad file permissions and misinformed rep, not proprietary tags

Definitely looks interesting but I'm somewhat discouraged that they're still charging so much for a download. Hiroshima bomb pilot dies aged 92

November 2, 2007 2:09pm

@#31-JACK:
Hi Jack. In an effort to remain as on-topic as possible, I was specifically referring to Mr. LeMay's personal and direct responsibility for loss of life in the firebombing, not the fact that the firebombing took place at all. So, _no_, no one had mentioned it. :-)

My point in this matter being that I just find it curious that people attack Mr. Tibbets whenever this topic winds its way back to the forefront, but pay no heed to Mr. LeMay, who was certainly more complicit in the deaths of civilians if blame is to be laid. BUT, I really don't think it's our place to second guess soldiers about their duties, sixty plus years after the fact.

I *did* miss Sweep's mention of Dresden though. My bad. My only excuse is that his conclusions made me subconsciously forget most of his post.

Hiroshima bomb pilot dies aged 92

November 2, 2007 12:48pm

All these history 'experts' here and yet no one mentions Gen. Curtis LeMay's responsibility in the firebombing of Germany and Japan in which many more people died than in the atomic blasts? Was the bombing of Dresden at all necessary militarily?

As for possible posturing by the US in using the atomic bomb, I'm sure there's some truth to that. But to say that was the main reason is specious at best.

@#28-THE_BOY
That quote is attributed to LeMay, not McNamara.
