I'm so glad CNN, NPR, ABC, and all the news orgs have been all over this.

Lamarlowe, you beat me to it. I remember how awesome I thought those indentations were on our Oldsmobile when I was a kid. I mean, they were just begging for a drink to be set there!
Can the Smithsonian's public domain images join the Library of Congress's "Commons"?
January 19, 2008 7:19am
With the complaints of censorship at Flickr increasing, I get concerned about relying on such a corporate entity to host these wonderful images. What's really needed is a free (as in liberty, not as in gratis) site which can host images. It takes a lot of effort to post, comment, and tag these images. The possibility of having that work erased at the whim of the same company which helps China imprison bloggers is a real issue.
HOWTO Make a trashcan meat-smoker for less than $50

I'd rather go with Alton Brown's Corrugated Vapor Colloid Applicator.
Dell Crystal LCD Monitor
January 3, 2008 9:23pm
I don't see what the glass adds, especially since I'd rather use my own speakers. It looks sorta cool, sorta, but certainly not $900 worth of cool.
Fox helps itself to photo of blogger's dog
December 25, 2007 10:01pm
One time I had a top level blogger use one of my Flickr photos without attribution. I was happy he used it, but I wished he had credited me.
When I asked him about it, he said it was okay since Flickr labeled the photo as being "public". I'm not sure he quite got the distinction between viewing and republication.
Anyway, ever since then I've realized that Flickr's use of the phrase "This photo is public" can be confusing to people who want to use the image.
xkcd on the writer's strike: I miss Jon Stewart

Truly, the only thing I've missed is the Daily Show. But I have rediscovered the BBC new service.

Oh god. As anti-capitalist as I pretend to be, I really think this is pretty awesome.
Laughter yoga
December 17, 2007 11:01am
I remember an est laughter process, where the entire workshop group laughed for perhaps an hour or more, constantly being encouraged to go 100% with it. There were many emotions, culminating in something closer to ecstasy rather than just happiness.
Pig toy returns to normal after being squashed - video

I have it from a reliable source that these, while really nifty, have a tendency to rupture prematurely.
Bummer.

I'm more interested in Sharon Lund's "ashes scattered in paradise". Jungleland? Sleeping Beauty's Castle? Also, no birth and death dates!

Wireless Tasers Fired from Shotguns
December 10, 2007 3:56pm
The device which can be stacked "like Legos" isn't the XREP, but the Shockwave, which Taser says is for military use. Well, at least for now.

Hollowed out editions of your favorite books
October 23, 2007 9:52pm
J.K., I read Moby Dick, for the first time, this summer. It was absolutely fantastic! But "surprisingly quick" and "modern-sounding" certainly aren't descriptions which come to mind. "Grueling" is more like it. But very, very much worth the effort, I might add. I didn't enjoy Huck Finn, which I re-read earlier this year, nearly as much. Twain is a master, but Melville's use of language is beyond brilliant.
Now, to keep this on topic, I too must say destroying classics to stash your pot^H^H^H diamonds is officially a Bad Thing. I also feel the same way about libraries selling off "unpopular" books.
Hollowed out editions of your favorite books
October 23, 2007 12:00pm
When I was a teenager, my mom made a hollowed out books for me to store my, ummmmm, supplies. It took her about an hour and a half-bottle of white glue. The only problem was the book was The Last Days of Pompeii, which I really would have liked to read before it was destroyed. That said, it still sits on my shelf three decades later and serves its purpose well.
CNN's Glenn Beck: "people who hate America" losing homes in So CA wildfires
October 23, 2007 10:39am
I've only seen this reported in blogs and on Media Matters. Given the MSM hissy fit over the "General Betray Us" ad, and even Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" remark, the silence here is rather deafening.
As for why he's still on CNN, that's simple. Because the advertisers still feel he's good for their marketing.
A message from Sugar Information, Inc. -- "She needs sugar in her life."
October 18, 2007 7:52am
I love the "Note to Mothers". Yes, protect your kids. Feed them sugar. Lots and lots of sugar.
Crazy EULA makes you agree to a bunch of other EULAs
October 11, 2007 8:22pm
I can't imagine this aspect of the EULA is enforceable. But it would still take a chunk of cash and a good bit of time to prove it in court.
Crashed drug plane owned by US Government?

Skull wing tip shoes

Anybody who pays $750 for these is not a punk anything. That said, they're cool and Halloween Jack has the right idea.
Cops bust water-balloon pranksters
October 8, 2007 1:17pm
One story, I'd laugh. Eight stories, the guys are dangerous idiots. 180 days plus probation sounds fair if they're otherwise clean. I hope they don't get tagged as terrorists for this.

Lousy keypad design for automatic curtains

Yea, it could be better, but seems pretty straightforward. At least once you figure out what solid and sheer mean.
The View's flat earther blames "senior poopy moment"
September 19, 2007 11:10pm
aawoken, you are absolutely correct! Whoopi's mischaracterization of Newport News as the "Deep South", instead of the "South", is exactly the same as Sherri's not knowing whether or not the Earth is flat.
Oh, and look! She did a "hyper-corrrection or something" too. She's so stupid!
I'll look up corrrection later.
The View's flat earther blames "senior poopy moment"
September 19, 2007 7:47pm
Yes, we could all hear the collective "Awwwwwww, she just wants to feed her little boy". Because everyone knows those atheist scientists let their little kids starve.
Theocracy, do it for the kids!
Sex Pistols return
September 19, 2007 9:49am
No, they weren't the Milli Vanilli of their time, but they were the Monkees of their time.
Sex Pistols return
September 18, 2007 3:21pm
One of the two concerts I'm truly sorry for missing is the Sex Pistols at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles back in May of 1980 (the other was the Germs final show at the Starwood). Still, while this reunion might be fun, I can't help but think it's the antithesis of the Pistols ethos.
Mark Dery on Taco Bell

Mark Dery always rocks. BTW, it's the first time I've seen lunger used since I was in third grade. Good times.

I've been listing to the BBG stream for months and (unlike Soma, Woxy, 3wk, and other webcasts I listen to) I never grow tired of it. I mean, where else can I here 14 different versions of Hey Joe, or Gloria, or anything by Los Angeles Smog Division? An excellent, excellent web radio station.
