There's a Tribe Called Quest joke in there somewhere...

Photos from SF Zine Fair

July 22, 2008 1:30am

SF Zinefest was a blast this year, and that Wired article is just icing on the cake.
BTW, I'm the handsome guy on the right (with a big pile of yo-yos and zines). I just wrote a short recap of the weekend on my blog (here http://www.docpop.org/2008/07/21/post-sf-zinefest.html and more here http://www.docpop.org/2008/07/22/wired-boingboing-and-poop.html). I think Emily did a terrific job with the article, the pictures really captured the feel and it's cool that she noticed the link between zine culture and blogging.
BTW Cory, I hear that you've bought some jeans from Self Edge Denim (where I tailor). If you had your jeans altered, there is a good chance your scraps may have turned into one of the wallets on the table in the picture. You can see more of those recycled selvage wallets on http://www.docpopcrafts.com

MPLSDUB, doctorpopular.com is undergoing maintenance, but you can find my blog and everything else on www.DocPop.org. Stop by there sometime and say "hi".

Steampunk Soviet gas-mask

July 8, 2008 8:45am

This mask looks great. I love the look of the leather. I originally saw it last week on Steampunk Workshop, the same place Wired found the link.

Laser-cut typographic scarves

June 20, 2008 6:02pm

What a great idea. I just recently discovered ultrasuede and love working with it. I prefer using it instead of polyster because it breathes like leather does, which is pretty handy for wallets.
Here is one of my recent creations http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=12630853

Turbografx emulator hits iPhone

May 29, 2008 1:00pm

I was really hoping they'd show Bonk, that game was gorgeous.

It looks like the d-pad has been made larger than some of the other emulators, but there's really no replacement for tactile controllers. The problem with most of these emulators is trying to hit the buttons without having to look at them. Side scrollers like Super Mario (and Bonk probably has the same issue) are a total nightmare when you have to perfectly nail a jump over a pit of death or whatever.

Smokémon? Guy attempts to quit smoking by playing Pokémon.

April 17, 2008 4:01pm

I wonder how many people have started smoking to help kick their Pokemon addiction?

This story actually reminds me of a common trend in the skill toy community. I've heard many stories of how yo-yoers and jugglers got into yo-yoing to help quite their smoking habits. The trick is to find something to do with your hands, and something that can also keep your brain busy. Things like yo-yoing or pokemon are nice because there is also a goal associated with it, something to strive to.

Dick Cheney's shades reflect a strange being

April 10, 2008 1:27am

it just looks like a reflection of his hand to me. Holding something, perhaps a fishin' pole.

Maybe this could be some sort of Rorschach test.

Boss of F1 Grand Prix racing in Nazi-themed sex orgy scandal

April 7, 2008 6:58pm

speaking german does not equal being a nazi.

The article doesn't mention any swastikas or SS outfits so I'm afraid this is just going to be one of those really boring normal sex scandals.

1972 Ideal "Bing Bang Boing" commercial

March 30, 2008 11:57am

It's great to hear the ondioline in a commercial, that must have ben such a bizarre thing to hear back in the day. Like hearing the Beatles for the first time.

I like pretty much everything else about this video too. Especially those freaking rubber drums, excuse me "hum drums". They work so efficiently though. I'd love to see some really long train of them in action.

Lost Instruments: The Claviola

February 22, 2008 12:16pm

this device looks pretty similar to the Melodica.
a quick eBay search (or visit to a pawnshop) will yeild a wide variety of Melodicas to choose from.
I can't listen to the song now, but I'd be surprised if the two devices sounded any different.

20-sided die tattoo

If Z. started making nerdcore, his moniker could be "Z20".

That's how we roll.

Music producers mixing for MP3

December 29, 2007 1:57pm

Strangeglow nailed it.
Forget about how long mp3s or any other mediums are going to useful... The music is being released in the here and now, so we work with that.
When mixing an album, a good producer should always keep the intended media in mind.
If I was releasing an album on vinyl, cd, and online, I would definitely have three different mixes. It's just subtle tweaks, but if you were buying the album on vinyl, you'd feel a little gipped if it was mastered for for cd sound and not analog.
