Slim Gaillard's Vout dictionary: jazz hipster argot from the 30s
August 22, 2008 6:20am
Slim Gaillard is great. One of my favorite Slim Gaillard facts is that he was one of the first to do multi-track recording. There are several recordings where is is playing all of the parts.
Check out the track "Potato Chips" and you won't be sad.

There's no shortage of such equipment. Coincidentally, I just saw this invention the other day.

@ #21, 30, et al:
Coming in defense of SEO: Sure, the principles of SEO are pretty straightforward and can be easily explained to and implemented by a (possibly skilled) webmaster. But, as you move around the web, you've probably seen quite a few sites that can't get it right. To someone who understands, basic SEO isn't rocket science. But, having worked in SEO before, I've seen my share of eyes glaze over as I explain SEO 101. SEO is necessary in the same way that plumbers are, in my view. Even if I understand plumbing, I'd rather leave it to someone who has the experience to get it right. Nevermind that SEO gets pretty complicated when you're dealing with large sites or sites with password protected content that you want searchable...
Just like a lot of businesses (plumbers, mechanics, auto sales), there are an unfortunate number of scammers out there in SEO. The fact that scammers exist doesn't make the service unimportant, however.
Jesus hit by lightning

When I saw this on metafilter, I had just come back from Brazil. The only reason I didn't make it up to the Corcovado was because of the rain and electrical storms. That's what made me feel like it was a legit photo.
In response to the other comments that "wouldn't there be more photos of such a famous landmark being struck" (much like those of the empire state building): Jebus is atop a pretty high mountain and is often in the clouds. In the week I was there, I could see the statue for an hour. Most times that Jebus would be struck, he'd also be in the clouds. Additionally, most of Jebus's neighbors are pretty poor, so that means there are likely few web cams close enough to see him when he's in the clouds...
I think it's real.
Spanish fan-translation of Scroogled
October 11, 2007 5:14am
After reading the first page of the Spanish translated version, I wanted to see how it compared to the original. I was surprised to find a translation error by the second word. Six is translated as cinco. Sometimes my Spanish is bad, but...
Other than that, though, it seems like a good translation so far.

Dick Hafer was a family friend, even though my parents never quite agreed with his politics. As a result, we had copies of almost all of his books in the house. I read most of them at around 12 or 13 (in '90 or '91) and recall thinking that it was some kind of shock literature. A benefit of reading the material is that I didn't have to wait for the urban dictionary to come along before knowing a lot of terminology that my peers did not.
Politics aside, and they never really came up during get-togethers, Dick was a nice guy who had lots of fun crap to show a kid (autographs from Walt Disney, et al., comic book stuff, etc). As a result, I have a pretty conflicted view of the guy. I guess you could describe it as being akin to a "hate the sin, love the sinner" type situation.
