March 25, 2008 4:29pm
I'd totally love living in a renovated missile silo ... for a few weeks.
I'm sure it would get old pretty quickly.
The biggest con is the remoteness. I've lived in the suburbs, the city, and the sticks. Out of all three I prefer the city or the suburbs. Living in the sticks was a pain in the ass.
Now ... if I could convince the city to issue permits for me to excavate something like a missile silo, then we'd be talking. I'd totally spend the money on something like that.

Exclusive Gallery: Dungeons and Dragons 4.0's "D&D Insider" Screenshots
February 26, 2008 9:59am
I stopped playing "D&D" years ago in favor of a custom system designed by some buddies.
It takes all the best elements of all the gaming systems and wraps them up into one nicely packaged database.
Our last team was a Gnome, an alien from Dark City, a Kzin, and some other random races from books we'd read. Have a race that's not in the system, work up some reasonable stats and viola ... you're playing anything from a Wookie to a dragon rider from Eragon.
Real geeks roll their own.
LEGO Universe MMO Coming Along Nicely
February 22, 2008 9:25am
I had no idea this was in the works.
This beats ANY upcoming MMO hands down if they can do it well.
1. do quests to earn bricks or tokens to buy bricks
2. design and create your own cool toys in game
3. fab cool toys from game for purchase
4. profit!
I could see myself spending hours trying to finish that quest for that one piece I need for my robot/car/spaceship ... then spending hours crafting it ... then spending the cash to have it shipped to me for real.
I'm 40 and I still love legos (and I love a good MMO, so this could be dangerous)

We Lost. The Telcos Won.
February 12, 2008 2:11pm
I think George Bush said it best at Ground Zero when he dedicated the new freedom tower...
Six years ago patriots brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in security, and dedicated to the proposition that all are potential terrorists.
Now we are engaged in a great war on terror, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under GOD, shall have a new birth of security -- and that government over the people, by the corporate, for the money, shall not perish from the earth.

wow, too cool.
I had a lot of the sets he designed.
My kids still play with what's left of them when we are over at my folks house.
The one thing that really disappoints me with the current crop of Lego space sets are all of the custom parts that only have one or two uses. (I'm looking at you Bionicles :P )
I always liked the space sets that had the most general utility parts that could be used for lots of things.

Is Comcast really blocking P2P? EFF + SF Weekly conclude: yeah.
January 24, 2008 10:07am
I use encryption built in to micortorrent. I also only accept encrypted connections from others. Comcast doesn't need to know what my packets are.
I also cap my upload speed since Comcast has seen fit to make the upload speed an order of magnitude or more slower than download speed. If I don't, my connection becomes unusable due to BitTorrent hogging the bandwidth.
Lastly, I use Peer Guardian. This handy program keeps a blacklist synced with a main server out there. It blocks connections from known vigilante groups.
The Other Monstrous "Clover," a $20k Coffee Brewing Vacuum Siphon
January 23, 2008 4:39pm
@Dan Wineman, Thanks for the tips.
The vacuum pot I have is one of the manual glass ones.
I don't have a burr grinder. I'd love one but can't really justify the expense. I have a plain old blade grinder right now.
As to the coffee ... yes, the beans are crap and I'm just trying to make the best of a bad situation. It is old, stale, and wasn't really that good to begin with. I wouldn't serve it to guests, but it's not too bad for daily drinking. It's still beats the free office coffee. I'm just to cheap to throw it out. The salt was a trick I picked up in the Navy trying to stomach that stuff. The sugar I just add ahead of time because I know how much I like and it means I don't have to add it later.
With the process above I can definitely see how I'm over-extracting. All of this has pretty much been trial and error for me. I like to experiment to learn rather than reading up too much on a subject first.
I think I'll go home and try a lighter roast and a finer grind to see what the super awesome coffee bong can give me.
The Other Monstrous "Clover," a $20k Coffee Brewing Vacuum Siphon
January 23, 2008 10:48am
I've got a vacuum coffee pot that I call "the super awesome coffee bong".
I got it for my birthday about two years ago after expressing interest in it to my wife.
It turns out to make a surprisingly mediocre cup of coffee.
I've perfected my coffee making technique to give me exactly the pot of coffee I like.
1. Roast green coffee beans past second crack until they get a nice and dark oily sheen.
2. Let the beans rest for at least a day.
3. Add together one pot worth of beans, 2 Tbsp of sugar, and a pinch of salt.
4. Grind the dry mix to a fine powder
5. Combine mix and one pot of cold water in a large sauce pan.
6. Bring to a boil while stirring.
7. As soon as it boils, turn off the heat.
8. Let hot bean broth stand for 10 to 15 minutes.
9. Stir and pour through cone filter into coffee pot to remove grit.
Sometimes I skip step 9, but I've found I actually like not having the grit at the bottom of my cup.

15 Things I Just Learned About the Amazon Kindle
November 19, 2007 10:35am
This is yet another device not enough people will buy.
A reader needs to work with every file format out there.
It needs to support DRM for the file types that need it but be open enough to still accept file with no DRM.
Removable media, yes.
USB connectivity, sure, but you don't need it if you have removable media. If it brings down the price, leave it out.
Wireless? it's not really necessary. It's ok if it's not locked to any service provider.
Web browsing, no, it just jacks the price up.
Audio, no, it just jacks the price up.
For the people that want wireless, web and audio, make a separate model with the extras.
Just give me a $200 reader with good contrast and DPI that lets me read without getting a headache.

Surrounded by Bad, Broken Gadgets
September 26, 2007 10:28am
Boy ... I think I'm a record holder here.
A few years back I cleaned out two tons of used electronics from my garage. Stacks of old PCs that had been rendered obsolete, electronics waiting to be "salvaged" for parts. Stuff like that.
I decided that it had sat so long that I really wasn't going to use it as planned. So, I bit the bullet and hauled it all off to the dump. The only reason I know how much it weighed is that the dump charged by the pound.
The sad part is that I've still got about half a garage of crap still left to get rid of.
