@MDHATTER (#1455), regarding
"My idea: Each of you Boingers choose your 3* preferred commenters from this thread and ask them to be your ad-hoc sounding board on whatever changes you're considering."

Funnily enough, I was thinking about something along those lines last night. Not just as a response to this particular situation, but as a way to keep this kind of "meta-conversation" with our community going. Anyway, more grist for the mill. Thanks for bringing it up!

Andrew Brandou: new paintings

July 3, 2008 1:47pm

@Tiki (#1), Yes, absolutely. Andrew is an absolute master of color. We have a very large painting he did hanging in our dining room. The whole piece is marvelous, but the colors really bring the characters and scene to life.

That Violet Blue thing

July 3, 2008 6:31am

@Random832 (#1276), The unpublishing of the posts wasn't discussed among the group of us internally until a week ago.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 10:19pm

Oh, also regarding my comment #1215, I vaguely remember deleting a quick post about something when I was unaware that another one of us was working on a longer or more informed post on the same subject. So I might have taken down my post as a courtesy and to "make way" for the more thorough post. I can't think of any specific instances of that but it did pop into my mind just now.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 9:46pm

The only other posts that I personally know of that have been unpublished have been dupes, like when I post about something that, say, Mark blogged about two years (or two days) previously and I forgot about. I can't think of any others at all.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 9:03pm

Xeni, thanks for bringing up the question about what to do when people want to delete their profiles and/or specific comments. Folks, we've been trying to figure out the right thing to do with regard to that long before this situation. I appreciate any good suggestions or pointers to best practices in that regard. In fact, I think we might want to raise that in a separate thread later on too.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 6:20pm

@NelsonC (#1148), You're absolutely right. This is much to important to just whip out some random policy. We really want to think this through, individually and then as a group. Also, if you do have advice, please share. We're all ears. Thanks.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 5:49pm

Travis08 (#1139), You are indeed wrong. We've kept the number of posts on the front page to 30 for at least a year as best I can remember.

Phone booth with faux saloon doors

July 2, 2008 4:58pm

I thought of that too, Aviation! hahahah! Then I remembered I also saw one recently in Santa Monica. There was no phone inside though. Or rather, not an entire phone.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 4:45pm

@Joel (#1108), Let's just let the conversation continue and maybe some new insights and observations will emerge. Or the thread will implode and catapult us all into another dimension where Yetis reign supreme.

Seriosuly though, this is a lot to parse and we're just trying to keep up. As I said earlier, the comments here have had a big impact on me and also how I think about Boing Boing and its place in the world. The voices we've been hearing, both critics and supporters, have raised a lot of questions that all of us at BB have to think about very seriously. I personally don't have answers yet. But I promise that as soon as we make sense of this whole thing, we'll share what we've learned. Thanks.

Italians choosing pasta over pizza

July 2, 2008 3:12pm

That's interesting. I didn't know that about pennies.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 9:41am

@ShawnStruck (#861), Thanks so much. Policies like those are very new to us and we're definitely learning *a ton* about how to write a good, honest, and fair policy, how to update them, what's legal, what insurance companies stand firm on, etc. There was a great discussion about our policies when we posted the first rev and we will *absolutely* take into account what the community posted there (and here!) as we continue to revise them.

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 9:18am

It wasn't a change from a previous policy about unpublishing. There wasn't one stated. In fact, we didn't really have any policies posted at all until a few weeks ago. So as our policies evolve, we'll make that known. When we commented on this matter, we linked to the policy with the additional wording. But we'll try to be even more specific and clearer in the future with regard to changes. Thanks!

That Violet Blue thing

July 2, 2008 8:43am

@Joel (#815), Totally. It's been really hard reading a lot of this, but I'm learning a lot about what BB represents to many people and also how much our community really cares about this site and are invested in it. I appreciate that. The support, criticism, and yes, even the outrage, didn't fall on deaf ears. And I too feel differently about some things than before.

@BECW (#9), Thanks for that link!

That Violet Blue thing

July 1, 2008 3:59pm

@Alexreynolds (#496), I think Xeni removed that phrase because it sounded inflammatory and insulting in a way that she didn't intend.

Also, I ask that people please don't continue with the nasty names or post stupid, sophomoric insults. The moderators will do their best to remove or disemvowel those comments, whether they're about a Boing Boinger, Violet Blue, or anyone else.

July 1, 2008 12:03pm

As much as the whole situation is frustrating and upsetting, I am glad that we did comment and open it up to discussion on our own site.

@Teresa (#22), I think that Geekpdx (#15) was asking whether it was a group decision to unpublish the posts. @Geekpdx, the BB bloggers act autonomously with regard to editorial decisions.

@Grobstein (#7), I think you're right. It wasn't a big pact of secrecy though. We are geographically distributed and it was the weekend, so it took time to get everyone on the same page, up to date, and figure out the right thing to do.

June 11, 2008 9:32am

Children's flashcard: how to levitate

June 11, 2008 8:51am

@HUGEMONKEY (#5), That's a good question. When I was writing the post, that struck me as well. I always thought it referred to Native American, but why *couldn't* the name have come from the lotus position in Yoga!? I Googled around for a while and I couldn't find anything to back up the South Asian possibility though. Please let me know if you do!

CIA's Psychology of Intelligence Analysis book online

May 6, 2008 11:52am

@Thinkerer (#3), That does look like an interesting book. Thanks for the tip! At Institute for the Future, we try to distinguish between "problems" (that can be solved) and "dilemmas" (which have to be managed but can't be solved.) This notion definitely relates to the challenges of the intelligence community. More on that thought in this previous post.

Photo from the Paris Catacombs

May 6, 2008 10:59am

I loved visiting it too! I especially liked that it's not a "structured tour" or anything. All the bones are right there beside you and, when I went, there was almost nobody else inside so I really enjoyed the quiet of the rooms. Very creepy cool.

Umbrella massacre in Tokyo

April 30, 2008 12:54pm

Ha! It really made me recognize how umbrellas have become a disposable product (not necessarily a good thing). It seems kinda silly to buy a "quality" umbrella because you'd probably accidentally leave it somehwere. But the cheap street vendor umbrellas break too easily.

Wonderful DIY pipe organ

April 16, 2008 11:44am

@ChineseJetPilot (#1), I usually link to the BBG post rather than the external item because I think Joel, John, and Rob provide killer context, humor, analysis, etc. that readers will dig. That said, I agree in this case that it makes sense to also include a direct link to the YouTube video. So I added one. Thanks!

Children's book about plastic surgery

April 16, 2008 10:17am

I'd suggest that people read the book, which won't be out until next month, before getting too up-in-arms and start calling the doctor, organizing protests, etc. I'm not saying "My Beautiful Mommy" is not creepy, but it's always best to read a book before, er, reviewing it.

Liz McGrath's limited edition Saint Patrick's Day collectibles

February 23, 2008 7:00pm

@PIPENTA (#2), I agree with encouraging people to make stuff themselves. That said, Liz McGrath's large sculptures sell out for thousands of dollars before her gallery shows even open. For fans of her art who would like an original piece but can't afford those prices, these items are greatly appreciated.

World's smallest bodybuilder

February 13, 2008 9:45pm

@DCER (#23), The text that I wrote made no reference to dwarfs, "midgets," or body proportions. The language that you're referring to is a quotation from the article in The Telegraph.

If The Telegraph article is insulting to little people, I'm sure the editors of the newspaper would be interested in hearing that.

Boing Boing hoodie by GAMA-GO!

November 8, 2007 8:41am

I agree, Teresa. It's really hard to get across the richness of the design without actually touching it. And I absolutely agree that $120 for a basic screenprinted hoodie is insane. But this is *not* that. It's much closer to a lightweight jacket than a sweatshirt. The feel of the integrated embroidery, screenprinting, and appliqué can't be conveyed in photos so well, but there are some close-ups on the GAMA-GO site here and here. Just scroll over the little pictures to see the close-ups. Thanks!

I inserted the quotation marks around "prestigious" as a reference to Lethem's discussion of the "gentrification" of PKD and whether an LoA edition somehow makes him more "reputable" in the eyes of his detractors.

I used quotations around "genius" because the actual award is called a "MacArthur Fellowship" but it is commonly referred to as a "genius" grant or award, and usually with "genius" in quotes.

"Thank" you. ; )

Comix artists draw Bowie

September 18, 2007 7:28pm

OM, the drawing to the far left, by Adrian Tomine, is indeed Halloween Jack, but I do believe the drawing to the immediate left of the post, by Charles Burns, is Ziggy.

Edgeore, that is a *great* idea. You're totally right--it looks just like a controller. I think Electronic Arts should commission Loren Coleman to write a "Search for the Cryptids" vidgame and box it with this controller.

Antique ivory skull statuettes

Wow. If they were carved from fossilized mammoth ivory, that makes them even more incredible and curious!!!

Antique ivory skull statuettes

September 10, 2007 2:06pm

Those are interesting points, DSkwid and Dogu4. Honestly, I am a bit conflicted about it. My first thought (until I saw the prices) was, "I gotta have these!" But then I flashed on images of the killed and de-tusked animal. Still, I find the pieces to be quite magnificent. That's why I took the photos and posted them -- I appreciate the beauty and artistry even though I'm personally upset by the way in which the raw material was likely acquired.

I did grab a business card but unfortunately I misplaced it or lost it along the way. If I find it, I'll post the information. I couldn't even tell you the street name other than that it was between the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Métro stop and the Jardin du Luxembourg. Not a lot of help, I know. Sorry!! I do remember that the two statuettes were roughly 1500 Euros each.
