Modular sound flute for kids lets any sound be played as an instrument

July 4, 2008 11:57am

Melon Bread--

Perhaps you need to read my older blog entry "John Cage, a charlatan!?" which addresses your concern, more or less.

http://startlingmoniker.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/snfvsjc/

There is also a part two!

Giraffe-fight! video

September 27, 2007 5:36am

Too bad humans don't have to fight like that-- might slow down violence quite a bit!

Photo gallery of giant holes in the ground

September 24, 2007 10:17am

This looks an awful lot like the gallery of amazing holes I saw at Deputydog a couple weeks back. Also, the link you provide seems broken.

One Laptop Per Child machines for sale this Christmas: buy two, one goes to developing world

September 24, 2007 6:44am

Splash--

Doesn't make a lot of sense, really. These kids would have time to go to a library and read, but not read on a computer? Not sure I see the difference. Books have to be delivered to the area, and go out of date quickly. They're also not very interactive-- a computer might allow inquisitive children to write back, to question, or to find more information on a related topic. The laptop concept seems infinitely more flexible than any brick-and-mortar library besides! Not only can it possibly supply reading material, but current news, communication, and goodness knows what else-- anyone who has spent time at some of the links Boing Boing provides to 3rd world folks using technology in startling new ways won't be terribly surprised if many of these kids find amazing unknown uses for these machines.

One Laptop Per Child machines for sale this Christmas: buy two, one goes to developing world

I totally disagree with the resident naysayer on this topic. If you give a kid the opportunity to reach for something greater than where he/she is at, they'll take it. You're wrong to look at the laptop as the solution-- this is in the children themselves. The laptop is helping unlock this potential, something your narrowly-focused viewpoint doesn't seem to recognize.

Burqinis and the new Muslim chic

September 20, 2007 9:12am

I'm backing Cpt.Tim up on this one... he WAS edited by someone. His first post initially said something about women being beaten, or violence... can't recall the exact wording.

It's really not that complicated, Xeni. When one's choices are limited by the threat of violence, your choice isn't all that free.

Gives new meaning to the term "beach blanket"...

The View's flat earther blames "senior poopy moment"

September 19, 2007 9:39pm

I'm still a little stunned that she missed this simple fact-- globes aren't all that uncommon, and practically every news program uses some sort of globe graphic of the world... even the phrases "around the world" or "circle the globe" or "globe-trotting" give it away... Or hey, look at the crescent moon sometime! See that shadow?

Someone please poke a hole in this lady's box-- she might suffocate in there!

Home Inspection Nightmares VIII from This Old House

September 19, 2007 9:29am

Wish I had a photo of the guy who framed around some of the windows in my last house-- I guess nails were too simple-- he used roofing tar to slap 'em up! Really makes you wonder...

Co-host of The View doesn't know if Earth is round or flat (video)

September 19, 2007 9:11am

If anything, it's an incredible testimony to how sheltered this person's life must be-- I can't imagine how she could have failed to encounter this fact at numerous times in her life, without even trying. Another good reminder of the pointless programming available on television...

Sex Pistols return

September 18, 2007 6:51pm

I find their album as enjoyable as anyone, and it's no lie that I still dig listening to it every now and then... but I can't help but wish more kids could see a real punk band or two when they turn on their Wayback Machines-- CRASS would be my choice, rather than these know-nothings...

MySpace will target ads to users' personal data

September 18, 2007 2:47pm

I gotta admit, even on the rare occasion that I turn my AdBlock off, I don't even notice the ads. I think anyone who has used the web for a while develops serious blinders to anything resembling an ad. I can honestly say I have no idea what the last ad BoingBoing served me, let alone MySpace.

French art from 1910 depicting the year 2000

September 12, 2007 7:35am

The most interesting thing to me is how all the wiring for these devices is exposed. We do our best to hide it, but the mindset back then still saw it as super-interesting, I guess...

Artist will send 300 meter banana 50km above the earth

September 11, 2007 12:09pm

Wow. As if it wasn't hard enough to see the stars between city lights, pollution, and inclement weather-- now we have to contend with bananas. Thanks tons, Mr. Saez.

On the other hand, it will make it much more easy to convince chimps to go back into space....

Many scientists unhappy about Lucy tour

September 11, 2007 9:36am

I was half-expecting the furor to be over displaying Lucy without all her clothes on-- it IS the South, you know...

Prosthetic leg stash found under floor

Sounds like fodder for a steampunk walking machine to me...

Fake sunroof for car

September 10, 2007 12:24pm

At that price, they could have had a real sunroof.

William Gibson WashPo interview "one of the best ever"

September 6, 2007 7:14pm

Thank you! I'm so glad somebody has finally realized (and publicly said) what I've thought for some time-- the net trumps big cities. It's about time people took notice that you don't have to be in the city to find big city culture, knowledge, or expertise. Even more interesting will be the spin that rural areas will be able to put on things like the avant-garde, high fashion, and even activist roles that previously only played out in high-population areas.

Video of 1st radio control toy from 1950s

September 5, 2007 11:21am

Does it make anyone else giggle to watch how terribly careful he's being with the packaging? I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for him to drop some cardboard and freak out.

Miss S.C. Teen USA's geography pop quiz

You have to love how she even manages to bungle reading the cue-cards. "Marking it the largest... archipelagic country on Earth? Yeah."

What a dummy!

Not sure I care much for the re-design, honestly. Looks like a lot of wasted space on the right, even without AdBlock enabled.

Still, a comments section is nice. I imagine you had a lot of trouble with it before-- here's to hoping it works out this time around!
