Three-year-old boy has never slept; parents maintain 24-hour vigil

May 10, 2008 11:13am

First thing that popped into my head: "Can't sleep. Clown will eat me."

I remember reading a bit about long-term sleep-dep, and that after a week or so without sleep, you can expect permanent personality changes as a side effect. Never did find out what sort of changes were experienced though. Eventually you actually die from it, apparently.

The lack of death implies he's got a strong resistance to sleep dep effects, but you still have to assume he's never going to be normal, even if he does start sleeping.

Batman in Vietnamese

May 9, 2008 12:27pm

Insisible robin? Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of having him wear a brighly coloured suit so people will shoot at him instead of batman?

Electro-occular implants transform blind grandmas into NBA stars

May 5, 2008 7:47pm

It's a cyberpunk world, charlie brown.

Grand Theft Are You Fcking Kidding Me

April 30, 2008 6:10pm

@l'elk
That reminds me. Shouldn't the children all be destroyed by now?

Grand Theft Are You Fcking Kidding Me

April 30, 2008 5:00pm

I draw two main conclusions from various people's reaction to GTA...

1: People in general care more about the health and safety of CG prostitutes than the flesh-and-blood variety.
2: Killing men is perfectly ok.

7-year-old boy removed from father and placed in state custody over mistaken order of hard lemondade

April 29, 2008 6:38pm

So, we've got a guy who knows very little about alcholic drinks. He goes up to a counter and says "lemonade". The guy gives him a "hard lemonade" instead. Not being conversant with such things, he probably thinks "hard" is some branding gimick - like "classic" or "extreme". He then hands it to his kid. Hijinks ensue.

If you order an orange juice, do you expect to get a screwdriver? It looked like what he ordered. He probably never even looked at the label... why would he?

Honestly, the only real stupidity is that the guy at the counter didn't give him the right drink.

HOWTO start a flashmob

April 28, 2008 11:14pm

It's kind of sad when you get the same flashmob happening year after year. They're supposed to be surprises, not traditions.

NYPD cops videoed illegally warring on photographers

April 28, 2008 11:07pm

I am not picturing packs of exactly 49 people protesters operating at carefully selected intersections thoughout the city.

Actually, though, I'm curious... what exactly is the legality of performing a citizen's arrest on a police officer that is caught breaking the law?

Copyright crazies gaining steam in Canada

April 26, 2008 11:57am

McTeague's official e-mail address, taken from his website: dan@mcteague.ca

I just sent an email telling him to either do his research or stop lying, and stating that I'm voting NDP if this turns out to be Liberal policy. Everybody join in!
Heck, send CCs to any and all other liberal MPs while you're at it.

Who really gives a shit about MP3s killing the album?

April 25, 2008 3:05pm

Hmm. I'd never buy a screenless MP3 player. I like to be able to hear the song I want to hear, when I want to hear it.

That said... I've never in my life cared about albums. I count myself lucky if I find a group that has two or three songs I like all together, never mind on the same album.

How HAARP works

April 25, 2008 1:47pm

So... it's a space heater.

HOWTO kill/block an RFID

April 25, 2008 9:43am

To paraphrase a certain vampire killed: "You'd be surprised how many things you can kill by hitting with a hammer."

Five-toed athletic sandals for barefoot comfort

April 24, 2008 10:08am

The fact that there's stuff between the toes would probably drive me nuts... Otherwise cool.

11 students suspended for banana prank

April 23, 2008 8:54pm

Oh my god no. They disrupted class. In a highschool. It's not like anything important was going on anyways.

And they've really go to get over the idea that a suspension is a punishment.

Anti-teen noise-weapon comes to the USA

April 23, 2008 8:47pm

#8 - See, I think I would have just disassembled it in the middle of the night.

Appeals court reverses ruling: now border agents can search laptops without cause

April 22, 2008 10:22pm

Yet another reason to not enter the US.

I mean, it's one thing to go looking for physical objects, but looking through your files is insane. What the hell are they going to find? The formula for how to make cocain? A lot of porn? Maybe the TV series you plan to watch on your 15hr plane trip?

The entire concept is assinine.

Gun owners are the happiest people in the US

April 21, 2008 5:37pm

I tend to wonder how many non-gun owners out there are unhappy specifically because they are surrounded by people who choose to have a gun around. I know it would irritate the crap out of me.

Public relations-officer for Southern Illinois University College Republicans sends misogynistic hate mail and is forced to resign

April 18, 2008 6:43pm

"you cannot dispute science"

Not only is he misogynistic, he's one of those people who doesn't understand the entire concept of science.

They must have worked very hard to find somebody this inappropriate for the job.

Honor payment system problems at unmanned produce stands in Japan

April 15, 2008 3:45pm

I'm just intrigued at the idea of vegetables in vending machines...

MagicJack's EULA says it will spy on you and force you into arbitration

April 14, 2008 11:10am

I'm trying to imagine them trying to enforce their eula in court if it's not readily accessable to the user. I think most judges would smack them silly for trying to enforce a pseudo-contract that the user has never even seen.

US economy is in scary shape, no matter what Hank Paulson sez

April 12, 2008 11:21am

So, the official US government position is that if you're not working, and have given up on trying to find work, you are actually employed.

Is there any remotely rational reason to explain this?

Ludicrously expensive bottled water for rich morons

April 11, 2008 11:30am

I live in Vancouver, so buying water has always struck me as insane.

Though this stuff still has nothing on Noka.

Feds hand eight-count obscenity charge to porn producer

April 10, 2008 9:46pm

Hmm. It seems the community standards approach still applies.

So, if I was his lawyer, I'd start by pointing out how much money the porn industry generates. Then look at how much of the internet traffic is porn related.

The community at large consumes a tremendous amount of porn. They may not be willing to admit to it, but the fact that they do establishes a good basis for a defense.

Special license plates shield officials from traffic tickets

April 7, 2008 7:12pm

To those who thinks this isn't an issue...

They are effectively giving themselves rights that the people they work for (ie. the public) have not given them. It's sort of like saying "I work in a bank, so I can take home a few extra twenties".

It's not a "professional courtesy" - it's a bribe. It's basicly saying "don't turn me in when i break the law, and i'll do the same for you".

It may not be a big deal if you're talking one or two parking tickets - but when it's standard practice, then it most definately is corruption.

University prof says students can't sell notes from his classes because it violates his copyright

April 4, 2008 9:23pm

Unless the prof is making all of his stuff up whole-cloth, his own lecture would be a derivative work based on what others in his field have done.

Flintstones-style pedal car gets its day in court

April 3, 2008 11:54am

And yet, the people on normal bicycles are allowed to roam free.

Honestly, there's no way this thing is less safe then a normal bike.

Masters of Orion 3 made me want to shoot the people who made it...

Bell Canada caught throttling ISPs' net connections

March 26, 2008 10:33am

I've also heard that the CRTC is considering changing it's original stance and regulating the internet... Which is both laughable and scary at the same time.

Instant science-fiction convention finder, just add ZIP codes

March 26, 2008 10:32am

Doesn't seem to like canadian postal codes. It fails.

Comparing food products with their package photos

March 25, 2008 10:55am

Food photographers for ads and the like are legally obligated to only use the actual product, as it's bought in the store, for shots like these. They just get 100 cans of soup or whatever, and open them one after the other until they find a "perfect" one.

Air safety proposal: shock-bracelets controlled by flight attendants

March 20, 2008 6:56pm

Because there's been no recent contraversies surrounding taser usage in Canada...

Stingray strike results in sunbather's death

March 20, 2008 6:54pm

While I do feel sorry for her family and stuff... There's just something embarassing about being taken out by something that is generally entirely harmless.

Though not as embarassing as it is when you're a professional animal handler.

Fun sticker: "Toilet cameras are for research"

March 20, 2008 1:29am

"toilet cameras" sounds rather illegal to me actually.

Physics report-card for science fiction movies

March 15, 2008 2:17am

You know, it's wierd, but science stuff like this, I could care less about in a movie. Suspension of disbelief covers that.

What drives me up the wall is stuff like ID4 when some random guy with a bit of electronics knowledge manages to hook his Mac up to an alien spaceship in a few hours.

Crazy design of house sparks neighborhood protest

March 14, 2008 11:55am

Awsome! It's like something out of a miyazaki film!

Scientology strikes back at "Anonymous" via YouTube

March 14, 2008 11:14am

First thing the governments should do - require tax-exempt organizations, such as religious groups, to publicly reveal their entire financial situation, from the bottom up.

And I mean put them up on a website in a nice clear, easily-read format.

Vatican comes up with a new list of Seven Sins

March 10, 2008 9:35pm

I'm entirely in favor of #4-7. #3 depends on the definitions of the words "drug" and "abuse".

#1 - ok, now they're double-dipping. it's a sin to have sex for non-reproductive reasons AND to use birth control? two sins in one! (well, four, if you count that doctrine where you sin once by deciding to do something, then again by actually doing it...)

#2 - how on earth can it be a major sin to do something "morally dubious"? being morally dubious means the jury's still out on whether or not it's immoral.

Heathrow Terminal 5 to fingerprint domestic passengers

March 8, 2008 1:06am

So... terrorist buys his ticket. Walks up to first sensor. Gets scanned. Walks up to second sensor. Gets scanned. Walks onto plane. Blows it up shortly thereafter.

Not really seeing how this is supposed to stop a terrorist. I tend to credit terrorists with enough brains not to send the guy with the police record.

London cops declare war on photography

March 4, 2008 8:23pm

This sounds very much like a call to dress oddly and take pictures in london.

Video about quest to get Dalai Lama to carry Olympic torch

February 29, 2008 12:45pm

All question of olympic corruption aside... I have a very hard time imagining the chinese government going along with this plan, given their view of the man in question.

Loony evangelical claims credit for Canadian film tax-credit changes that will doom edgy indie movies

February 29, 2008 12:08pm

Why on earth would I want a bunch of bloody self-riteous moralistic jerks deciding what can and can't be funded? I can't imagine they'll have people like Cronenburg on the panel. I'd be willing to bet that 1: it would be some sort of secret panel and/or 2: their definition of "offensive" will be totally differant than most of the people I know.

We need more government funding non-mainstream products, not less. Too much mainstream schlock as it is.

Love: massively multiplayer world created by lone developer

February 26, 2008 11:40pm

My god... it's like gaming inside an impressionist painting... so very cool...

Unacceptable Causes of Death That Need to be Reported to the Coroner

February 25, 2008 2:45am

You know... cardiac arrest/failure always struck me as a bogus cause of death. As I understand it, clinically speaking death is defined, basicly as "your heart stoppping" - ie. cardiac arrest.

So, if you put "cardiac arrest" as the cause of death, you're basicly saying "the cause of death was death".

Personally, I don't consider somebody dead until the brain fails. Otherwise the guy I know who went under the ice as a kid and got his heart started 15 minutes later is either a zombie or the second coming. Maybe both.

Teen-repellent ultrasonic device violates kids' rights

February 22, 2008 2:52am

Ah, the UK. The place where they had a curfew in place for all kids, until a kid decided to break it intentionally and bring it before a human rights tribunal as age discrimination.

There's at least a decent chance mosquito will lose out.

Video: Tex Avery's Television of Tomorrow (1953)

February 21, 2008 10:49am

I actually remember this one from when i was a kid. Now that I think about it, there was an awfull lot of "home of tomorrow" type cartoons.

The horrors of plant-animal hybridization

Day of the triffids anyone?

Library built into a staircase

holy yomiko readman, batman!

Giant fossilized frog named after Satan

February 19, 2008 1:01pm

Originally, Beelzebub was just another god worshipped by semitic people. But his followers and Yahweh's apparently didn't get along, so he was demonized.

Medieval occult literature place Beelzebub in the upper ranks of the hierarchy of hell. Milton seems to have made him Satan's second in command.

Why Shouldn't Super Mario Bros. Become Japan's Nat'l Anthem?

February 18, 2008 3:51pm

I think theme music from a magical girl anime series would fit better, actually.

Eyeclops Bug Vac Makes Backyard Entomology Slightly Less Squicky

February 18, 2008 3:48pm

I remember catching bees and other attack-capable bugs by the dozen with nothing more than a jar with a lid...

I can see this being more usefull for those adults who, apon seeing a spider in the house yell for backup.

Spore release date announced: Sep 7, 2008.

February 12, 2008 12:01pm

Of course, this release date is actually just another delay.

Woman's dream of bomb results in oil rig evacuation

February 11, 2008 6:56pm

Something similar happened to me once. Waiting in line to see an action movie, talking about action movies and related things... somebody hears a few words and decides that me and my friends were armed and prepared to blow up the theater...

Paranoid twits who can't even be bothered to evesdrop properly need to be isolated from the rest of us.

Tripod-wielding photographer mistaken for would-be gunman

February 9, 2008 8:29pm

What the hell is up with them continuing to look for the guy, now that they've realized they realized it was a tripod?

MythBusters tackles "plane on a conveyor belt problem"

January 28, 2008 12:22pm

The treadmill thing means the plane isn't actually moving - just it's wheels are.

If it's not moving, then the air isn't moving accross it's wings.

No air moving accross the wings means there's no lift.

No lift = no flying.

I really don't see why this is so hard for people to understand.

Florida school board approves McDonald's report-cards and school-bus audio ads

January 19, 2008 11:45am

As much as I'd like to be upset at the thought of the schoolboard taking money from corporate interests and such... I'd be much more concerned about why the government that is supposed to fund public education has chosen not to do so.

Just take the money out of things like Homeland Security. Most of the money going there is being wasted anyways.

Wiretaps dropped after FBI doesn't pay bills

January 10, 2008 11:36am

Funding for wiretapping known/suspected criminals, which has a proven track record of success at securing arrests and convictions: No

Funding for wiretapping the entire population of the united states, and pretty much everyone who's phone traffic is routed through the US, in hopes that it may eventually become feasable to actually sort through all that data and make an arrest: Yes

Photo of extension cord in swimming pool

January 7, 2008 1:59pm

I hope this is fake - simply because I prefer not to be the same species as anyone that stupid.

On the other hand, if it's real, then the problem is likely to take care of itself.

Spoiled teenage pageant princess

January 6, 2008 11:56am

Congratualtions, you've raised your daughter to be an absolutely worthless human being.

Ok, not totally worthless. She might make a decent statue or something.

Seriously though, I sort of feel sorry for the kid when she encounters real life, never mind age. I see drug and alcohol problems in her future.

Suburban family discovers hidden room filled with toxic mold and a taunting note

January 6, 2008 11:30am

I noticed something that is likely to make this shot turn into tabloid fodder in any region that the original news article didn't get much publication...

There's a face in the wall.

German Justice Minister: ISPs must store data for terrorist-hunting, but not for music industry lawsuits

January 5, 2008 11:23am

Don't they always describe movie piracy and the like as being run by "organized crime"?

Hmm.

Park visitors required to sit up straight on benches in Orlando

January 4, 2008 11:57am

Yet another example of treating poor people as the problem, instead of treating poverty as a problem.

If you don't want homeless people sleeping on your benches, provide them with a superior alternative. Better yet, actually make a real effort to deal with the reasons why there are homeless people in the first place.

There aren't exactly a lot of people who choose that lifestyle freely.

Boom! comics' new series available as downloads on the same day as in stores

January 4, 2008 12:07am

There's also all those people who are unwilling to shell out money for things like comic books or movies that they haven't already seen and know they like.

Ok, that's obviously one of tolkein's ringwraiths.

Understanding the New TSA Ban on Spare Rechargeable Batteries (It's Not That Bad)

January 2, 2008 3:01pm

I'm still not buying this "they are safe enough to take on the plane when they are in the device, but dangerous when in your bag" argument.

Topless woman in park used as bait in police arrest

January 2, 2008 12:36pm

Sure sounds like entrapment to me. He only whipped it out when the bait (who was probably a wired officer) directly requested he do so.

Seems sort of like having a narc go around recruiting people to sell drugs and then arresting them when they do so.

TSA to punish fliers for facecrime

January 1, 2008 11:42pm

So... you ever get the feeling that the Department of Homeland Insecurity just makes stuff up as they go along?

TSA's new forbidden item: >2 gm lithium batteries

December 28, 2007 12:43pm

Interesting... the limitations are not based on the weight of the battery, but on the lithium inside the battery. I rather doubt they are going to have a comprehensive list of the batteries and their lithium contents at the security checkpoints, making that sort of a pointless distinction to make.

But the part I really like is where larger sized lithium ion batteries are disallowed in carry-on, unless they happen to be installed in a device. Apparently they are dangerous in your bag, but perfectly safe in your camera or laptop.

So, apparently, taking the batteries out of your camera in-flight will now make you a terrorist.

Egypt plans to "copyright antiquities" such as Sphinx, Pyramids

December 26, 2007 1:49am

In other news, I'm copywriting the complete works of William Shakespeare effective immediately. Start sending me money.

China to Tibetan Buddhist monks: no reincarnating without our ok

December 24, 2007 3:11pm

Apparently everybody else can still reincarnate freely...

Though basicly they're just putting a legal pretext in place to arrest anyone who claims to be a reincarnated monk.

FBI to create vast biometrics database

George W. Bush sings REM

December 22, 2007 1:20am

Hmm. I hadn't even realized that the Great Big Sea version of the song was an REM cover.

I shall stick to GBS.

Arnold's Fables: What Koko Wants

December 22, 2007 1:13am

Well, Koko certainly can't be doing any harassment - that would require her to be recognized as a person in the law. Inspite of being able to speak via sign language, I doubt that's going to happen any time soon.

The keeper suggesting Kendra do it could possibly be hit for it though. Strange that this isn't on the option list.

Sure is a bloody wierd example to use though. I mean, what percentage of the workforce is going to be in a remotely similar situation?

Fake news from the RIAA

December 21, 2007 10:19am

Ok, presuming that this is real...

I love the way the RIAA uses the term "organized crime" to describe the people who make the fake CDs. Makes it sound like the Mafia and it's ilk are involved.

"Music compilations that would only exist in the minds of fans" - So, basicly, the pirates know what you want better than the companies do.

"pirated products often look amateurish" - most of the ones i've seen looked exactly like the originals. most of the pirated products that i've seen that had amateurish packaging were toys.

"odd locations" - because nobody has ever bought an lot of product from a business closure and sold them at a flea market.

"The audio quality on pirate cds is usually atrocious" - oh, really? digital copying. I kind of doubt that most of the pirates are intentionally dropping audio quality when that would actually require more work on their part.
