Official anti-terrorism civilian snoop program to be expanded
July 1, 2008 9:47am
If Barney Fife were alive today, he'd be a high-ranking counterterrorism official, and he'd have the high-tech equivalent of the Mayberry jail filled up with 'terrorists' like Otis the Drunk, Goober and Floyd the Barber.

#10, it's already been done--why do you think that the Republicans are having their convention there this summer? I'm sure many of them are bummed that the stall is no longer operative.
If anyone cares to check, the Village Voice ran an article during the RNC convention in NYC in 2004, where they surveyed sex workers and found the general perception among them is that the Republicans tend to be more into freaky sex than their Democrat counterparts--go figure!

Vatican comes up with a new list of Seven Sins
March 10, 2008 6:54pm
So, according to this list, there is nothing wrong with buggery of children and conspiracies to cover up crimes?
They also left off another one of their favorites--thou shalt not have a relationship with God that is unmediated by Us.
It reminds me once again why I left these bastards for good, as soon as I was grown up enough to see the difference...
Cal State University fires Quaker for inserting "nonviolently" into loyalty oath
March 3, 2008 3:35pm
They should add an amendment to this oath mandating that employees wear a flag pin at all times.
Apparently, this is a crucial matter, according to the Republicans.

People, this is the US Military Industrial Complex reinventing itself. Space warfare has an advantage over terrestrial war, at least for the MIC--it's much more expensive, *and* the threats coming from space are potentially much more serious then even Communism or Al Qaida!
It's no coincidence that the Air Force has a larger space budget than NASA (or so i'm told, from the latest recruiting commercials)

Objectivism in Bioshock
February 15, 2008 8:20pm
Objectivism was the personal reaction of Rand upon coming to America from Russia (becoming a screenwriter, no less). Like Communism, and now Capitalism, it started as a utopian ideal, then devolved into corruption and a Cult of Personality, as Rand seduced a married follower, then made all sorts of rationale for it.
At its theoretical best, it is incidental altruism; in practice, it leads to things like Enron and the Iraq war, both of which were fought over John Galt's sign--$.

Unboxing an Apple IIc
February 4, 2008 6:47pm
This was my first computer as well--I always thought the IIc was one of the most elegantly designed computers, and very portable; the recessed handle was a great design touch, and the IIc was much more luggable than an IBM AT!
Regarding floppies, I remember many hours of swapping disks in and out to play Castle Wolfenstein;>
Analyzing Bush based on his favorite painting
February 1, 2008 10:19am
There is nothing wrong with having one's own interpretation of a painting--however, when that interpretation is at odds with the known background of a work, then it becomes groundless (faith-based art appreciation?)
For a more direct example, anybody can look at The Death of A. Marat and make up their own interpretation; however, to say that the dead figure in the bathtub is a "beautiful figure who has died peacefully while in the bath" would be a gross misstatement, at odds with history.
Personally, I go for meta-analysis; I think that Bush sees himself as the 'determined horseman,' while the rest of us see him as a horse thief;>

In Defense of Food: NPR interview with Michael Pollan about "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."
January 15, 2008 1:57pm
I'll be picking up this book, and would also like to recommend another on the same subject, What to Eat by Marion Nestle.
While at first I thought it would be a simple run through the food groups, her take is much more comprehensive, delving into the politics of commodity food growers and the logic of the typical supermarket setup. Fascinating stuff!

Meraki free mesh WiFi network spreading across San Francisco
January 11, 2008 1:52pm
rtfl, John G X, the project started in the Mission. All that's needed for coverage in the Tenderloin and Hunters Point is for people to host the mesh repeaters, so it's a great opportunity for you to get out and do some 'neighborhood outreach' if you feel so strongly about it.

Understanding the New TSA Ban on Spare Rechargeable Batteries (It's Not That Bad)
January 2, 2008 11:23am
This answers a 'wtf?' moment that I had over the holidays--I had flown domestically for business in October, and in packing for a trip after Christmas, I looked in my shaving kit, and found that the battery had been removed from my mini travel alarm.
Is this really an urgent issue, or is the TSA just gilding its own lilly? Personally, I think Bruce Schneier is right!
Slate's Jack Shafer on Rolling Stone drug war article
December 6, 2007 12:56pm
It's a good article, but the subject is simply too large to be taken on fully in an article, and there are large gaps in the narrative.
First, the WoD started with good old Harry Ainslinger, and the 'Reefer Madness' crowd; of course, we all know now that the rationale was really racially and profit driven.
Also, like the 'War on Terra,' the 'War on Drugs' itself is a contradiction in terms--we would be equally (in)effective starting a 'War on the Common Cold.'
As Sonny notes above, there is no mention of the cocaine trafficking element of the Iran-Contra scandal, where US govt officials were trafficking cocaine for arms, and which said cocaine ended up on the streets of US cities.
The military aspect is mentioned, and it should come as no surprise that ulterior motives came into play as to the armament and deployment of US troops throughout Central and South America; whatever good they have done has been more than offset by the (real) perception that these forces are very similar to the forces used by MNCs and right-wing dictatorships to prop up their business initiatives.
Also missing is the current explosion of poppy harvesting and heroin production in Afghanistan, which is either a direct failure of the current WoD, or else a secret directive that is allowing somebody to reap these massive profits.
Finally, the explosion of 'legal' drug marketing by Big Pharma was largely given a pass, via an anecdote that suggests they were a problem in the past, but somehow today are not. Check the stats, and you'll see that prescription use of painkillers, antidepressants and sleep aids (not to mention 'restless leg syndrome') are all on the upswing. And, if you pay attention to the legal disclaimers, these drugs have many more potential side effects than good old cannabis sativa.
The bottom line is that the 'War on Drugs' is an abject failure in its stated purpose, but again, like the 'War on Terror' it has deeper, hidden purposes that have little to do with People, and everything to do with Power, and the cartels are small beer compared to the Politicians that are benefitting from both sides of this phony 'war.'
