Man loses money trying to double it by marinating

May 15, 2008 4:40pm

While the story reeks or urban legend, particularly due to the lack of concrete details. Then again, there was this 419 scam in which currency had been rendered worthless because it was blackened. The 419'ers could, of course for a price, get a special solution to remove only the black dye. The scam involved you receiving the "money" and then you "helping them purchase" the solution. It is completely implausible (and used black paper). Somehow people fell for it. This story of "a magical marinade" is just as far out there... which only tells me that someone HAD TO fall for it!

Thank you... I laughed out loud - I certainly didn't go to the more logical place #15 JAUTERO went to.

Belt Buckle Knives

January 14, 2008 9:00pm

Wow... ok.. so this is a bit goofy. Part of it is the concept (big hunk-o-metal buckles?!) and part of it is the schlocky website. Methinks their advertisement budget should be concentrated at gun shows. Then again I am in Texas, and I do carry a (small, discrete) pocket knife. If it were better executed... Ok.. probably not. How about it if were flat and fit on the back on your mp3 player ;)

Odd new product -- creme-filled bananas

ADMMETAL - I thought of the cheese-filled hotdogs - but yes, I too need one of these! (not that I condone cheese-filled hotdogs - they're an abomination)

Lagos: fastest-growing city in the world

December 10, 2007 10:30pm

Even after having lived in a rapidly growing 3rd world city, I can't imagine the planning nightmares of a city that big growing that fast. How do you keep up with roads, sewer, water, electricity, schools? The answer is.. you don't. I'm a city planner. Many will argue that the self-created capital of the shanty-towns which eventually become part of the city are a good thing. I see a lack of open space and planning in these areas as creating a place which will be marginal for many many years. There are no easy answers, but the video sheds a great light on areas many turn a blind eye to.

Miro 1.0: the free and open future of video on the net

November 13, 2007 9:43pm

Downloading the new version as I type. Feeling the love for Miro. No odd Joost interface, no DRM, make-your-own RSS chanels... what is not to love. I agree that the beta is a resource hog... hopefully lighter in 1.0x
Adam C - there is a LOT of content out there... I don't think you are getting the most out of the program's capabilities.

Housing development design keeps drinkers out of cars

September 4, 2007 9:28am

I am an urban planner. I am glad this story made it to BoingBoing - not only because of my profession (passion) and that I like to have a beer (or two) but because a lot of people I know grew up in the burbs. Yes, they had sidewalks, but they had no place to walk to! They had those useless 2-foot porches. There are a lot of new urbanist developments popping up, and judging by the prices, people are willing to pay for community. Prices will come down as more people realize - not being isolated is great way to live!

Video compilation of television logo signoffs

August 29, 2007 8:20am

Wow - what i am amazed at is how many of these logos I remember and strike some sort of emotional/nostaligic response. How is it that I remember after so many years? Seems the sort of throw-away info our brains would have dumped long ago! I must have watched a LOT of TV as a kid!
Oh, and the WGBH meant NOVA - I could stay up to watch it or go to bed... um... a "no brainer" ;)

Welcome to the new Boing Boing!

OMG - comments! - I haven't read a single post denouncing them. That is because this is a wonderful thing.
I am not enamored with the new layout (too spread out, not enough on the page) but if it is the cost of comments, so be it.
