Anti-suicide barriers on Japanese train lines
September 25, 2008 9:12pm
If those are "5-foot walls," then a couple of those Japanese people are over 7 feet tall. Yikes.
Immortal McHorror burger is 12 years old, looks just like new
September 25, 2008 9:09pm
I simply don't believe this story. Bread molds after a while. Meat deterioriates, unless it's jerkied and sealed. The "1996" hamburger, presumably, is exposed to light and open air all day (I'm assuming it's displayed in a classroom environment.) Somebody has an agenda here, and the story smells worse than a rotting hamburger.
Electronic cigarettes to circumvent smoking ban
September 25, 2008 10:53am
It appears that in the world of tomorrow, all vices will be replaced with an electronic equivalent. My first request: E-HotFudgeSundaes.
Styrofoam model of Concorde engine

Looks like a space habitat module, or a Klingon laser cannon or something. Cool!
Arctic sea "foaming" with methane?
September 24, 2008 10:04pm
So... am I to understand that NATURE'S doing this to us? Ahh. "Massive amounts of greenhouse gas," you say. I see. Well, is it again OK for me to rumble around town in my SUV without people calling me an eco-terrorist, seeing as how I and my vehicle had nothing to do with methane-burping ocean floor dynamics, nor sunspots, nor any other natural phenomenon that actually might be causing global warming? Can I at least have some fun while the oceans slowly rise over my front lawn, since there's not a diddly-damn any of us can do about it?
U.S. Army releases doctored photographs
September 23, 2008 9:39pm
#46, do you even read the other comments and resonable explanations (like #19 and #34), or do you just go through life looking for chances to whine about things you don't understand? As a former member of the military (13+ years), this Photoshop incident doesn't bother me one bit, and wouldn't have bothered me a bit if had been my photo. It's simple, really. An outdated uniform would have looked odd, so the Army personnel office just whipped up a reasonable (if not skilled) facsimile. They didn't do it to be disrespectful to one of their own -- in fact, they were trying to show some respect! So relax.
Woman sues city after it orders her to remove a link to the local cops' website
September 17, 2008 9:26am
I just added a link to the site in question, http://www.sheboyganpolice.com/ to my blog. You never know when you're gonna have to contact the police. BTW, here's a great blog about the whole issue, with lots of contact information for the knuckleheads that caused it: http://badgerblogger.com/?p=6120

Millimeter wave scan machine at Denver Airport
August 31, 2008 1:34pm
At least the scanner operator doesn't have one hand in his lap in the photo... that would be creepy.
New Orleans mayor: "We really don't have the resources to rescue you after this."
August 31, 2008 10:38am
From Hurricane Katrina, I learned that it's senseless to ask the question, "When will people start taking responsibility for their own lives?" It's clear that a certain percentage never will, probably because they simply never learned how. I think it's one of the most overlooked life-skills, and should be taught in school along with algebra and English.
We'd have a lot fewer "victims" in the world.
There are hundreds of thousands of future "victims" sitting in New Orleans right now, preparing to start yelling for rescue, food and free housing just as soon as the wind dies down and the National Guard helicopters start flying. They're making their protest signs right now: "It's Bush's fault. Again."
How many times do you have to be voluntarily flogged before you remove your shackles and walk away?
How much blame can you put on others without seeing there truly is no one to blame?
How stupid do you have to be before the universe notices, and tries to eradicate you?

Obligatory cute animal video to close out the week
July 19, 2008 9:11pm
Does anyone remember the "Gremlins" movie? Cute little buggers -- right up to the point where they eat your face. I think we have a new contender for the role. Yikes.
Man makes cell-phone activated stun gun to punish bike thieves
July 16, 2008 10:14am
I have a great deal of respect for the opinions of a shirtless dude who repeatedly show me his armpits, dorks up his live demonstration and leaves the screwup in his final video, doesn't properly light the scene so I can see what the heck he's talking about, and promotes a product that could *kill* someone because they stole my stupid bike. Another great contribution to the world by the YouTube generation!
Post-apocalypse without the militias: The Outquisition
July 13, 2008 8:25pm
I have a tractor, a gun, and lots of porn. I think I'll be OK after the societal apocalypse to come. Just gotta stock up on beer.

Uh, no, it's an incredibly high price to pay for potentially ruining one's computer and getting chalk dust all over everything. Sometimes, merging high- and low-tech is art. Sometimes it's just stupid and weird.

Only two movies ever made my list:
1. "Fire In the Sky: The Travis Walton Story" (1993) gave me the serious creeps for years.
2. "The Changeling" (1980): I don't think I have slept entirely peacefully since I saw this when I was 15.
