Terrible new Brazilian Internet law proposal will criminalize brazillions of people

July 9, 2008 1:02pm

@ Error404: USAsians? (I read US Asians.) I think the best (albeit silly) term is United States-ers, or just call 'em gringos, that always works and never pisses anyone off.

On topic, this law is way too vague to be enforceable, even if most officials in Brazil were honest (most of the ones I have dealt with are not).

Dumb-ass anti-terrorism ideas -- patented!

June 30, 2008 2:20pm

@16 Yes there is a very strict set of standards for patent application drawings. And that is exactly why they all seem to be so similar.

Here's a novel idea. Set up a dummy cockpit that looks just like the real thing. When the hijackers try to take out the captain and co-pilot they become sealed in the fake flight deck.

Throw in glue and/or other hilarious props plus a camera and have real entertainment for the passengers instead of cheap b-movies.

And what the hell is up with the "air mixing unit" on the outside of the freakin' plane. Seems they are just piling bad design upon bad design with this one.

What won't the Japanese sell out of vending machines? Also I could be wrong but I find it hard to believe that there is such a thing as "Big Japanese Tobacco". I would think that most of it is imported and furthermore, imported from the US.

History Channel on Bilderberg Group

June 9, 2008 12:29am

@8: The first half of "Endgame" is actually fairly good and interesting. But towards the middle to end Alex Jones goes for the Art Bell fanboy of the year award. In other words it gets a little ridiculous and implausible. Though if he is right we are all screwed, no matter where you happen to live.

@19: Good question. The fact that this sort of thing was aired on the history channel just proves to me that the Bilderberg's are basically defunct and is now probably just a ruse to draw attention away from the real secret cabal of power-people.

@ 20: Ron Paul, fascist/white supremacist? I would like more info on that assertion as it is not really that obvious to me.

Whatever the case with this group and their plans, I think Adam Smith put it best when he said "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary." In easy to chew terms "when you see two business people conversing, chances are they are engaging in a conspiracy against the people."

@Tak 18: Win. 33: Fail. (what office weine OWNS a gun let alone brings one to the office? Not only that I would bet that the guy that loses it would be the exception to that rule, not the scared shitless co-weines.)

@ 45 and other CRT commenters: First off, the phone-cam audio is clearly Russian (or dialect of former satellite countries), and this is probably not even a fortune 100,000 firm. Given that, they don't have money to throw away on new LCDs. Or the stagers of this went with the cheap route and decided to destroy half a dozen CRTs. Side note, I only see one LCD, maybe. Though that one does seem to come out unscathed. Coincidence or staging?
Plus...
@ 59: "only top-dollar CRTs would have screw-in VGA cables. LCDs come with screw-in VGA cables, not most CRTs." Um, dude have you ever seen a CRT? Every, and I mean EVERY, CRT I have ever owned had screw in cables. There are standards for a reason Grvrt, not to be mean but that was possibly one of the dumbest assertions I have ever heard. EVER! However, one of my oldest CRTs has a hard wired power cord, which is probably 20+ years old at this point. And I also agree that in cubicle-land none of them would be screwed in anyway. Also at 0:057 he struggles a little with the CRT, after beating the hell out of it. Cables, weight or acting?

@ Viral video theorists: The proof will be forthcoming, in the form of some actual company/product being linked to the footage. If there is no advertising advantage being linked to this spectacle then what was the point. Unless some creative troupe of wrestler/comedians staged this for some other reason.

@67: What blinds?

@83 and other video in video comments: What makes you think that that is the scene being played on that monitor. And for grins, what do you think the point of that would be? So that one guy could watch it while it was going on in front of him? What is he, the director of this "farce"?

@91: The break seems natural to me, continuity wise. The flicker itself is a little suspect but the footage doesn't seem to reveal any flaws that can't be explained. 1. I don't really see any difference on his desk, something odd appears on the floor in front of his desk and to the side of the cubicle he is kicking, but in the second or so that the film skips anything could have fallen there. 2. Are the papers on the floor moving or is that just the glitchy film, I really can't tell. 3. "Erects himself a bit?" If by that you mean it comes back up because it is wedged between two desk then sure but that doesn't mean there was a stage reset. In fact if that was a stage reset it was a very damn good one.

Thank the maker I can finally stop reading/watching this one. For now..

@84: The screwy thing I notice is that the very obese (or getting there) will order a big mac with the super-size fries and a dIET cOKE. If you are on a "diet" order the diet big mac, in other words don't order one at all. Get a fucking salad idiot!

Well Bucky certainly produced a lot of things, most with practical value. The problem he was plagued with as it seems to me is that most people thought his ideas were too unorthodox, too far ahead of their time. Also his earth friendly attitude wasn't such a huge concern to a lot of his contemporaries. At least not as much as it would be today. Too bad he missed by a few decades.

Very first phone book up for auction

June 1, 2008 12:52am

A few things here. First off, no Spanish/Castellano speaker I know says "bueno" to answer the phone. It's either "Quien es?", "Quien con hablo?" or "hola" (and sometimes "si?")(your mileage may vary as Mexico is a place I have not been to.) Also, it would seem to me that the term would be "Buenas" but that might just be that trip to Nicaragua talking. For giggles folks in Brasil answer the phone with "oi", "fala" and "ola". And Russians answer with "allo?" Secondly, "What's unusual about `hello' in the United States is that words that are used in other countries for greetings on the telephone--like in Italy, `Pronto,' or in Japan, (Japanese expression)--never move to everyday
speech, person to person." It seems to me that this guy is an idiot or at least under informed. "Pronto" in Italian is a very common word that means "ready" in this case more like a question but still it is used for more than just phone greetings. Don't know where "moshi moshi" came from but I do agree that it would have been easily rendered in romanji. Still on this tangent, "moshi moshi" seems more often than not to be spoken as "mosh- moshi". Well that's my two and a half cents on this topic. BTW, where can I get some Phrack from the 1800's?

Yes, the whole point of having children is to somehow exact some form of revenge for how fucked up your own childhood was. Awesome. Though in all seriousness that is probably exactly what we will do to the next generation. On a side note, a few reasons a person would want to speed up their voice in Internet videos; to save time, to disguise the voice and also because the mind can generally comprehend just as well if not better with a faster data/word rate. Plus slowing it down would make you sound like an idiot.

Also, the Seattle was a little off if there is one at all. Better still she should have (if possible) done South Chicago, Boston, and true Midwestern (which I am close to believing is the closest to non-accented Enlgish to be found in the states, and possibly the world. Her "Sydney" was spot on though.

Drug dealer vintage tax stamp

April 16, 2008 3:39pm

"Seriously - does anyone know if it is legal to actually buy those current tax stamps for weed, etc?"

Interesting question. I would have to say that yes it is legal to buy the stamps (if you meet the requirements, in some cases you need to present the actual contraband to obtain the stamp, and that is the horrible catch-22 of it really, since you need to commit a crime to even attempt to comply with the rest of the law). Further, I don't think they still issue these types of stamps as the controlled substances act supersedes them and forces a different sort of compliance licensing (for research). A friend of mine has an old marihuana tax stamp from Illinois but it is from the sixties I think, possibly older. Really this was just the governments first crack at drug-interdiction with the added benefit of slapping tax evasion on every drug bust. Though owning vintage stamps like this one should still be perfectly legal.

None of this aid seems to make the situations in these countries better, in fact things seem to only get worse.

US economy is in scary shape, no matter what Hank Paulson sez

April 13, 2008 9:34pm

@ 44 a quick and dirty retort, hopefully more quick than dirty...

Capitalist Island theme park: Come for overpriced, poorly made hot-dogs and cheap beer, to aide the digestion of course. Seriously though, sure have your little island paradise, I don't really think anybody that thinks the way I do about the theory of economy would object, especially since they could return at any time to a system that made sense and respected all people and their ability to contribute to society according to simple free association. And no the capitalist would not be forced into the system, hopefully they would come to recognize the benefits of this system by themselves. Also I respect your point about a ParEcon subset being able to exist with in capitalism, this is logically how it would be started and grown anyway. Capitalism would in my perfect world just fade away but much like capitalism coexisting with communism in the past I don't see much of a problem there, as long as the capitalists played with their own toys. Though that would almost seem like to much to ask of folks that think "free-market" is whatever they can get their hands on. I will also have to disagree with you on the fairness of capitalism since it's only goal is to generate wealth in complete disregard of things like human rights and environmental protection. As we have seen with bad lending/borrowing practices.

Yes wages are a fiction. Barter is not since it is trade in real goods. Money is a consensual agreement of worth that acts as a place-holder for real goods. Therefore it is not entirely needed for a functioning economy, handy but not necessary. And certainly one could acquire more goods than they personally needed, this is not strictly forbidden under ParEcon but acquiring and holding/trading in more would be unnecessary and counterintuitive to the system. That is one main problem with capitalism, overproduction that leads to overconsumption. The idea of ParEcon is to balance production and consumption for the overall benefit of those participating. Making too much would just be waste and therefore the organizations would try to diminish that tendency. Any overage would be virtually worthless and so would it's collection. Plus there would be no need to resort of violence as all of the participants needs and wants would be met efficiently. In theory of course.

I disagree, the labor is the product. Without effort to produce goods nothing but what one person can make is made. In an economy at that scale technology would be impossible or at least highly infeasible and the only goods that would be produced would be simple tools for personal use. Neo-primitivism isn't such an appealing option for a society at our stage of development. Though it does appeal to some. But then again so does Jainism. I also find it abhorrent personally that we "need" bosses. Organization yes, but autocratic direction not so much.

A billion dollars? Sure, you can have the near worthless paper. Make art with it, wipe your ass with it, just do something valuable with it. And certainly if you can convince me and everybody else that is a good idea go for it. Authority must be made to justify itself at every step of the way, transparently and convincingly. It's only fair after all.

Ascetics, invalids, slackers? Well that is a sticky wicket, sort of. Ascetics would get by on scraps and alms like they do now, maybe. Invalids would probably be accommodated in some fair and acceptable fashion, and not just through charity, after all everybody can contribute something. Slackers, I agree should not be given aid. The able that refuse to help would be pariahs in such a society. Maybe we could sell them to the operators of Capitalist Island as slaves. Just kidding.

Unfortunately, your last point is haltingly true of some people. That's what we call pretension or perhaps arrogance. Though I think you are missing a key point, ParEcon is not a straight Marxist "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need". It's geared for efficiency and mutual aid. But there is clearly a system of merit that can be incorporated into the production organizations. There would be no reason to use the force of government either, logically the government would have to be as close to true democracy as possible and therefore there would be no need for coercion or situations of duress. I would agree with you totally to justify action against an autocratic organization that tried to suborn either of our natural rights.

@45

It's not really Marxism, but I already said that. As for competition, yes that does play a large part in human interaction and that is also a part of ParEcon, in order to breed efficiency and motivation. However, mutual aid also plays a large role in our "nature" and in ParEcon. You can indeed have it both ways.

Anyway, that was a lot longer than I expected it to be. I'll stop beating the ParEcon drum for now.

To bring it full circle I am personally going to spend my whopping chunk of government cheese on more fair-trade organic Peruvian coffee and a bamboo-bike complete with banana-seat. Economic stimulus here we come.

Pro-Tibet protesters scale Golden Gate Bridge in SF

April 13, 2008 7:05pm

True democracy and true communism don't really exist as far as I am concerned, in real terms anyway. Academically sure, but one would be hard pressed to cite an actual example in the world today. The US is a Republic (possibly defined, loosely, as a representative democracy). More precisely, I would list the actual system as oligarchy/plutocracy (or one of my favorite terms kakistocracy, rule by the worst possible people), oddly the PRC looks much the same in real terms; the principle difference being that the rights of US citizens are ostensibly protected by the Constitution but who knows how much longer that will last with the way things are going...

"...as pursuing an aggressive policy of systematic destruction of a culture and people with the specific intent of seizing their lands and resources for immediate gain."

Good point. You can swap out Chinese Govt/PRC with US Govt for haunting effect. Maybe this is why the US doesn't really concern itself with pesky issues such as human rights and social justice. Just sprinkle sugar on the dog-shit and so on and so forth.

Pro-Tibet protesters scale Golden Gate Bridge in SF

April 13, 2008 5:22pm

I'll bite.

PRC = Venal government bent on keeping its power intact. Seemingly through any means possible.

Chinese = A diverse group of humans with different interests, cultural heritage, variated yet mutually intelligible language and not necessarily located in "China". (Taiwan would be a good example, one that may complicate things significantly.)

China = A physical set of borders controlled by the PRC and mainly populated by "Chinese" people and others (Tibetans, Mongols, etc.)

Tibet = Contested area claimed by opposing factions.

As is the case with any geopolitical dispute (Israel/Palestine, Kashmir/Pakistan/India, Colombia/FARC-EP, Taiwan/China, etc) there are a myriad of factors. In most cases the disputes are long standing, emotional, and unclear. They can involve religious conviction, national pride, linguistic homogeneity, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. The main problem with all of these disputes is that neither side wants to give up or lose face and their attachment to their cause verges on the fanatical. Fanaticism is the biggest roadblock to real dialog and the possibility of a negotiated and rational settlement of the issue.

In this particular case the PRC and the exiled leadership/people of Tibet are fighting each other for slightly different reasons. The PRC sees this as an assault on their borders and control. The Tibetans see this as a assault on their cultural heritage and national sovereignty. This far into the conflict both parties are right and wrong, not to be vague but the issue is cloudy. So from the outside it is hard to definitively say who is right. What I can say is that fighting over it is not going to help anybody. After all war doesn't prove who is right, it just proves who is dead. Originally the UN was asked to intervene and for some reason did not. So it would seem that the rest of the world tacitly agrees with the PRC, in a legal sense. The people of the world are as always a different story and harbor many differing opinions on this and other issues.

Just my two and a half cents.

US economy is in scary shape, no matter what Hank Paulson sez

April 13, 2008 3:40pm

"It is not necessarily the holder of the wealth, but it should be. But if I understand your point, you're saying that no one should not have to work hard perpetually to have great wealth."

No, I believe you have missed my point. I personally don't think anybody should have "great wealth", and at the same time I am not saying that one should not be fairly remunerated for hard work. Basically what I am saying is that everybody should be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor or creativity up to the point that those rewards do not create a gross imbalance of power over other people.

"The economic one is that it limits capital movement. When we say that the money does the work, we mean it serves as capital for other people. If I have to keep working, I will keep all my capital to help me with that work."

Capital is in itself a legal fiction. The only true force of work is labor. When a person works to add value to some process the typical way to rate that is by attaching a dollar amount to it either in the form of wages or profit. The current capitalist system allows a huge gulf between wages and profits, one going to the laborer and the other going to the moneyed interest (shareholders/corporations). This system is basically unfair and unnecessary. You should use your labor wisely and that will serve as your capital. In other words organize for mutual benefit and capital ceases to be so important to the equation.

"The moral problem is that it's just as unfair to not let people retire in luxury as it is to not give them enough to 'get by.' (What constitutes getting by anyway?)"

And in a system such as ParEcon that moral question is nullified. The system can be organized to allow all people to retire to a very decent life, not just some as is the case under capitalism. Also the determination of what is "a decent life" is given a wide range of personal variation, meaning that the individual is allowed to achieve what he wants out of the system up to a limit of what is reasonable and sustainable.

If you only want to work enough to meet your basic needs you can. If you want to be an ascetic you can. If you want to work really hard and be involved to achieve a very comfortable (yet not exorbitant) life you can.

The important aspect here is that when the work and the resources are being used for the direct benefit of all those that are involved in the system (not the enrichment of a small segment) equality prevails, people have to work less overall and at the end of the day get a better slice of the pie for the work that they do do.

""There is very little practical difference between having 100 million dollars and 100 billion dollars."

*faceplant* Are you serious?! Try running Walmart, or an oil company, or an airline, on $100 million."

In the sense of a corporation being a legal (yet fictional) person then sure that spurious argument makes sense. Just to be clear here corporations are not people like you or me and 100 million vs. 100 billion for personal use, while both are gross and unnecessary, would be more than sufficient wealth.

"Well, there are no billionaires in the UK, where the word billion means 10^12. ;) But it isn't just a question of the number of billionaires. It's a question of how many billions have been earned in fair business, and how many appropriated through forced transfer.

"Excessive wealth should be regarded"

By whom?"

If you want people to pay attention to your argument you might do better to avoid the semantic baseball bat, who cares that billion as a word has different meanings on different continents. However, at a certain degree of wealth the holder of that wealth no longer has to "work hard" the money does all the work (a good reason that the super-rich stay that way) and that is inherently unfair to the person that has to work exceedingly hard just to get by (usually for paltry wages working for a super-rich person). The wealth should be regulated either by personal altruism (fat chance there) or through some sort of progressive tax or caps on personal income, in other words by government (a little better chance but still prone to corruption).

"So answer me this: what is the optimum level of wealth? Please give a figure in currency or in commodities, or give me a configuration of material goods that compose the optimum wealth."

There is no optimum level of wealth really. One might say that a million dollars in the bank would be sufficient since the interest one would earn would afford that person a decent middle class lifestyle. The problem is that if everybody had this optimum setup nobody would work and nothing would get done and society would collapse. So really the optimum wealth would be closer to being a partner with real interest in an organization that one wished to work for/with collectively. We really do have many rivers to cross don't we. The issue really is wider than the Tibet vs China debate. Thought it is a current and vivid example of the current state of affairs in that part of the world; there is a bigger issue, namely what to do about China and it's treatment of human rights in general. It's not just the people of Tibet that are being oppressed (with the tacit approval of the west) but a huge swath of China's populace. We really need to address the bigger issue, look at the whole picture. And what can we do about that? Well, we can boycott, protest, argue back and forth but really what needs to happen is real change. So how do we accomplish that? Personally, I have a lot more respect for those that are actively trying to do something, anything. As with any sort of social change it's going to take a lot of effort and time to see any real results. But the little things we do today can have a huge effect tomorrow.

Is this setup stereoscopic? Looks like it is, but just can't tell.

Still too obvious to be useful for covert ops. Anybody would be able to tell that this is what it is. One day though and soon.

Two things here. China's current government is certainly a repressive regime that has no respect for human rights or self determination, after all isn't that why they took over and subjugated Tibet in the first place? For this reason (and a whole host of others) I support dissent on the PDRC. Secondly, the autonomous government of Tibet is also not the most humanitarian regime. what I mean here is that the regular citizen of Tibet is beholden to the whims of the priest class and is subject to all sorts of repression as dictated by their superiors. Therefore this issue is not so black and white. I will grant that what is happening is horrendous but the liberation of Tibet should be seen in the light of best interests. I make no determination here as to what the best interest is. That is still unclear. What I can determine is that every person should be afforded the right to choose what they want and what form of governance best suits them. Question authority, and accept only those that can justify their authority.
