July 10, 2008 1:01am

This is the kind of thing that can make or break a companies repretation (i'm looking at you PC World)

UK Home Secretary green-lights harassment of photographers in public places

Why women quit technology careers

June 19, 2008 7:07am

Its a shame that there arent more women in technology industries especially as women tend to have a different way of thinking problems though (and so bring anoter viewpoint to the table). Even so I find the figures in this article odd, granted my degree course has about 10% girls but the office I'm on placement in has more like 45/50% women working on equal with men and several senior VPs are women.

Dispite this I can see how women could find tech culture unappealing, to be honest when drinking with fellow tech heads our humour quality can dip into the "retarded chimp who gets maths/science" stage and the phrase "inyourendo" becomes the hight of comedy.

TruMedia defends its advertising spyboards

June 12, 2008 2:20am

Adonge has a point there, although not one i'm entierly happy with. This kind information is within there legal rights to collect, after all a computer taking in this information just from an image isnt much different from someone taking a crowed scene with a camera and tallying up the number of men/women in specific age groups.

I think it boils down to use rather than just collection, If I take a photo of someone on the street then there's not a lot I can do with it unless I take multiple photos of a person in harassing manner at which point it becomes an offence.
The difference is that this data is going to be fed into an analytics system of some kind which could be used to monitor peoples movements a-la Minority report (though using hollywood examples is always dangerous)

So we need to think about where this is going, do we sacrifice some of our free expression rights in order to protect ourselves or do we start talking about "intent" and wrapping this kind of issue with legislation?

New Guitar Hero DS trailer is epic failure

May 28, 2008 8:39am

I.....umm, umm, your doing it wrong.

Hit the singer with a stick, he's not only killing the game he's killing some rock band who's name momenterily escapes me, I'm terrible with rock band faces, is he actually someone important?

but yeah it had potential on the DS and I'm not going to rule it out until i see it but possibly some kind of accelerometer on a cord or something for the strimming would have been better (to make it go all air guitar)

UK teen faces prosecution for sign calling Scientology a "dangerous cult"

May 21, 2008 1:31am

Ok, the Police Officer was taking the whole thing to the nth degree but y'know devils advocate time:

Assume a (for example) neo-nazi had a sign saying "all jews should be exterminated" and was showing it an predominately Jewish area a reasonable interpretation of the public order act would be to ask him to remove the sign.

In this case.....its a bit fuzzy. Yes "the church of scientology" is a dangerous cult but as Anonomous have several times publicly stated the actual religion itself is as benign as any other religion.

Its difficult to draw a distinction between these two examples and I agree that the law may need clarification/review or the police may require more training on how do deal with grey areas like COH.

Gay consumers love Apple, but hate Samsung for some reason

May 15, 2008 2:12am

mmm the gay community could be playing an exceptionally long game of "we dont like what you did"
After all Samsung made equipment for Nazi concentration camps during WWII

omg Goodwins law, yeah I know but its all i can think of
Other than that........ Fujitsu (one of Siemens business partners) were really really unhelpful when I applied for an industrial placement so maybe they both have similar attitudes

Taking pictures on LA's Red Line violates the "9/11 Law"

May 15, 2008 1:28am

I'm currently collating information on photo law in order to do a talk at my local Uni in the UK so I can relay how events like this are supposed to be handled in the UK

1. Train stations, telecoms systems etc can be classed as at risk in terms of national security but have to be specifically named as such by the home secretary i.e. there is a known bomb threat at that station on that day.

2. If this isnt the case you are within your rights to take photos of the station from public property i.e. a road or public footpath

3. If your on the staion the station owner is within there rights to ask you to leave, if you refuse then you are trespassing and so are committing a civil offence, not a criminal offence.

Despite all of the above the worker was out of line treating you like that and not giving a specific reason for asking to you leave. Again a "sheriff" should not have been involved as it was not a police matter.

The best way to deal with this is to be calm and polite. If you feel you need to, get permission to take photos prior to going out.

Dear Virgin Media: if Net Neutrality is "bollocks" then you can get stuffed

May 7, 2008 8:24am

From what I have herd from some quaters Virgin Media are trying to distance themselves to a degree from these comments and as of yet Branson has not made a comment on this issue though if the issue persists it would be in his interest to knock heads together in order to control damage to his own image.

Regardless of this I am currently not a customer but will be as of July (as part of an all expenses paid rent agreement - a steal for a student house) so it would be difficult for me to get my landlady to change the contract because of an issue that quite frankly she wont understand, though I'm gonna try. Any recommendations of cheaper/better competitors to tempt said contract holder with?

Destroy others, self, with wrist-mounted DIY flamethrower

April 25, 2008 8:53am

There is something kinda cool about this, granted this guy is gonna blow/burn his hand off but even so its difficult to get an image of the "Firebat" infantry from Starcraft out of my head.

I suppose if this were a real project rather than just some kid nearly exploding whilst doing an x-men homage then having the nozzle a longer distance away from the hand, possibly mounted lower and further forward would be a good idea, also fireproof gloves and some kinda armour plating/shock absorbers/insulation on the entire thing

Just hope this kid remembered his trusty non-return valve else he's gonna be missing the entire kidney area when that belt mounted tank explodes

No friends yet.
