Dogs that know when their owners are coming home experiment
June 11, 2008 12:44pm
Our cat knows when one of us is home. It's a combo of expected time of day and hearing a vehicle in the driveway, methinks. When I'm off on business, the cat apparently just sits by the door and meows at every car for days.
However, the wording of this experiment would seem to indicate that the dog would know when the owner was coming home before any sound could possibly be heard. Like, when I leave my desk at work. Hopefully they control for "expected time of day."

Here's a nifty papercraft kit for tapping fingers!

This makes me grin from ear to ear.
Thank you. I think I'm printing this for inspiration.
Video of dog who won't go through screenless screen door
April 9, 2008 10:34am
(lost my post, reposting!)
I once read about an old psychology experiment where dogs were leashed so that they could only walk on an area of floor that was electrified. When the leashes were removed, the dogs could not will themselves to walk off of the electric floor, though nothing stopped them.
Unfortunately, this is the only thing I can think about when I see this video.
Vegan strippers

#7 - Are you thinking of "Primanti's?"
Also, while not vegan, I've heard that it can be a tough time to find ink/a tattoo artist who uses or knows about vegan ink.

My high school had a policy that you weren't allowed to sell things during school hours. Of course, this was ignored when fund raisers sent kids into the halls with boxes of M&M's, but there were always a few teachers who would get nasty about it.
Pro golfer hits balls at hawk until he kills it, then denies he tried to kill it
March 7, 2008 11:15am
When I was in high school, one of the guys on the golf team (who has a golf team in high school? wtf?) got in serious trouble after killing a groundhog or somesuch small animal. He claimed it had been injured and by killing it with a golf-club, he was trying to put it out of its misery.
Still all very sick.

Can't be only international, seein' as several of the above listed flights are within the us. I'd say it's more likely that the social aspect of the networking site leans toward westerners. But that's just my guess.
Anti-paint dumping ad from WWF -- effective and haunting

In our municipality, paint cans have to be empty and lids off (to prove emptiness) before the garbage trucks will take it. No word on how it's supposed to get empty - Guess I'll just keep painting that fence with all the leftovers. ;o)
False copyright claims are a lucrative business for sleazoids

This is one of my pet peeves. In fact, one website in particular has been getting under my skin with a similar copyfraud note:

Halloween Jack, I agree. I can't follow more than two lines of this without getting confused. I wouldn't read past these paragraphs.
Cardboard rocket-ship playhouse

I've been looking at some of the cool things that folks have made using these "bolt" type fasteners to build box castles and pirate ships. You could certainly put something together like the spaceship above if you could find a refrigerator box or the like:
Horse swing made from recycled aeroplane tyre

You can make your own with a sharp knife, some bolts and any tire that doesn't have a steel belt. (I've heard go karts or camper tires, etc are like this.) Several people sell patterns, but here's one that was put together for free:
