HOWTO keep your laptop from being searched at the border (it's hard)
May 2, 2008 8:44am
#50: "Here is how you get sensitive info past them. Create a new partition on your HD and move your private info to it. Delete the partition. At the border crossing co-operate with the border guard. If he does take a look there will be nothing suspicious to see. At home or in your hotel room use any standard disk utility to recover the deleted partition. Since you haven't saved any additional info on your machine it's very unlikely that you'll lose any data."
You're still putting your data at risk with this method. Why not use an ecrypted partition, created in some Program Files folder. Before you travel, rename it to something like whatever.dll, then remove the encrytion software from your machine (including registry entries). Safely at your destination, reinstall your encryption app, then rename back the partition file.
But I don't think most of these folks are very tech savy. You could probably get away with putting everything in a .zip file and then moving it to the system32 folder, renamed to something like winboing.dll.

Japanese creative packaging design solutions to ugly barcodes
April 4, 2008 3:11pm
Cute, but this also affects the accuracy of the bar code reader. Bar codes scanners need "quiet space" on either side of the code. The pizza example could cause some issues there. And the house example has reduced the readable height by about 25%. An annoyance for point-of-sale, but could cause big problems on coveyor systems where the read rate is determined by the bar code height and conveyor speed.

January 27, 2008 5:49pm
#75 Antinous, you'd be surprised how much has changed. I was down near the D Street projects recently and there was about a 50-50 mix of blacks and whites in the area. My sister lives in Southie. My niece was telling me over the holidays about how all of the asian immigrants that used to live across the street are gone, and have mostly been replaced by same sex couples. Apparently, two income, childless couples are about the only ones who can afford the high real estate prices. The old Southie lives on in the movies and maybe in the pubs, but I think the city you once knew has changed a lot. People love to cling to the old reputation of Boston as a racist city, but let's face it, racisim exists everywhere, and I don't recently reacall any nooses being hung from trees in Boston, or any Klan rallys either.

Bee Gees were excellent Beatles impersonators
January 17, 2008 1:26pm
I remember as a kid thinking their hit "Lonely Days" was a Beatles song, especially the intro.
The Wikipedia page on them also indicates that their first UK single "New York Mining Disaster 1941", released with a blank label, got heavy rotation because DJs thought it was the Beatles.

January 15, 2008 4:18pm
@ #17 I read somewhere that the tuner "hears" the frequency of, let's say the B string" and then it calculates the direction and degree of tuning required. That information is sent through the same string (at a much higher, I assume inaudible frequency) to the servo on the tuning key in question and the correction is applied.

Record industry practices revisionism about music recording
December 31, 2007 1:34pm
Here's an amazing story about how one record label (Victory) treated it's artists:
Music producers mixing for MP3
December 29, 2007 7:20am
@9 "ive never understood this loudness war. if a track doesnt have compression on it, it instantly sounds unprofessional weak and lame! theres no going back now."
But now that most prefessionaly produced CDs sound the same, there is an emerging market for analog studios, and I have had clients ask for "that 70's" sound. Just like once vinyl records gave way to CDs, digital samples of vinyl scratches and pops were produced to add that "warm" sound to digitally produced music.
Another way that engineers are changing the way they mix for today's clients, is that they are adding a high-frequncy boost in the kick drums so that the kick can be heard through notebook speakers.

How the UK government deals with a broken light bulb
December 19, 2007 2:32pm
Yes the list may be a bit over the top, but at least they are making an effort at informing the public of the risks. I, for example, have 8 of these in my home right now, so how many of these are in my town? I doubt that every homeowner in my town knows about small amount of mercury they contain. I'd like to think that most people will dispose of these properly, but most likey they will not.
Once my bulbs begin to expire, I will keep them with my paint cans and take them to my town's hazardous waste disposal day. BTW, the same goes for data projector and projection TV bulbs.
Anti-paint dumping ad from WWF -- effective and haunting
December 18, 2007 9:30am
My town has two hazardous waste days per year. You bring your harzardous waste items to the high school, and they sort them out for proper disposal.
This thread has made me think though, am I doing the wrong thing by cleaning out my brushes, rollers and pans in the sink? Maybe I should just let them dry out and then trash them? It's expensive to have to buy new brushes for every job, but I think we should all do this if it will reduce the cancer risk for future generations.
