These guys spent a little too much time down at the Korova Milk Bar.

Videos of the worst pop songs ever

OK, my nominations to the list. Sorry, no video links -- I can't justify the time spent searching for them.

"Age of Aquarius" - 5th Dimension
"In My Beautiful Balloon" - who the hell knows
"I Write the Songs" - Barry Manilow

In fact, let's just create a blanket Barry Manilow addition, and call it a day.

Writers honor Michael Moorcock, SFWA's latest grand master

Despite the well-documented dangers, about all my 13-year-old brain could think of (other than sex and naked women) was owning Stormbringer or Mournblade. Then those bullies at school would pay -- oh yes, they would pay.

Man naps in portalet

April 29, 2008 1:54pm

I don't know about you guys, but my olfactory senses don't nap when I do. How this guy can sleep in an enclosed booth less than 18 inches above a large container of urine and feces (and who knows what else) is beyond me.

Agree with #6, though -- why he was arrested for assaulting his own nostrils is beyond me.

Accused penis thieves captured

After reading the headline (but before reading the article) my first thought was of the King Missile song, "Detachable Penis." And now people are running around stealing them.

Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

April 24, 2008 6:58am

My co-workers give me strange looks for walking around the office in my sock feet, but dammit, I hate wearing shoes. The only time I put them on at the office is to go to the restroom. Otherwise, they'll just have to deal with my sock feet.

Hello Kitty tombstone

Not too many other uses for a Hello Kitty gravestone than to mark the graves of children. I find this incredibly sad to consider.

Atomic age wallpaper

April 8, 2008 6:58am

The thumbnail versions even work well as desktop wallpaper. Set to "tile" and enjoy! The metallics don't work very well due to the gradient, but the others look swell. My desktop is now set to "Island Turquoise."

CCTV cameras move crime a few feet down the sidewalk -- study

Wal-Mart loses trademark on smiley face

March 28, 2008 11:58am

Yup, methinks BCW20 and HankWham are one and the same, and a troll at that.

Saw this on Crooks & Liars, citing Countdown's "Worst Person in the World" from last night:

"Thursday’s Worst Person in the World on Countdown included Wal-Mart for the second day in a row. The retail giant took the bronze for unforgivably suing Deborah Shank, who was severely brain damaged after a car accident, for pretty much every penny she had. As it turns out, Shank’s son died in Iraq a week after losing the law suit and because of her severe memory lapses, she doesn’t remember that he’s dead — which means that every time she asks about him it’s as if she’s hearing it for the first time, EVERY TIME."

@BCW20: Mal-wart's shabby treatment of their employees is well-documented. And of course you're not going to hear them talk about the Debbie Shank case. But since you don't seem to know about it, here's the story on CNN:

RateMyCop censored by GoDaddy

March 12, 2008 6:25am

namecheap.com does pretty well by me, and their prices are more or less comparable to GoDaddy's. Plus they don't kill you with a thousand come-ons for their other products when all you want to do is register a damned domain name. And, they throw in WhoisGuard privacy protection free with each domain purchased.

I've been moving my domains over to them from GoDaddy for a while now. As each comes due for renewal, I transfer them instead. So far, so good.

Alleged CD-bootlegger abandoned in solitary jail cell, left to drink own urine

March 11, 2008 5:44pm

Oh come on - like you people have never gotten in a hurry to get the hell out of Dodge, and locked someone in solitary confinement and forgotten you did it (and forgot to tell anyone on the way the hell out of Dodge...)

Buuuut seriously, folks... he, no doubt, will be slapped on the wrist, put on desk duty for a month or so, and then returned to active duty. The city will settle with the plaintiff, and little more will ever be heard of this again.

Possessed: a documentary about hoarders

March 11, 2008 9:45am

@15: Dena, if she's living in those conditions, you may need to consider an intervention. You stated yourself that your 40-year-old doll house is consumed by mold. Imagine what else is contaminated by mold, spores, and other organisms? For the sake of your mother's health, you need to do something about this. That house is a biohazard, and she's living in it.

Disneyland's plans to change It's a Small World ires fans

March 5, 2008 8:32am

*sigh* one more place to boycott for silly jingoism. First, Johnny Rockets for their "American fries" and now a "Hooray for the USA!" section on "It's a Small World." It's been a long time since I last rode it, but isn't there already a "USA" section to go along with all the other countries anyway?

Dungeons & Dragons Creator Gary Gygax Passes Away; Interview

March 4, 2008 12:44pm

My friend Frank and I used to play D&D in the back of Mrs. Parker's 10th grade English class. She was a bit slow on delivery and would spend an entire week on a single subject. (Can you imagine an entire week spent reviewing gerunds?) Frank and I would take notes on Monday, then while she reviewed the same information Tuesday-Thursday, we quietly explored castles, caves, and forests, routing evil and plundering loot. Then on Friday, we would ace the weekly test, much to Mrs. Parker's chagrin.

Interestingly, she never complained to us, never made us stop, and never understood how we could "goof off" all week and still ace the tests...

New Arbitrary TSA requirement: all electronics out of your bag (cables, too)

January 31, 2008 9:01pm

I flew out of ATL to LGA a couple weeks ago; no big deal. Laptop in one bin, bag in another, shoes/phone, etc. in a third. Shuffle through, beep-beep, show them the change in my pocket, gather my stuff as quickly as possible, shuffle over to one of the unused sorting tables to reassemble, on to my gate for coffee. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly things moved, especially during evening rush hour at LGA.

Of course, these requirements you guys are describing could have been enacted in the meantime. It *has* been a couple weeks, after all.

Fossilized scorpion was bigger than a human

November 21, 2007 9:26am

All I can think of is the scorpion scene from one of those Golan-Globus movies - can't remember if it was one of the Sinbad movies or Clash of the Titans (I'm leaning towards the latter) where the giant stop-motion scorpions attack the puny humans.
