Teens desecrate grave to make pot pipe from skull

May 9, 2008 4:13pm

I grew up in a rural town and sadly it's not uncommon for redneck kids to be screwing with graves. Whether it's smashing 200 year-old headstones, knocking over headstones, breaking into crypts, or digging up graves - rural and remote cemeteries are at the mercy of the the community's bored and unattached youth. It's the kind of vandalism that can't be undone most of the time.

Gasoline to cost $10 a gallon in US soon?

April 28, 2008 12:04pm

Sadly, I think this could happen easily with our unchecked inflation. If we in the US paid $9 a gallon for gas AND got health care, 5 weeks minimum vacation, and affordable college there would be less to be tweaked about.

Sweet! This is the first I've heard about the free ice cream. I am totally going to Toronto next Thursday!

Photo of honor system at bookstore in Ojai, CA

April 14, 2008 5:14pm

In summers, you can still find vegetable stands in the rural areas around Ithaca, NY that operate on a "honor system" method.

I don't know if it'd be fully "honors system" or not, but to pay for your meal at a fish taco stand in Los Feliz (LA, CA) you go to the cashier and tell him or her what you ate (as opposed to paying when you order or getting a bill from someone). Once after being half-way home, my wife and I realized we'd screwed up; we'd been bigger pigs then we thought and had to turn around and go pay the difference.

DMZ Friendly Fire: reinventing war comics, making them better and more important

April 14, 2008 11:17am

I am definitely in the camp of believing we're in a new golden era. It's a simple question: Are there more GREAT comics now than there have been in ages? I think so. So many great series building up collections. The indie one-shot graphic novels are growing in numbers and find-a-bility allowing the gems to be created and found.

I'll reiterate that Y, Fables, and Walking Dead as some of the best to keep up with. I've never read any as single issues - just trades, so any gripes people have had with any of them just come off as lesser "chapters" to me.

Just finished the 2nd Scalped collection. The first volume was very good, but this one clinched it as another great series for me.

Happy 107th birthday to my grandmother!

April 11, 2008 3:56pm

That is fantastic. What a treasure for your family, Mark! So she was middle-aged during WW2?!! Amazing.

In recent years, every time I hear that someone has a chance to meet a centenarian I think about a BBC story I heard. The main point was "...how far back into the past a single meeting can take us"

It's obviously more fun if you can tie it to a historical event. For the reporter, it was back to the Battle of Waterloo. Here's the LINK to the text version of the story.

Ludicrously expensive bottled water for rich morons

April 11, 2008 12:30pm

Who cares? If people like water enough that they want to drop that cash, why do people get so freaked out? Some do taste different because of the origins and some are indeed just tap water. Maybe melted Everest snow or volcanic run off is fun for someone.

If you say you NEVER taste the difference between waters then consider it may be possible that others actually can and enjoy the experience of drinking it. Some folks think the only difference between Bud and and microbrew is the price. Maybe your lucky if that's how your tastebuds. Sometimes a cheap whiskey does actually kick the ass of a $50 bottle. Does that mean all $50 bottles are stupid?

Me, I've given up bottle water due to the packaging waste.

EFF fights for the rights of 3D modellers against bogus trademark claims

April 10, 2008 12:44pm

#3 Reminds me of U2 suing Negativland over the letter "U" and the Numeral "2"

That's a joke. Negativland's point was to make a faux looking U2 single. The plane is spelled "U-2." You can argue parody all you want, but the use of the letter U and the numeral 2 in the same manner as the band was not the leg they had to stand on. If Negtivland had just used the plane that would have helped.

Flickr adds video-sharing

April 9, 2008 2:14pm

The biggest reason I'm excited about Flickr having video is that I have yet to find a service that doesn't claim rights videos I post of my kid. Since services like YouTube are fast and easy I have begrudgingly used them. I looked into others that are consistently recommended but they all basically say "we can do what we want with videos." Now I have another option.

I've had many fears of Flickr adding video, but some of them are eased by the fact that only Pro users can upload.

Pro-Tibet protesters scale Golden Gate Bridge in SF

April 7, 2008 5:52pm

#13...Tibet hasn't even existed since 1950 or so.

And did it exit before 1913? That's the question that sits with many Chinese on one side of a giant canyon while the West occupies the other.

LA Times on home of the French Dip sandwich

April 7, 2008 11:09am

re: #27

Here's the Wikipedia page on French dip sandwich:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_dip_sandwich

I don't know that'll you be lucky enough to be able to order it double or triple-dipped anywhere but Downtown LA.

Philippe's French dip are very different from a "normal" version you'd get in less interesting places. PE Cole's place always seemed more standard which is good if you like it that's what you want. For me,as I said, above it's about the mustard (and the setting).

There's also MUCH controversy over how to pronounce the restaurant's name. I only learned the correct way from NPR recently.

And for the big Philippe's fans, I can give a positive review of the cool "vintage style" tees they sell. Mine came on an American Apparel tee and has held up very well:

LA Times on home of the French Dip sandwich

April 6, 2008 9:38pm

The sammiches are good, but for me, it's the mustard I get the hankering for!

Last time I brought LA visitors to Philippe's they didn't believe the 10 cent coffee was for real until they saw it on the receipt.

Best practices for water imbibing: "Just drink when you're thirsty"

April 4, 2008 9:49am

I heard this story and was furious. This guy is an idiot. I'm not saying he doesn't know his area of science, but when you only tell part of a story in confuses things. Yes, you don't need to drink 8 glasses of water a day, but you DO need to drink some or you WILL be dehydrated which plenty of people are. Not just people that are physically active, but plenty of us folks that are trapped at desks and forget to stop typing or put down the phone and get some fluids.

I was a little stunned NPR just let this guy's comments fly without any kind of counterpoint or clarification. And after the crazy cold and flu season we had this year...damn.

Glad you guys posted this (although I wish it were on the front page). Just read it over at Gizmodo and then looked through the dude's website and holy crap. My mind is numb. Something between terror and sadness. Here's the log of his first "experience" with his lady friend:

Bad Questions to Ask a Transsexual + "Stunning": Calpernia Addams.

March 24, 2008 4:19pm

@ #25 WorLord -

I think what most folks are talking about here is just common manners. As you said you had a friend you could pepper with questions. My guess is most TG's don't sweat answering questions from people they care about. But having a drunk frat boy or the person that moved into your neighboring cubicle ask you about your genitals would be out-of-line.

We're all curious, or we wouldn't be here looking through Boingboing's comments. I still have lots of questions for people with disabilities or from non-mainstream religions, but I'm certain they won't get answered the next time I sit next to blind guy on the subway.

Odd inspirations behind cool science fiction machines

March 24, 2008 10:46am

You may already know that George Lucas was allegedly inspired to create the AT-ATs by these cargo lifters at the Port of Oakland

As pointed out above that's bogus. It's urban legend. Too bad as it's a good idea for an article, but now I have to believe the whole piece is a joke.

Mastodon for auction

March 12, 2008 4:37pm

Is $115,000 really that inflated? I don't think you could make a new one for that. There's a presumption that there's a gazillion more of these to dig up at the La Brea Tar Pits. I reckon it'd cost more than 115K to get one out.

New Weird and parenting

March 4, 2008 2:28pm

I've got to second #4's booing of number #1: SpongeBob outsmarts and outcools Fantasy Island and A-Team astronomically. The sad reality for me usually is realizing we watched a lot of garbage as a kid and didn't know it(Can you make it through a Dukes episode?). As a parent now, I have to wonder how the hell our parents sat through it?

Raccoon takes cat's food: video

February 13, 2008 12:42pm

The rabies warnings are certainly true, but it's not that uncommon for coons to be out in the day. Growing up in the country, I found them to be a mischievous force to be reckoned with: whether they were busting into our home or just stealing our garbage. They are a fearless critter.

Alan Moore documentary on AlterTube

January 31, 2008 5:29pm

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY's Gerard Way did an interview with AICN where he referred to Alan Moore as a "gateway drug." So funny and so true. I haven't found another writer that better demonstrates or more clearly demonstrates "Ah, so this is what comics can be."

U2 manager blames silicon valley's "hippy values" for making him less rich

Here's more from McGuinness' rant:

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article3265717.ece

Another recent unfortunate idiocy from the fathead. I say unfortunate as the band has always worded their statements on P2P and filesharing very carefully in interviews acknowledging the lack of harm in live shows and the value of the technology to new artists.

Library of Congress uses Flickr to crowdsource tagging and organizing its photo archive

I do trust the Flickr community more than YouTube and most of the other media sharing communities. These will be essentially photography fans, not drunk 10th graders adding "no fat chicks" comments. They may not be historians or researchers, but having sifted through the LOC's online archive plenty, the Library could use any help they can get.
