Dell E will cost $299 in August, prompts mini-notebook navel gazing

July 16, 2008 9:27am

I lost the point of mini notebooks the more I look at smart phones and iphone/iclones, what's the point of a tiny notebook if they cost more then a phone, but offers about the same amount of function?

(you can say keyboards, but I think we all agree that it's more of a thumb-pad)

Bug-In Bag: What tools for the Outquisition?

July 14, 2008 10:33am

I guess the most important thing is some sort of mobile solar/wind generator to keep your gadgets charged, other then that and basic survival items (knives, flint, cotton soaked in vaseline wrapped in foil, empty coffee can with lid), I can't imagine what else you'd need.

oh, and a gun, a .22 for hunting, and a pistol for robbing, because it's easier to rob someone of their survival items when one of your hand is free.

Taking all bets: how long will it take Joel to get an iPhone 3G?

July 14, 2008 9:56am

So... is Joel wearing his 3G iphone as a cod piece, messaging everyone with overwhelming testicular fortitude yet?

Today Show's gadgets of tomorrow

June 30, 2008 7:13pm

What you people forget is that in the future, a loaf of bread will cost $50, and a carton of milk $120, so a $450 water filter connected to a $150 socket is just nothing but chump change for people with electricity.

That's to say that the future consist of two mega tribes, the Elitist Technologists who watches Today and sips coffee brewed by nanotechnological filtration pots, and the Thunderdomians, who slaughters the Technologists with spears and and cross bows for some radioactive-engineered soy milk and a loaf of sour doughe that is people, IT'S PEOPLE!

Nokia goes Supernova with new handsets

But what was that post about, something about balls, and bouncing... um... well SUPER BLOCK QUOTES CONTROLS GREAT!

Jack Black Beard Lube

June 27, 2008 12:33pm

Everything about that post was amazing, I want to take those words, and turn it into film noir visuals. Children will weep at this cinematic masterpiece.

Boing Boing Gadgets presents X-Maple pixel-flutter reduction block for PCIe

June 24, 2008 10:14am

The form factor's terrible, the wooden coloring doesn't lend itself to my computer intersphere's aethetics and frankly, is a distraction to proper computational Feng Shui. In fact, after I purchased two of these units and installed it into my single remaining PCI slot (after some snipping and soldering), I noticed a dramatic lack of performance in that my computer caught on fire and exploded, killing my wife and my dog. Now I'm just sitting here next to the train tracks, singing the technology robbed me of everything blues...

Something slightly different: when are you guys gonna bring back the BBG super breakout treatment for insane PR quotes?

I will be playing Team Fortress 2 tonight

June 18, 2008 4:22pm

God damn Valve need to stop making me pee my pants in delight.

Keyboard design lacks keys

June 12, 2008 10:41am

What's that stuff manufacturers like to include on touch screens, septic feed back? yeah, that thing, where you touch the key and you die of terrible infection, right...

Maybe i mean hepatic...

New Guitar Hero DS trailer is epic failure

May 28, 2008 9:39am

It had the dynamic feel of those bud light "real american genius" commercials, but more annoying.

God damn that really is some spectacular fail.

The Silverlit i-Fairy, a pastel-colored RC butterfly

May 19, 2008 1:19pm

I like the idea of a fairy butterfly chaser, but I request that the chaser comes in the form of a hypersaturated meadow with a gadget editor at play with said fairy.

Tippi Micro Gel Grips: Performance Phalange Prophylactics

March 26, 2008 9:00am

Oh hell, I just realized that I'm getting excited about rubber fingertip technology.

Tippi Micro Gel Grips: Performance Phalange Prophylactics

March 26, 2008 8:56am

I like the idea of the giant holes on top for the knuckles and fingernails. The old rubber fingers are nice, but they tend to cause my fingers to sweat due to complete insulation, and then they'd slip off my fingers because of all the liquid stored inside.

And for someone that works with giant files and have to scan them quickly, the finger grip/moistening gels just isn't a viable option.

I'm gonna stop by office max and check this out, now I can be fashionably trendy and efficient, score!

Video: Tennis Ball Launcher Provokes Endless Dog Play

March 17, 2008 7:36am

Dogs may be men's best friend, but clearly, a machine with a ball feeding baby is a dog's best friend.

and it'll never trick the dog by making it think you threw the ball, even though you didn't.

Boing Boing...The Maternity Store!

February 26, 2008 2:38pm

wait, so windows mobile didn't even send you guys machines to pimp, all you guys would be doing is putting up map of the location and then it'll say "sponsored by windows mobile"?

I'm serious, guys, you need to figure out this payola/plugola thing, like requesting a Bugatti Veron for your plugs.

POWAH!

Boing Boing...The Maternity Store!

February 26, 2008 2:04pm

I'm a bit confused, did you take the picture with the iphone, then uploaded the post through windows mobile somehow, or was this done on a completely separate machine?

Bible story comix featuring giant killer robots

February 19, 2008 9:57am

I love the concept, it seems silly and will probably be great fun.

but the character design is absolute crap, though. no offense to the artists, but the least they could have done was not letting the "human" characters look like an amateurish web manga attempt.

CookTek Portable Induction Cookers for Woks

January 15, 2008 11:09pm

This is a much safer method for a wok enthusiast then, let's say... drilling a hole in the wall so I can run gas piping through and mod myself a propane powered specialty wok stand, just so I can start using the thin circular bottomed woks.

I look forward to this product's proliferation, but if the product's designed to heat the pan and not actually create heat itself, I hope it won't take long for it to make a wok reach burning hot. As woks sold for chinese restaurants (and chinese food enthusiasits) are actually thin pieces of metal designed to pass heat through quickly. I had to settle for a thick wok, just so it can retain some decent heat while I'm flipping the food (on my horrible flat electric stove top).

Dalek-based security on the Toronto subway

January 15, 2008 10:59pm

GASP, ROSE IS COMING BACK???

and I think that warning system's a failure, which half decent doctor who out there wouldn't have loved to be anally penetrated by a Dalek?

Then again, the system might be a success, if they are measuring success by the amount of dissapointed fans who were not penatrated after violating the pay toll/no tardis rule.

Bag of rice with new baby's photo

Hot...Rock? Hot Rock!

January 3, 2008 8:54am

Maybe it's about time to start a "fail" category. Unless it's against the boingboing policy to hurt designer's feelings...

LifeHammer Vehicle Escape Tool

January 2, 2008 2:25pm

@CAZART: FOR POOPING, SILLY!

Just kidding, but I've always wondered how well you can swing a hammer at your window in the enclosed space, I have a Tahoe so that's not too much of a problem, but what about the smaller vehicles?

Old Age Rejuvenator Centrifuge of 1935

December 31, 2007 6:35am

I just recently finished playing the video game Bioshock, and I can't help but see that image as something that may have been used in the game. The picture didn't help.

Machine Girl trailer: 1 girl, 1 arm, 1 gun, pure win.

December 11, 2007 7:02am

Are all Japanese films now look like something they filmed for a tv soap opera, or is that something that just happens to the trailers.

You know, they put this "film effect" on movies, all movies has a "film effect", but it seems that recently more and more japanese film trailers look like something out of their weekly tv soap.

I'm not talking about special effects, just the... film quality.

Reason TV: paramilitary raid on veterans' poker game

December 3, 2007 4:19pm

Yes keeping gambling illegal is stupid, but the thing is this: it is currently illegal to gamble (besides the lottery) in the state of Texas. In order for the game to be used as charity, the players can only put money in to enter the game, and that they can leave with PRIZES, not ACTUAL CASH. I feel terrible for the veterns that got busted, but it is THEIR responsibility to make sure that they are playing with the rules. It is unfortunate that they had a neighbor who hates gambling, it is unfortunate that the cops thought it was some seedy illegal gambling joint (other then a friendly neighborhood game), but you can't establish a poker game with players exchanging money and charge an entry fee, that turns the local from a charity game to a gambling den.

Also, making gambling illegal isn't as simple as a snap of the fingers. There are powerful lobbies out there AGAINST the legalization of gambling, and I'm not talking about the religious zealouts. Large gambling institutions located in Shreveport, LA and Oaklahoma depends on the traffic from Texas, not to mention Vegas, who has a large percentage of customers from the North Texas area (the rich ones). They would have no problem funding money for advertising or what not to over power the small percentage of the population that actually wants gambling to be legal.

And frankly, I don't care if gambling is legal or not, so there.

Future Verizon Phones Will Speak GSM and CDMA Both

December 3, 2007 6:51am

I'm seriously scared, I can't help but see this as some sort of corporate wool pulling. The problem is that back then I can just rely on them being incompetently evil, but now it looks like they are developing smarts, and I can't predict what they are gonna do, and IT. FRIGHTENS. ME.

Random Thought on UI Benchmarking

November 29, 2007 2:47pm

Man do I feel embarrassed. One of the last things I want to do is to visibly show off but that's exactly what I do with all the new gadgets I get my hands on. I can't even imagine how I'll be able to stop talking about the jesus phone if I ever get my hands on one...

I just may be able to smile again... *sniff* thank you, boingboing.

Hello Kitty Bicycle Tires

November 27, 2007 1:21pm

Laser projection? They'll just carve a giant Hello Kitty face right onto the moon with a huge laser.

I love that now every time I run over a kid with my bike, I can say I did it out of love, the Hello Kitty imprints on their face says so.
