Good blog, but sometimes it seems like they're trying too hard to find stuff... case in point, the Curves cereal box.

TSA: laptops will stop making planes explode if you just build a bag like this one

March 5, 2008 12:28pm

A friend of mine had an interesting experience with "TSA Approved" baggage.

He was going to Africa to do big game bowhunting. In order to comply with TSA standards, he purchased a TSA approved case for his bow — apparently, the way it works is that the flyer has a key and TSA has a master key which can open any of these cases. Upon arriving at the airport, the conversation with TSA went something like this:

TSA guy: Can you open this case?
My Friend: I though you had a key.
TSA Guy: Huh?
Friend: I bought this case specifically to comply with TSAs standards. I already had a case for my bow.
TSA Guy: Huh?
Friend: Can I see your supervisor?
Supervisor: Oh yeah, we're supposed to have keys for these...
Friend: But...
Supervisor: We never got them.

Smoking ban workaround in bars: Hold "theater nights"

February 25, 2008 2:04pm

A notorious topless dance club in my hometown of Erie, PA did this same trick in the mid-90s — although in that case, it was to circumvent the newly christened "No Topless Dance Club" city ordinance. No topless dance clubs? Okay... but this law doesn't say anything about topless dance theater!

Worn Free's vintage tees made famous by rockers

February 16, 2008 4:30pm

I'm sorry, but I don't buy the whole "this isn't Wal-Mart" argument as an explanation for why they might cost $40.

Look at Threadless. Now THAT is a brilliant concept in t-shirt marketing, and they manage to sell their shirts for $15 (and even less during their frequent $10 sales).

TNH, your post is pretty revisionist. There were a number of posts that disagreed with the shirt's message — saying nothing of the price — that were deleted as well.

I find your moderation style to be a bit overzealous. And in saying that, I fully expect this post to eventually be deleted as well.

Engraved Victorian tentacle-horrors from Dan Hillier

November 19, 2007 8:06am

I'm pretty sure these images aren't Dan's "drawings" as much as they are collages/reworks of existing engravings. I recognize most of the elements from the Dover Pictoral Archives (as organized in some great-and-cheap paperbacks by Jim Harter).

This is also the same source from which O'Reilly culls the animal images used for the covers of their books.

Boing Boing hoodie by GAMA-GO!

November 7, 2007 1:01pm

Good call on the Threadless suggestion, if not for any other reason than to let the less-than-independently-wealthy Boing Boing fans show some love.

Hey, you could have one of them "________ loves Threadless" contests/promotions they're so fond of doing. (Where "_________" = "Boing Boing," duh.)

I wonder what the overlap is of "people who read Boing Boing" and "people who would spend $120 on a sweatshirt."

UK Minister detained at Dulles airport

October 29, 2007 6:59am

Well, Boomzilla beat me to the punch... I mean, this just sounds like the standard TSA rigamaroll nowadays.

Additionally, check out the Reddit thread on this story — as someone there points out, apparently this guy voted for similar security measures in the UK. So what's he whining about? He made his bed, etc.
