Shoes are bad for your feet? Vindicating the barefoot set

Walking barefoot is gross and the more you do it the bigger and more monkey-like your feet will become.
I had to sit next to some hippy on the plane for four hours recently. Upon sitting down, he immediatly took off his sandals an put his disgusting, black soled, yellow toneailed feet up on the bulkhead wall for all to enjoy.

La Crosse Technology PC-900 AlphaPower Battery Charger Reviewed (Verdict: Still Awesome)
March 20, 2008 4:00pm
Good post.
The cheap "Energizer" chargers that Best Buy and Wal-Mart sell are JUNK. I used to throw away my rechargeables once the cheap chargers refused to charge them anymore.
I bought a similar charger to yours made by NexxTech and it's awesome. It happily charged batteries that had been lying around for over a year. I have not thrown away a rechargeable battery since I bought this charger.
Interesting anti-graffiti sign
March 11, 2008 5:56am
I prefer the use of violence to deter vandalism then cute little notes.
All graffiti is cowardly. These people seem to be saying "I have something to say but I'm afraid to say it, so I will write it on bathroom walls, dark alleys, anywhere I cannot be seen.
At best it's a pathetic cry for attention. "Look at what I did! I exist! Notice Me!"
Renault Megane Concept Coupe's Insectoid Doors
March 6, 2008 10:32am
Ugh. The surest sign that a concept vehicle will never make production is when it has driver and passenger doors hinged anywhere except at the leading edge.
There is a reason we have been making cars this way for 100 years. Most of the other methods for hanging car doors are dangerous or impractical.
I had a friend who owned a gull wing equipped Bricklin in the eighties. If you opened the door when it was raining (or if the door was wet for any other reason) you got about 1/2 a gallon of water dumped on your head.
There was a story in the paper a couple of years ago about some guy getting trapped in 300K Lamboghini because of an electrical short.

I'm sure the magnets themselves could be made cheaper but electromagnets that powerful likely suck down a lot of coal juice.
Still the technology could be a breakthrough for the disabled, remote surgery etc.
Does Mighty Putty Work?

FNARF - beat me to it.
God I hate Billy May. I thought that ponytailed freak Tony Little was annoying.
Most nights its the megatone/monatone voice of Billy May that alerts me that I have fallen asleep on the sofa in front of the TV again.
Video: Music Video Pays Homage to Futuristic '80s Television Bumpers
March 3, 2008 6:42am
I still think about this clip every time I hear the HBO music.
Thanks to Reed Savory for the link to the "Behind the Scenes" clip. I remember being fascinated by it when I was a kid. In these days of computer graphics, it's amazing to think they actually built a stainless steel HBO sign. Even the multicolored streaks that appear when you "fly into" the "O" were done manually with little lights.
The city model has not stood the test of time very well. It looks about as real as Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.
Does anyone remember the "Short & Specials" HBO used to play between movies? I used to love these.
How about "Not Neccesarily the News"?.
Graffiti at the National Portrait Gallery
February 20, 2008 12:25pm
Ugh..I despise graffiti and resent attempts to elevate it to an art form.
Graffiti's is often the most visible indication that you have just entered a "bad" neighborhood.
I see no more value in the large wall covering spray paint "murals" than I do in the crude words etched into every gas station bathroom mirror.
Grafitti is an indication of vandalism, property damage, decay.
Indonesian trains spray "roof riders" with identifying paint
February 20, 2008 6:02am
Seems like simple I-beam frames with about 6 inches of clearance above the trains roof every 500 meters or so would be a lot cheaper (and far more effective) than the fancy paint system.
If the Indonesion authorities are reading this, I freely donate my design to your country. I just ask that you refer to them as Bill's Patented Roof Rider Scrapers.
Remember to send someone up top every once in a while to hose off all the bloody ankle stumps.
1960s police movie, "LSD: Trip or Trap?"
February 19, 2008 6:03am
Hillarious! It even came complete with the stretched out wavery audio track I remember so well from school.
I would like to find some of the old gory drivers education tapes that showed car wrecks complete with mangled corpses.
Documentary about women who collect fake babies
February 13, 2008 7:40am
The whole "baby fever" thing has always creeped me out. It's like some biological switch clicks over in a womans brain, her pupils dialate and her entire personality drains out of her skull.
I have lost touch with a few female friends over the years shortley after they became pregnant because all of a sudden, they could literaly speak of nothing else. After the baby is born they turn into mommy-bots. No more TV, no more books, no more friends except other mommy-bots.
The thing with the dolls seems to be extreme baby fever missing the baby.
Full body pyjamas designed to stop itching
February 7, 2008 11:09am
Travelodge spent money trying to figure out what keeps people awake and came up with "itchiness"??
The few times I have been unfortunate enough to stay in a Travelodge, I had bigger problems than itchiness keeping me awake. Like drunks in the corridors and parking lot all night, like maids repeatedly pounding on the door at 7:00AM "HOUSEKEEEEPING!!", like the room next to mine having 10 people staying in it and assorted other issues.
The sad thing bout Travelodge is that they have a few good franchisees that run nice hotels (there is one in Phoenix which is quite nice) but they are so inconsistent that you can never make a reservation without first seeing the property in person.
Wedding cake clone of bride
January 15, 2008 2:26am
@ Squashy
I have not gotten married. My girlfriend and I are happily living in sin.
If your wedding was cheap I assume you got married at home. Your wife must be unusually practical. The most (only) enjoyable wedding reception I ever attended was a low key affair at someones home. That was about 10 years ago and the couple is still together.
I agree with your idea of using the money for a down payment on a home rather than a fancy wedding.
Going deeply into debt for a party is no way to start a life together.
Wedding cake clone of bride

@ Ms. Theresa Nielsen-Hayden
I'm sorry you feel that my post was full of cliches but I happen to know what I'm talking about.
My Bridezilla mother has been married five times. Each time with a big church wedding. I have two friends still paying for weddings which produced marriages which no longer exist.
Modern weddings are an insane waste of money.
I'm eagerly awaiting a post on engagement rings.
Wedding cake clone of bride
January 14, 2008 3:23pm
Another example of how weddings have become an orgy of selfishness for pathologically self-centered brides.
There is really no male equivelant to the wedding. 50 to 500 grand for a one day party where nobody has fun and the napkins arriving in the wrong color can destroy the whole thing.
All so the bride can feel like a princess for the day.
High heels: tottery killers (infographic)
January 7, 2008 12:19pm
I love how the woman in the graphic wearing heels is also wearing a sexy cocktail dress and the woman in the flats is wearing either boring cargo pants or "Mom Jeans".
As a guy I think heels are real sexy on women but I also think deformed feet and toes on 40 year old women are disgusting. All things in moderation girls.
Modern Mechanix Round-Up
January 4, 2008 11:44am
The multi screen tv is not such a bad idea. I thought I remembered seeing a photo somewhere of President Ford using something similar in the whitehouse.
Back when I was a bachelor I had 3 TV's in my living room. One was the main tv, the other was used for the tv guide channel and the 3rd was often left on the weather radar channel or used for surfing during commercials.
My girlfriend has imposed a strict one tv rule on our living room. So I make due with one 50" Plasma.
Edison electrocuted an elephant 105 years ago today

Btw...Benjamin Franklin also electrocuted many animals and explored the idea of using electricity for human excecutions.
What a world of truly "safe aviation" would be like
January 4, 2008 11:34am
The sad thing is that the security headache we go through now would have seemed just as ridiculous as these a few years ago.
Tens of millions of people have to remove their shoes in security because one wack-job decided to put a bomb in his shoe 6 years ago. What will happen if/when someone puts a bomb up their ass? Will all of us sheep just get used to bending over for cavity searches everytime we go to see Grandma?
I personally believe that the TSA has not added to the security of airplanes one bit. The biggest reason terrorists have not tried 9-11 style attacks again is because it would never work.
The 9-11 victims sat quietly and passivly (except for the PA plane) because they believed they would go back to the airport and sit through a hostage situation.
If this was tried now, every passenger on the plane would rise up and beat the terrorist into a fine paste because they would know they would die if they did not do something.
Edison electrocuted an elephant 105 years ago today
January 4, 2008 7:41am
I have read a couple of fat biographies on Edison. He was pretty much a bastard to his family, his employees and his competitors (and apparantly to animals).
The phonograph was his only truly original invention. When Edison developed the light bulb there were already several types of electric lights in use.
Later in his life he really bought into the whole "you have brought light to mankind" demigod bull that he was being fed.
Many of the people we consider "Great Inventors" had some serious personality flaws. Ford was a huge anti-semite and early fan of Hitler, Alexander Grahem Bell almost certainly stole the design for telephone outright and don't even get me started on the Wright Bros.
How Circuit City Committed Suicide
January 2, 2008 7:58am
I support Circuit City's decision.
I have never met a useful salesperson in my life. Even before the internet I always did research before making big-ticket purchases. Invariably, sales people tell me things I know to be incorrect or just outright lies.
The best example of this at the moment is the very hard sell for expensive HDMI cables you must suffer through at any big box retailer when buying an HDTV.
I do not want to pay for a so called "knowledgeable salesperson". Just make sure there is some kid in a blue, red, or yellow polo shirt nearby to go get my stuff and ring me up.
I just picked up a 50" Plasma TV at CC for $1200.00. The same tv was $1999.00 at Best Buy. For all I care they can use trained monkeys for salepeople at those prices.
The Lingering Typewriter
November 8, 2007 5:47am
A few years ago I worked for an office equipment dealer in Florida. There was a grouchy old guy who worked in the back room that was probably one of the last IBM Selectric repairmen in the country. Customers drove hundreds of miles to have their beloved Selectrics tuned up or repaired.
We heard stories that for a while in the 70's you could not hire a professional typist unless you provided IBM Selectrics. People who typed for a living simply refused to use anything else.
Solar powered immigrant shelter provides Internet access
October 18, 2007 5:43am
Typical liberal insanity.
There will be a family of eight living in this thing within a month. I hope they actually follow through with the project and post the results.
If this thing is placed on a heavy route I have no doubt it will be all but destroyed withing two weeks.
These "nice hardworking immigrants just looking for a better life" destroy fences, break into homes, kill pets and livestock and steal anything which is not bolted down.
"Water Hobo" sprays yard-cutters with water
October 15, 2007 10:14am
I am all for this.
Should be legal to have a similar device that shoots bb's or fire.
We may have to accept other peoples brat kids in restaurants, on airplanes and in hotels, we should not have to put up with them on our own property.
I finally moved to downtown Montreal where I see far more dogs than children. It has been very peaceful.
No friends yet.
