Spokane County employee run to ground by Feds for taking pic of weigh station

May 15, 2008 8:59am

things like phone number, address, etc. are all, and have been for a very long time, one your DMV records. That part is nothing new. I just don't get how there's an increasing amount of law enforcement types essentially trying to enforce a law that doesn't exist. searched out a bunch of articles yesterday and the only one that made any sense was the guy documenting the construction on the WTC site getting permission for it. After all, photos of a building that is certainly a reasonably expected target while it's still being build could be useful.

But again, all of this seems to ignore that there;s ways to perform surveillance that don't involve cameras. And that none of the terrorist attacks in the US in the last 20 years would have been prevented by doing this.

Is there any security in the US that's NOT pure theatre?

just found this donloadable PDF about photographer's rights. US, presumably: http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm

New Gnarls Barkley video and backstory

May 12, 2008 10:10pm

freaking nice video

RIAA says DRM is coming back -- in the future, you won't own music

May 9, 2008 9:19am

I just got an idea. New government group in charge of coming up with bloody stupid invasive ideas every month. Just bundle DHS and RIAA into one nice big idiotic package, based out of one building in washington.

then, of course, demolish said building.

Band "shoots" video by sending Data Protection Act requests to CCTVs that caught them performing

May 9, 2008 9:12am

So.... asking for the video footage can be done, apparently easily. What would have happened if they'd filmed with digital cameras near a mall and got one of the CCTVs in the frame?

just saying, that if they're worried about surveillance, using the cameras themselves is one way to do it.

Some China firms outsourcing to USA to cut costs

May 7, 2008 10:35pm

It' funny but cool, as well. since the US has been slowing it's production and just buying stuff made everywhere else, it's good to make stuff there as well.

Looks to me that the chinese are crunching ALL the numbers instead of just looking at labour costs.

CCTVs don't solve crime in UK; Scotland Yard's answer: more CCTVs!

May 6, 2008 1:39am

It hasn't worked because we simply didn't put in enough cameras! of course!

Paying for the London Underground with a dissolved, naked Oyster card

May 5, 2008 8:44am

I can see movement tracking as being a useful thing for police. Someone uses the tube after killing someone, or to verify someone (or at least their card) was on ethe tube at the time of the murder.

as for using it to harrass/ track random innocent people... well if their database has only the amount of info that DHS' no- fly list has then maybe, but if it has any amount more... like age...

Shelby County, TN Sheriff: watch out for photographers and radical greens, they might be terrorists

May 4, 2008 9:26pm

couldn't the terrorists just google a potential target fro photographs of it?

oh wait... all terrorists are illiterate. forgot.

and forgetful since visual surveillance is outside of their abilities.

seriously who made up this BS?

DHS grounds air marshalls for having names similar to the no-fly list

May 1, 2008 11:25am

So, how many years before they realise that a mere list of first and last names is kinda insufficient for identifying possible terrorists? They've reached Latter-day USSR levels of inefficiency here.

Perfect length for a pop song: 2:42

April 17, 2008 10:49am

I despise everything about the mamas & papas version of california dreamin. The Edde Hazel version, of course, is awesome. And 6:20.

Oregon: our laws are copyrighted and you can't publish them

April 15, 2008 11:43pm

I think they flat out miss the point of copyright- to prevent others from profiting on your intellectual property. In a case where no profit is even possible- why care?

Satellite to be junked because lunar flyby is patented

April 11, 2008 10:08am

I hardly think this is the only example of the US patent office making an error. or of the US trying to enforce internal laws outside it's borders. meh.

Wal-Mart corporate archivist selling access to recordings of exec meetings to plaintiff-side lawyers

April 10, 2008 10:16am

half a million US equals 317,641.05 EUR. those who care can find out really really quickly.

Gogol Bordello's punk gypsy

April 6, 2008 10:04am

Well, I was referring to how every major music mag in north america was shitting themselves over the band in the summer.

personally don't care for them, but oh well.

Gogol Bordello's punk gypsy

April 5, 2008 3:03pm

Hm. you're only about six or seven months behind everyone else on this one.

Nickname triggers bomb scare at Florida State University

April 4, 2008 1:28pm

In the defence of the police, and such, it should be noted that if I were to actually plant a bomb somewhere i most definitely would clearly label it "Bomb" and maybe make it look all cartoony, complete with being cherry- red in colour.

Most people wouldn't take it seriously and that would be their downfall.

And of course, once things had been made clear, no charges were laid. seems like as amusing as this is, they handled it's pretty rationally.

Air Canada: for $35, we'll let you talk to customer-service reps who can actually help you with a cancelled flight

April 4, 2008 1:16pm

Another reason why I say that if, say British Airways or Lufthansa were to run domestic flights in Canada or US, local airlines would go down like their wings were clipped.

London's Spitalfields market: shoot the architecture, we take away your camera

March 31, 2008 1:19pm

Let's not bother to mention how painfully easy it is to hack into the radio signals of CCTV cameras. You don't need to know where they are if you already know what you can see.

You'd think that the underground bombings and other events which tend to speak of careful planning would tell these idiots that stupid stuff like this isn't going to stop anybody who's truly interested in doing damage.

Man installing satellite TV kills wife

March 29, 2008 5:39pm

I'm still baffled that a .22 had enough punch to actually go through the walls of a house. You'd think the outer wall at least would stop it, since .22 isn't exactly the caliber of choice to piercing....

BUt yes, it sucks for the wife, and I can see why no charges would result... although I feel that revocation of a gun licence (I assume he had one) would be an obvious consequence.

America's war on tourism: airlines to foot the bill for fingerprinting foreigners as the leave the US

March 17, 2008 11:26am

This is simply stupid (almost) beyond belief. It's another piece of evidence of the pure fantasy world that the current US government lives in. Are these imaginary terrorists any different from the imaginary WMDs in Iraq?

Gah. and a quick reminder to anyone who voted Republican in the last 2 elections: THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT.

Oh.. and regardless of how effective it's been catching minor immigration violations, the cost isn't worth it. 15 mil. is not even a good price tag for catching a serial killer.

Record companies don't share money extorted from file-sharing fans with artists

February 29, 2008 3:52pm

I thought this was common knowledge already. What is less commonly known is that most artists lack any clause that accounts for legit digital downloads, like iTunes. Meaning you think you're doing the right thing by the artist by paying for your download but WHOOPS! they see none of the money, because the labels isn't legally required to pay them. So the labels gets to spend $0 on production costs and get all the money. Nice system eh?

HOWTO use a WWII radio-operator's headset with your MP3 player

February 22, 2008 11:26am

Alright.. read the article and basically it was: 1)take out old speakers 2) put in ones ripped from newer headphone set.

why the hell would someone trouble themselves to put a tutorial online for this? Anyone whoe wanted to do so could figure that out in about 5 minutes. Tutorials are for things that are actually hard to do. And preferably more useful than this.

Bush administration wants Europeans' family details, the right to put armed officials on European planes, and a pre-approval for European visitors

February 20, 2008 9:53am

So... how will doing this prevent 9/11 from happening?
Oh wait. it already did. And there's been no significant incidents since. So OF COURSE security must go up.

LP collection comes with a battery operated toy car that is a record player.

February 20, 2008 9:39am

Aside from one of these toy cars (which, at least the ones put out however many decades ago they first showed up, sounded TERRIBLE) being included in a limited edition vinyl set... nothing new here. Not even very interesting.

US gov wants data on Europe air passengers

February 12, 2008 10:24am

Homeland Security guy #1: Hey there's been no incidents worth noting since 9- 11
Homeland Security guy #2: Really? guess we need to beef up security even more then huh?

Since the original terrorists they're still trying to stop entered fully legally, this won't stop the wrong sort from entering. it WILL make it more annoying for all the legitimate sorts though.

Bush can't leave the white house soon enough.

Badass rayguns: postapocalyptic, steampunk, deadly

January 28, 2008 10:17am

Well, it is called the "Kenny G Eliminator" on the website. So using a clarinet is pretty appropriate. Of course, Kenny G plays clarinet as well as the sax.

TSA to punish fliers for facecrime

January 2, 2008 1:48pm

They were already more likely to give advanced screening to people who voiced complaints. IMO, this just gives them an excuse to harass people who MIGHT voice a complaint.

The TSA hasn't introduced a single useful measure. They're just making stuff up to look like they're doing something.

No friends yet.
