Star Trek cake

May 28, 2008 6:36am

I'm kinda depressed by all the people complaining about the "crew" not being in the right positions.

People! Can't it just be a freakin' awesome cake?

(I would -love- to get these guys to do my birthday cake, but they don't deliver outside of Baltimore. :

Add me to the "Case on it's own" crowd, but...hmm...

Video: The evolution of mobile handsets

May 20, 2008 8:42am

Is one of those "Future" phones the fake handsets they used in Earth: Final Conflict?

How horrible is it that I recognized it?

First Mobile Internet Device to cost as much as four Eees, three iPhones, 55 peggles.

...well, I hadn't ever even heard of these guys, and now I'm that much less likely to give them a try.

From rendering to reality: Asus's desktop Eee PC

May 13, 2008 5:37am

Aside from the stand, and the ...unique... side art, what, exactly, is different?

I think the differents in the whites of the actual box as compared to the concept may be as simple as a camera with poor white balancing.

I still don't think I'd mind having one around.

Dave's Adjustable Hot Sauce lets you dial in the pain

Fantastic idea!

Except for the whole "mixing mayo and malt vinegar" thing. Malt Vinegar is the only thing that needs to go onto fresh, hot fries.

Transforming Optimus Prime iPod dock! Squee!

Jeez. And I just bought an iPod Dock/alarm clock, too, but....damn, I want it!

Power On Self Test: Insert Coin

I -think- it's supposed to be a magic fingers style chair, but I'm not volunteering to find out.

When I had a candybar or pda phone, I was really bad about forgetting the keylock and trouserphoning people all the time.

A flip avoids that nicely.

Thanks for the irritating robot trashcan, Japan!

April 18, 2008 1:26pm

Yeah, I think I'd probably spend more time whacking it with a golf club than letting it clean my kitchen.

Gotta say, though - John, I think I figured out why your posts just don't seem to gel quite right with the site.

I think you're trying too hard to be funny, and not enough to have fun - the post about the blind and the internet was obviously interesting to you, and it was really good! This and some of the others you posted today just felt like you're trying to force it a bit.

Random opinion, doesn't matter much...just something that's kinda been at the back end of my head since you started this week and crystalized for me when I read this post.

Just relax! We're all here to enjoy it.

Saudis set to execute illiterate, beaten woman for "witchcraft"

February 22, 2008 6:35am

Sadly, it's nothing new there.

But, I think Aaron Sorkin said it best.

"Outraged? I'm barely surprised. This is a country where women aren't allowed to drive a car. They're not allowed to be in the company of any man other than a close relative. They're required to adhere to a dress code that would make a Maryknoll nun look like Malibu Barbie. They beheaded 121 people last year for robbery, rape, and drug trafficking. They have no free press, no elected government, no political parties. And the Royal Family allows the Religious Police to travel in groups of six carrying nightsticks and they freely and publicly beat women. But 'Brutus is an honorable man.' 17 schoolgirls were forced to burn alive because they weren't wearing the proper clothing. Am I outraged? No. . . . That is Saudi Arabia, our partners in peace."

Gloom: gothy card-game challenges your ability to create misery

February 18, 2008 10:24am

I love Gloom - if I have one complaint, it's that the cards can be -very- easy to lose because of their transparency! Quite shopvac friendly, too. :(

Regardless, it's a great game to play with some less than sober friends for a few hours.

Galley: New York Toy Fair '08

Joel,

Those "Bioloid" toys look really neat! I assume it's some kind of modular robot construction kit?

Will we get to see more about them soon?

50 Years of LEGO: Nine Sets I Have Known and Loved

January 28, 2008 5:14pm

Ohh, man. I am damn near drunk on nostalgia.

I, too, never got the monorail, but I had the Blacktron and M-Tech kits, as well as a bunch of the "Space Police" kits that came out around the same time as M-Tech with the wicked red cockpits.

I've got a feeling a surprising amount of my next paycheck is going to buying lego kits.

Suburban family discovers hidden room filled with toxic mold and a taunting note

Where was the building inspector?

When I bought a house about 2 years ago, I had to hire a building inspector to come through the house and look for problems like this, and the loan company also sent their own inspector in before they'd agree to sign off on the house. I can't believe that two trained inspectors would have missed something so blatant.

First/Worst: Online Nickname?

December 10, 2007 6:12am

Heh. Way back in the "Prodigy" days I just used my username "NNDD40B", and then decided to try "-=CyberFreak=-" as something nicely inconspicuous.

Blind Zen Archer came from Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books, and after awhile I got tired of typing the whole thing out, I shortened it to "BZArcher" and that's stuck for quite awhile.

X-Wing fighter rocket -- build and launch videp

October 15, 2007 12:37pm

If I'm reading stuff right, I think they just used too much balsa wood for key structure points. A more durable frame might well have survived the launch. Hopefully if they take another shot, they'll adjust the build and we'll see it go!

TRON Sequel Given Green, Pulsing Light

September 11, 2007 1:40pm

Honestly? I thought the controls were a bit sketchy, but the story beneath it was really good. The ending left a lot of hooks that could have made a sequel interesting (TRON 2.5?)

I never read the 2.0 comic that SLG was putting out, but the preview pages also looked nice.

If you're really interested in it, you can get it pretty easily at half price books or similar discount stores. (I couldn't find my old copy recently, and wanted to play it again, and found it at a HPB for $5.)

My advice is to play it with cheat codes on, get the story (especially all the little emails!) and enjoy yourself without having to worry about the sometimes skosh controls.
