Problematic logo design from Adidas and Au

July 18, 2008 12:05pm

@ #43 "What if it was a swastika?,/i>"

What if it was a giant inflatable penis?

But it's not, it is some random double-S.

I think it comes down to the fact that when you have two esses, they will look like two esses.

Problematic logo design from Adidas and Au

Maybe it is because I am 20, but I probably wouldn't have noticed if the headline didn't say "problematic logo design." I read the headline, looked at the picture and said: "Hey, those esses kind of look like the SS symbol, except that they don't look like lightning bolts, and they aren't positioned right."

These are the kind of stories that make you want to lock yourself in your house and never leave. HeyHeyHey's picture is even more frightening.

Hey cool. Just 2 weeks ago I made a list of all the books I have ever read (that I could remember).

@5:

But nouning verbs and verbing nouns is what the English language is all about, especially in the case of verby nouns like impact.

"Woot," "Malware," "Fanboy" enter Merriam-Webster dictionary

I don't know when this happened, but apparently google is a word according to Merriam-Webster. It would seem they are fairly good at keeping their dictionary up to date.

Does anyone know what their policy for removing words from the dictionary is? There are plenty of 'words' that don't seem to have any place in modern English, are they marked as archaic, or are they removed? Likewise, there are plenty of words that are used extensively for a short period of time, and then fall into misuse forevermore (for example the term xerox used to mean copying, In 20 years, I would find it unlikely that anyone will be using it), are they removed or just marked as slang?

I can't say I have ever heard netroots or infinity pool before this article. I had to look both of them up. To be fair, there are a lot of words in the dictionary that I don't know, but I somehow have trouble believing that these words are in common enough usage to warrant being in the dictionary.

Wow, Shannon posting on BoingBoing. It's like blogging worlds colliding.

Tattooed living zombie

If anyone is interested, here (site extremely NSFW) is another interview with him

I have nothing against large-scale tattoos. This guy comes off as kind of an idiot, but I'm also sure he seemed that way long before he got inked.

Dell challenges the Eee with... the E?!?!

eee:e :: 3:1 therefore the asus Eee PC > Dell E PC

Considering the fact that the new eee PCs are selling for $600-700, it almost works out perfectly.

Over $1bn in broken Xbox 360s could have been avoided for $10m

June 11, 2008 2:39pm

ENOCHREWT

Not to downplay the failure rate of the 360 or anything, but between 9 XBOXen and 3 PS2s, I really have to wonder whether you are doing anything with your consoles that would cause such high failure rates.

Are you storing your system in a really hot location, or a location with very little ventilation? Are leaving it on for a ridiculous number of hours? Is it just luck of the draw (so to speak)?

Of the 10ish friends with 360's, only one guy has had to send his back (which, I admit, is probably less than average), and we've done a lot of gaming on them.

I'm just glad that my 360 has the new chipset (bought it for GTA), so it isn't going to be a problem *crosses fingers*.

Damn it. Now I am going to be spending the rest of my day on the various sites I use seeing whether the code does anything.

Thanks Mr. Brownlee for wasting my day.

Mennonites in downtown LA

June 10, 2008 1:28pm

We have a large Mennonite population here in Manitoba. Most of them (well a lot of them anyway) live in the city, don't dress differently etc. We also have a lot who are more conservative though.

Round up: Subnotebook madness!

June 3, 2008 8:51am

KeithIs there some rational for making the Linux versions of the Asus machines with half the storage capacity of the Windows version?

My guess is that Asus is viewing Linux not as a proper competitor to Windows, but merely a free OS they can shove into the cheaper model in order to keep costs down. It also seems really odd that the Windows version would come out a bunch before the Linux version, but if they are waiting on it under the assumption that the component costs will go down, it could further the argument that they are putting Linux on it only because Linux is free (as in beer).

Round up: Subnotebook madness!

June 3, 2008 8:45am

Awesome breakdown Mr. Brownlee. I've been thinking about buying an eee or similar for a while now. I can't say this made the decision any easier (especially since things do seem to be trending towards more expensive).

The way I see it, The ACER sounds the nicest, but by the time it actually comes out, it easily could be looking either over-priced or under-speced. The MSI Wind seems pretty solid, but I don't see why the linux version is coming out later, and why it doesn't come with the battery or extra RAM. I guess it would be worth pointing out that the version of Ubuntu designed for these kind of laptops is finally official

It seems to me, that when it comes to a small, cheap, laptop with long battery life that runs linux , the best option remains the original eee.

Canadian airport security screener confiscates blocks tiny gun-shaped necklace charm

May 29, 2008 9:49am

Cory, If you think that Canada is inadequately prepared for the ever present voodoo threat, you are sadly mistaken. Haven't you ever wondered why so many airports "lose" your luggage? I'm sure in the name of security, they have already created tons of dolls which are being prodded by pins in surgical gloves.

Canadian border guards to check iPods for infringment

I saw this a couple of days ago in the Winnipeg Free Press. I don't really understand how they think this could work. People don't tend to label their music as legal or illegal.

Eyeball stickers to place over eyelids

February 15, 2008 8:14am

Wow, the comment review symbol to the right of each comment is wonderfully appropriate.

The guy in the picture looks like a psychopath, but maybe that's not the stickers fault. The kind of person who would think this is a good idea, probably is more likely to look a bit ...unbalanced.
