Dvorak funnies explain why your QWERTY habit needs to go
November 10, 2007 7:02pm
"I still can't get past the idea that "you can type faster this way" doesn't really have a practical manifestation."
It is practical in situations where you have to take dictation or transcribe something. Instances where speed and accuracy really do matter.
I don't know the story behind the court stenographer's little machine, but they are incredibly fast on them and their keyboards are unlike any other I know.
Again, it's all about what you use a keyboard for. If you're a transcriber, you want to be as fast and accurate as possible. If you're a writer, you want to be able to be as free as possible with your words. If you're writing a letter to grandma, you just need the letters to appear when you press a key.
Dvorak funnies explain why your QWERTY habit needs to go
November 10, 2007 6:58pm
"i don't care what these people say about there being limited ergonomic improvements and speed improvements. for me the speed improvement is more than 10% and accuracy easily more than 30%. not having to stretch for the most commonly typed letters does improve accuracy. that means less moving your right hand off the home row and using your weakest finger to backspace. which is of course another source of accuracy loss, when you miss the home row upon return."
This sort of plays into what I was saying earlier. Dvorak is fine for people like yourself, but probably not for everyone.
I sort of look at it the same way I look at high-end entertainment centers. I can understand how the image and sound quality is superior, how it gives you a more theatrical experience, etc. I would freely admit that it is overall a better way to watch TV. However, I'm perfectly fine with my old 27" Magnavox standard def set with no surround sound and I am not planning on investing time or money in changing it unless I really don't have much choice- and I think most people are on my side with that.
So to me it is less about speed and efficiency and more about comfort- and by comfort, I don't mean ergonomic comfort, I mean what you feel most mentally comfortable using. I know QWERTY. I understand it. It works for me. Dvorak may be much better, much faster, etc. but the advantage of QWERTY to me is I don't need to learn anything new and I am comfortable with the layout since I've used it all my life.
Dvorak funnies explain why your QWERTY habit needs to go
November 10, 2007 12:49pm
It seems to me that learning a keyboard layout that very few people actually use would be a detriment to most people. I'm sure it is very helpful if you need to type faster from what people are saying, but the lost productivity in not only learning it but retaining the knowledge of QWERTY in order to use computers that aren't yours would be a pain in the ass.
When I used to have a PC, I ran XP with a Lightstep shell that worked very differently than the standard Microsoft GUI. Admittedly, I found it faster and more efficient because of the way I had customized it. Almost everything was in right click context menus, there was a tiny mac-like dock, etc.
The problems were that- a) whenever I used someone's normal windows computer I got confused for a few minutes and b) whenever anyone else wanted to use my computer (i.e. wife, friends, etc.), they were totally flummoxed.
I think much like Linux, if you are really into computers and programming and stuff, it could be a great benefit to you. But Grandma knows QWERTY from her typewriter days and it ain't gonna change any time soon.
People eschew 'better' technology all the time. Betamax was smaller and higher quality than VHS but people preferred VHS tapes. SA-CD is higher quality than regular CDs, but hardly anyone buys them. Even now, Blu Ray and HD-DVD sales are pretty abyssmal because while the quality is inarguably superior to DVD, most people in this world were fine with the quality of VHS, let alone DVD.

Thank you, abb3w, for the long explanation.
Theresa: I'm not saying I am in the clear, that is actually the reverse of my point. ER PLC could easily send YouTube a takedown order or myself a cease and desist and I would abide by that without complaint.
The problem with the automated system is that they would get it taken off no matter what.
Here's a great example, a Star Wars fan film. Lucasfilm acknowledges outright that fan films are not only acceptable as long as they are non-commercial, but in fact help their franchise. This automated system could knock those off of YouTube, thus actually hurting Lucasfilm.

Well I'm not a lawyer, but as far as I know since I'm not making any money from it, nor ever intend do do so and don't malign their product in any way, it's fair use.
Automated copyright bots won't work
November 2, 2007 6:09am
I'm one of the people who could be affected by this. I make The Skeletor Show which redubs old He-Man cartoons. Now Entertainment Rights, PLC, the owners of the footage, have had a lot of chances to figure out I'm doing it (apart from being on BoingBoing, I've been in hundreds of newspapers, radio, etc.) so either they have their heads in the sand or, more likely, consider what I'm doing fair use since I don't make a dime off of it, I just do it for fun, and it doesn't hurt their product. I have even tried to contact them about getting the rights so I can sell it and they didn't respond. I take that as a sign that they don't really care about what I'm doing.
These sorts of measures will only upset fans. Entertainment Rights, PLC doesn't seem to have a problem with me, but this new software would take my work off of YouTube.
Now I could be wrong. They could feel what I'm doing is piracy, but they have never sent YouTube a takedown notice or even suggested what I am doing is violating copyright.
It's cases like mine where this sort of thing is going to essentially destroy what I do for my own (and others') entertainment, something that makes no money and is just done in fun.
Imagine if they did this with Red vs. Blue. Initially they didn't have any permission from Bungie Studies to use Halo footage, but it got so big and popular that Bungie started actively supporting them.
No one has ever had a problem with what I've done... well, not a legal problem, some people think it sucks, but that's another story. I have used the show as an example of my work to send to prospective employers and have made a lot of friends from doing it. No one is losing money on what I do since they are seeing re-edited, re-animated, re-dubbed footage which, in the end, bears little resemblance to the original. This sort of software, if it worked, would block what I do.

Kropinski v. WPEC
In a civil suit against the World Plan Executive Council filed in 1985,[71] Robert Kropinski claimed fraud, psychological, physical, and emotional harm as a result of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs. The district court dismissed Kropinski's claims concerning intentional tort and negligent infliction of emotional distress, and referred the claims of fraud and negligent infliction of physical and psychological injuries to a jury trial. The jury awarded Robert Kropinski $137,890 in the fraud and negligence claims. The appellate court overturned the award and dismissed Kropinski's claim alleging psychological damage. The claim of fraud and the claim of a physical injury related to his practice of the TM-Sidhi program were remanded to the lower court for retrial, and the parties then settled these remaining claims out of court.[72]

Two lawsuits were filed as a result of a stabbing at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa on March 1, 2004[73] The families of the murdered student and a student who was assaulted earlier in the day have sued MUM and the Maharishi Vedic Education Development Corporation. Their separate suits, filed on February 24, 2006, allege that the twice-daily practice of Transcendental Meditation, which the university requires of all students, can be dangerous for people with psychiatric problems. They also charge the university with failing to call the police or take action to protect students from a violent, mentally ill student.[74][75]

Paul is also a racist. From here (and elsewhere too):
Paul reported on gang crime in Los Angeles and commented, “If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be.”
“Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the `criminal justice system,’ I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal,” Paul said
Paul also wrote that although “we are constantly told that it is evil to be afraid of black men, it is hardly irrational. Black men commit murders, rapes, robberies, muggings and burglaries all out of proportion to their numbers.”

That's supposed to be a good thing? I'm all for independent and low-budget productions but most of the time they don't work very well with sci-fi unless you're looking for a laugh.
Also, aside from her non-speaking role in Dogma, has Alanis Morisette done any acting since You Can't Do That on Television? And wasn't the protagonist in the novel a man?

Yeah, I also think they're pretty tacky. You can't beautify everything and I think in the case of a satellite dish, you're going to have a real hard time making it both attractive and functional. To me, this is the satellite dish equivalent of fake wood paneling on a station wagon.

October 28, 2007 7:26pm
Pyros, I have nothing to add because you put it better than I could have myself. :)
Failed futuristic predictions
October 28, 2007 3:24pm
I suppose you're right, Pyros. The predictions fail to see the potential of the invention, but I think that's going back to the old chestnut of necessity being the mother of invention. People don't understand the way to practically use something until someone finds a real need.
The Wright plane could go a few hundred feet, slowly. Other planes of the era did similar and failed, to the point that in 1908 in The War in the Air, H.G. Wells predicts that by 1914, the airplane would be deemed impractical and another heavier-than-air flying machine (an ornithopter) is invented. I think the issue here is that many of these inventions, to realize their potential, you need some far-sightedness.
However, many of the lines don't call the inventions useless... like the telephone one. They said 'the device is inherently of no value to us,' which is the important thing. They were not saying it would not be useful, just not to them. And they were essentially right (until the last few decades anyway).
So I think you have three different types of 'predictions' (for lack of a better word) here- excluding urban legend quotes that is. The first is the truly stupid statement:
"Space travel is bunk." -- Sir Harold Spencer Jones, Astronomer Royal of the UK, 1957, two weeks prior to Sputnik orbiting the Earth.
I mean that's just phenomenally stupid since there had already been non-orbital high-altitude rocket launches before Sputnik. A modified V-2 rocket with a fly for payload did it soon after WWII in the U.S.
The second is the short-sighted statement:
"The cinema is little more than a fad. It’s canned drama. What audiences really want to see is flesh and blood on the stage." -– Charlie Chaplin, actor, producer, director, and studio founder, 1916.
If you look at film up to that point, he was pretty much right. Movies were like a carnival attraction until then. An interesting curiosity, but without much of a compelling storyline and, more importantly, no dialogue. It took people like Chaplin to bring stagecraft to film. It took the innovation of himself and others in the late teens and early twenties to transform film from a novelty to a huge entertainment medium.
The third is out of context:
"The world potential market for copying machines is 5000 at most." -- IBM, to the eventual founders of Xerox, saying the photocopier had no market large enough to justify production, 1959.
Note the word is in that sentence. It's not a prediction. I think it is obvious, considering how expensive the first Xerox copiers were, that IBM thought the market would be too small at the manufacturing price to be able to sell it successfully. Photocopying technology had existed since the 1930s, so it is not as if IBM had no idea what it was.
Failed futuristic predictions
October 28, 2007 1:18pm
A lot of them are out of context definitely. For example-
«This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.»
A memo at Western Union, 1878 (or 1876).
Bell's original telephone DID have too many shortcomings. Until the 20th century, you had to practitally shout into them. The film Topsy-Turvy has a wonderful scene reproducing it.
The fact that until the 70s, Western Union continued to use telegraphy to send messages, I don't see that quote as a bad prediction at all.
A lot of other quotes are similar- the claim of airplanes being useless for warfare for example. The Wright Flyer and other early airplanes WERE useless for warfare because they were basically wood and paper. The airplanes used in WWI were only usable due to some major improvements to design.
In other words, while there are a few very silly predictions in there, many of them make perfect sense in the context of the time in which they were said- usually because the invention of the time really was as useless as they claimed it was.

October 9, 2007 7:48pm
Technically, this was not sped up. If it were, the pitch would raise and I would wager be beyond the range of human hearing and probably beyond the range of most speakers too.
They just used the time compression feature on any one of a number of current digital audio programs, but time compression does not speed things up, it removes. It uses some complex algorithms I can't pretend to understand to take out the 'least important' bits of the sound, then removes those gaps to make the file shorter. Usually, it's just shaving off bits of silence, but when you do it overkill like this, it's just taking lots and lots of random, very short, cuts out of a very long file.
Yahoo Music to record execs: No more DRM, ever
October 9, 2007 6:44am
I think you're right about the small labels getting big and that's great because it's virtually the only decent music coming out anymore.
But it's just amazing to me that after cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, the entertainment executives still don't get that people will happily buy a product they think is worth their money even if you can get it fairly easily for free. This is why salad in a bag sells so well.
Yahoo Music to record execs: No more DRM, ever
October 9, 2007 5:57am
I've said it before, I'll say it again. The music and movie industry aren't losing money because people are pirating, they're losing money because their movies and music suck.

Rushkoff on 9/11 conspiracies
September 23, 2007 7:48am
I keep telling this to conspiracy theorists (a group of which I am not a member):
Let's say they are absolutely right, that it is a conspiracy created by the Bush administration, let's say, even, that the craziest conspiracies are right- that they were remote controlled drone planes that crashed and then they also blew up the buildings... just assume for a second that it's all true-
What difference does it make?
A) Even if it's true, most people won't believe it.
B) The damage has already been done.
C) There's nothing us peons could do about it anyway.
D) A government powerful enough to orchestrate an attack like that already has so much in control that they ain't goin' anywhere.
So I am not going to attack the conspiracy theorists' beliefs, I simply don't see what difference it makes if they're right. We'd still be in Iraq, we've already gotten rid of Haebas Corpus and legalized torture, etc.
So let's say you're right. Good for you. You know THE TRUTH(tm)... I'm sure all the soldiers that are going to die over the years we'll be stuck in Iraq will really care.

You can already do that, Mike. ISPs already offer multiple levels based on bandwidth. It just isn't regulated like it could be.

For those not in the know, 'Bomb' in this case refers to covering a place with graffiti.

Germany bans all music and video copying, including personal use -- UPDATED
September 21, 2007 11:47am
And how do they plan to stop it? Ban the sale of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs? Can you go over the border to, say, Austria and just buy them there? Are they going to do home inspections to make sure you haven't made personal copies? How can they insure those copies weren't legitimately burned from an iTunes purchase? How about iPods in general? Is putting your CD collection onto your iPod an illegal copy?
What about older tech- can you tape a TV series with your VCR? Record music with a cassette?
I have no idea how they could even begin to impliment this.

"Who is to say this innocent nun is not in fact an al-Qaeda operative? A better question might be 'who wants to take the chance'?"
I want to take the chance. I would rather take the 1 in a bajillion chance that there might possibly be a nun with a bomb to avoid the indignities of someone being paid near minimum wage frisking people at random.
Seriously, people... we've had air travel for over a century now and somehow we have avoided every other plane blowing up or crashing into buildings without all this crap. Would frisking have discovered the box cutters the 9/11 terrorists used? I doubt it since I am sure they weren't stupid enough to make it obvious if they were stopped.
Once again, none of the airport security measures post-9/11 do anything but provide a band-aid solution to a problem that is probably unavoidable. As long as you have public transport, you'll have someone trying to use it to kill people.

I agree with that measure, but I was referring to all of the ridiculous pre-flight stuff. All the extra we have to go through now- pouring out liquids, showing off others in clear bags, taking off our shoes, etc.
I seriously doubt any of that has stopped any attacks.

Airport guard falsely accuses NetStumbler.com creator of making death threat
September 18, 2007 12:53pm
I was actually thinking... what, of all the new security measures put in place since 9/11, would have stopped those attacks? They were done with box cutters, something which the old metal detectors and x-ray machines should have turned up.
How many planes have been blown up with shoe bombs? How many have been blown up with secretly smuggled liquids? Yet THESE are the things we're worried about. What's to stop someone from putting semtex up his ass like a cocaine mule... we can't prepare for everything, but I don't see how we have been made any safer by all of this.

A "true hero?" Whose life did he save? What dangerous criminal did he capture? Sure, it takes a lot of bravery to do the stuff he did, but calling someone a hero for doing dangerous stunts for money is a bit silly when there are actual heroes doing really heroic things in the spirit of altruism.
I hope the man is all right, but I would not call him a hero. That goes to the people trying to find him.

Well it sounds like you agree with him on a lot of things, but I'm not seeing the half-truths. For example, I think most people know what 'a woman's right to choose' refers to. Paul has voted against abortion rights multiple times. Many people, myself included, feel that this is one of the many things which makes him an unacceptable candidate.
It seems to me that you are taking offense at the criticisms of someone you feel is right for the job, but rather than addressing those criticisms rationally, you've chosen to mock and deride.
