Space aliens invade Canada
May 1, 2008 11:34am
I'd like to know where exactly; I'd pop round and see for myself.
Copyright crazies gaining steam in Canada
April 26, 2008 7:44am
I don't know McTeague from Adam, but it sounds like I'll be writing some more letters to MPs today.
And I will indeed use the nefarious powers of the internet to 'threaten' politicians whose policy positions I dislike. It's part of my democratic right as a Canadian citizen, just like writing a letter to my MP.
Chopping down trees to make books is good for the environment, provided you then line your walls with bookcases
April 20, 2008 8:48am
@14 - I'm feeling a bit green with envy over that house!!
I have my bookshelves on an exterior wall, but given that I rent (and thus am moving every year or two), I've had to cap my numbers at around 500. Even so, that's still a lot of books to shift.
Totally love Cory's office; it looks comfortable, cosy, and with enough interesting stuff that I imagine most of his visitors are hard-pressed to leave.
Bell Canada: We have to screw up other ISPs' connections or our retail customers will suffer by comparison
April 17, 2008 7:54pm
I'm currently looking for a new ISP (I'm a Shaw customer in Western Canada), and I'm at the point where I really can't find an ISP that doesn't throttle its traffic, or have its traffic throttled by the telco that it leases from.
Does anyone have a list of ISPs that don't throttle?
Jacko's Neverland Ranch needs some TLC
March 11, 2008 4:51am
@19 - Bowie did the sensible thing, and it was 10 years and $55million. I bet he invested it... Jacko probably frittered it away.
I wonder if these wealthy fans will manage to 'save' Neverland or not. Hopefully not.
200 free copies of my next novel, Little Brother, for high-school newspaper reviewers
March 10, 2008 7:42pm
Awesome idea - almost makes me wish I was in highschool again so I could take advantage :)
ETech: BoingBonic Convergence
March 6, 2008 9:22pm
Looking good BBers!
@4 - is it because Cory's wearing a hat? Or that Xeni's the one without glasses? Or that Pesco hasn't any hair?
Minimalist end-table with smart bookspine saver
March 4, 2008 11:34am
Antinous, I'd buy two - one for each cat. But I wouldn't be putting glasses of water on top, because if they start startling each other, that water's not going to last very long...
Metblogs had some work done
March 3, 2008 3:32pm
I know I've had a long day when I read the headline as "Methblogs"...
Poor Customer Service is Killing Sprint
February 27, 2008 12:53pm
The bottom line is not always about money. Any company that micromanages their employees like that deserves to lose money.
Off switch needs key to be turned back on
February 25, 2008 6:33pm
I'd like one of those key switches to be rigged to the outlets for the television, so then I wouldn't have to listen to my roommate watching tv all night long.
Edith Piaf, superspy
February 19, 2008 2:51pm
@ Kit: That advert was really dreadful.
I was aware of her work with the French resistance, but I don't think it was ever covered in her autobiography, or in recent films (La Mome).
Fine news
February 3, 2008 9:33am
Congratulations!!
Absolutely fantastic news to wake up to this morning.
Amazon MP3 store to go global
January 27, 2008 10:20am
Glad to hear it - I've been waiting for it to be more than just the USA.
Canadian MPs who are vulnerable on copyright -- how we'll win the war on the Canadian DMCA
January 23, 2008 8:29pm
@ Powers (#1) - I'm in Rob Anders' riding, where a lamppost with a Conservative sign on it could win the election. Nevermind that we're also the riding of the University of Calgary. Too many stalwart Tories here.
Deals: Electric Kettle on Amazon for $12
January 4, 2008 5:59pm
My electric kettle is my best friend - I use it many times daily (esp. when I'm not at work). So this Canadian finds it as useful as the Brits. I even grew up with electric kettles, though my mother did have a stovetop one for awhile. I used to hate how long it took for the water to heat though.
Definitely an essential kitchen gadget, and well worth the (very little) counter space it takes up in my small flat.
Haunted Mansion spiel to be scripted
January 3, 2008 4:26pm
I was at Disneyland once, in '98, and the improv of the Jungle Cruise and the Haunted Mansion were the best parts of the park. (Sure beat the cruddy Mulan-themed parade).
Such a shame to squelch the improv. :(
How Circuit City Committed Suicide
December 30, 2007 6:22pm
The Source (by CC) store nearest to me has had some helpful sales people, but I rarely ever expect sales people in retail in general to be very smart. The turnover rate in retail jobs here (from what I can tell) is pretty stepp, and even in my current job, the long-lived employees have only been there 1.5yrs.
These days I usually do my research online, then figure out what store might have what I need.

I bet Cory would get one of these capsaicin molecule ones :)
Canadian DMCA cancelled (again) (for now)
December 13, 2007 9:55am
I sent another round of succinct emails first thing this morning; I'll continue to update and send more emails throughout the entire process if they don't change things up. I hope that now it has been delayed they will actually take the public's view into account in wording the bill.
CANADIANS! Tomorrow is your best chance to fight the Canadian DMCA! Event in Calgary, national phone-in
December 7, 2007 4:53am
It's a shame I have to work and can't get to the open house. I will be calling though, and expressing my regret.
HOWTO Fight Canada's coming DMCA copyright law
December 3, 2007 4:59am
I have doubts that my MP will even get off his butt to do anything (I am unfortunate enough to live in Rob Anders' riding!) but I will definitely be sending letters to Jim Prentice, Anders, and the lot. Does Mr Geist have a form letter of some sort that I could alter to my tastes?
Brits! Petition the PM to stop national children's database
November 30, 2007 5:00am
That is incredibly scary to read. However, that it is happening in the UK doesn't surprise me (as previous posters have mentioned) - the UK is home to a massive CCTV network, among other things.
I would hope that this doesn't pass, though.

Which torrent client for Mac uses encryption?
EFF proves Comcast is screwing with BitTorrent, releases instructions for testing your own ISP
November 29, 2007 4:57am
I'm pretty sure my ISP (Shaw cable in Canada) screws with Bittorrent too... it takes ages to download anything, and I have to reload the program when it slows to a tiny trickle.
I suspect there are more ISPs than we know who control their Bittorrent traffic.
Apple Must Be Outsourcing Its Customer Service for Christmas
November 25, 2007 2:00pm
I recently had to call to the Apple support line as my Macbook's battery was drastically losing capacity. (I'd found out that it was within the period where I could get a free replacement).
No matter when I call (early morning, later evening, etc.) I am nearly always on hold for at least half an hour. I've given up believing that "Based on current times, your wait should be X minutes long or less..."
I ended up having to call them again when I needed the DHL package re-routed to my work instead of my home address, and I was bounced around a couple times, again with more time on hold. And I've repeated my work address so often that it's burned into my brain.
So, overall, yeah, what I needed to get done was done, but I would've been much happier if I could have done it in less time. And I wish that there was an Apple store here, as I'd've just made an appointment with the Genius bar instead.

Band releases album on "obsolete" 3.5" floppy disc
October 9, 2007 6:59pm
Would be interesting if I actually had a floppy drive...
Can "girl games" transcend shopping, fashion and babies?
October 3, 2007 5:07pm
I'd certainly be bored to tears with this sort of game, but I know my cousins (girls of varying ages) would probably enjoy them. That being said, it would be one game of many, with most being more action or quest oriented.
(and just a quick note that my mother is addicted to the Mario games on the DS... and she's nearly 50. I can't see her playing anything really girly.)
eMusic selling DRM-free Random House audiobooks
September 22, 2007 4:33pm
It seems like pricing (though I too had to sign up via my current eMusic account) and it signed me up at $9.99/month for one audiobook, and I could upgrade to $19.99 for two (eMusic Audiobook Plus). And there's also the annual subscriptions, which offer a discount, but I couldn't get to those until I'd already signed up...
I'm not overly impressed with how that was done, but I may try out the service for awhile. I like audiobooks, and I'm glad they're DRM free. I've avoided audiobooks on iTunes due to the DRM.
US labels to Canada: stop giving us free money, we prefer to sue
September 16, 2007 10:18am
I've stopped buying CD-Rs because of the copying levy, even though I only was using them for data backups. They don't yet charge the levy on DVD-Rs, so I use those instead.
Of the dozen or so albums I've purchased in the last few months, the majority were purchased at shows, or were direct downloads. The more money that goes to the artists, the better.

Personally I'd be put off by the use of Bogart's face in that montage (never mind the hole in the elbow, which I didn't see until I tilted my glossy screen.)
