Strange singing wires lash downtown city square

Very cool to be covering the Big Bots. I hope you will take a look at the humorous lawn mowing robot at Phipps (I won't spoil it here). Also maybe you can find the one outside the library in Oakland because I couldn't.

Just what I need! A kitchen Dalek to exterminate dirty dishes.
HP Voodoo Envy packaged like luxury chocolates
July 10, 2008 12:53pm
What's cool about this is that the packaging doesn't seem to be all that excessive either. Instead of a disposable cushioning wrapper you get a reusable slip cover. The box looks like something I'd hold on to as well; much nicer than the corrugated cardboard you get with other computers even if it's shipped in another box.

There is something unreal about the cucumber slice.
iWood cases coming for iPhone 3G at the end of the month

mmmm... Digital smegma... such an accurate description.
iPhone 3G reviews in. Verdicts: praise, but nothing we weren't expecting
July 9, 2008 7:05am
Not a big enough antenna? This makes zero sense. Handheld GPS receivers are not much bigger than the iPhone and get turn by turn directions.
George Lucas and JJ Abrams, gloriously photoshopped.

One reason why Apple won't radically redesign the MacBook Pro
July 7, 2008 5:27pm
Also known as the Ghetto Eagle... A name that also works for the Lawrenceville Giant Eagle which I will only shop at for the bare essentials despite the fact that the Waterworks Giant Eagle is more than twice as far away. I'm not sure what the store smells like but it smells like something I don't want to eat.

Looks to be the North Side Giant Eagle
Obama bumper stickers for every state
July 3, 2008 8:32am
There are some good ones there, but most are fairly lame. Playing off state slogans is a good idea but most of them don't do that.
Californian drivers, put your phones down

I wouldn't worry about it. Just call the 800 number and explain the situation. You should still be covered for the flaw.

Quantum Mechanics. It's not gee-whiz lasers and robots but divergent realities and parallel universes are firmly grounded in scientific theory.

That wonder nipple calls to me. It's by far my favorite mobile input device. My latest laptop only has a trackpad and I really miss the precision of the mini-joystick. Plus it was much easier to position my hands for World of Warcraft.
Associated Press expects you to pay to license 5-word quotations (and reserves the right to terminate your license)
June 17, 2008 5:37am
This whole idea basically breaks scholarly works. The idea that they can revoke the license if they don't like what's done with it is absurd.
I supopose the way around it is to find out what AP member paper your author writes for and go straight to him or her for premission. That is unless AP holds all redistobution rights, which is probably true.

Help us identify mysterious joystick shaft
May 28, 2008 9:20am
You live across the Allegheny River from me. Well, across the river and downstream a bit. I agree that Shadyside is too expensive. Same thing with Southside Flats.
You can't be too far away from the vacant house that mysteriously blew up some months ago.
Help us identify mysterious joystick shaft
May 28, 2008 8:41am
Can't help you with the stick, but I'm curious as to what neighborhood in this fine city you live. From the tiny description I'm wanting to say Shadyside, but I could be way off.
Old filmstrip: "Bicycle Safety"

I didn't think it would be funny. Then I remembered how much I enjoy Mr. Hilter. Anway I found this to be nearly as funny.
GRADED: The Worst '10 Worst Consoles' List of All Time
May 21, 2008 6:45am
#17 The original author had nothing to support the inclusion of the Wii on the list. He treats the Nintendo franchises (Mario & Zelda) with reverence in previous entries and then says that Nintendo is doing the "same old shit". Also apparently we are being fed "trite". I wonder what that tastes like...
Generally speaking, sales are a good way to determine the success of a console. Since the Wii continues to sell like crazy it's very hard to call it the "worst console of all time".
Amstrad GX4000 returns to haunt list of failed consoles
May 20, 2008 10:15am
The SNES came with Super Mario World, not Super Mario Land, and the 32x was an expansion rather than a full fledged console. The Wii is at #1 just to bring in page views. The whole thing stinks.
Nanosoccer at RoboCup Open this weekend

The RoboCup US Open will not be hapening at CMU but at the Carnegie Science Center on the North Shore.
Amnesty UK's videos on China's human rights record and the Olympics
May 5, 2008 5:59am
I don't want to sound like a total asshole, but the window to protest the Beijing Olympics has pretty much passed. Maybe they should have made a bigger stink when the IOC was evaluating host cities.

@ACB: It's 473ml (roughly). Shame bad beer is a universal constant, still Stella is far from the worst.
Leet Lord's Prayer
April 24, 2008 9:19am
@13
I know exactly where you are coming from and I'd argue that while this is indeed a more accurate representation of oldschool leetspeak it still goes a little too far. At least the people I remember on BBSs (dude, its plural not possessive) and IRC wouldn't go so far as to spell out every single word in such a manner. Just the ones they thought could throw up flags to the sysop or perhaps Echelon (yes, they were often that full of themselves).

US customs bar fashionista druggie writer for "moral turpitude"
March 21, 2008 8:37am
#9 If you rtfa you will see that he was traveling under the visa waiver program and could be denied entry if he was convicted of a felony or addicted to narcotics. So, yes there is a list of reasons for which a traveler can be denied entry. The fear here is that he is statistically likely to commit a crime while in the US so they don't want to let him in without doing a deeper background check via the visa application process.
The scary thing here is how people don't look any further than a slightly skewed writeup on Boing Boing. The link to the CNN story is right there and it's not a very long read.

HotPlug: transport a PC without powering it down (and letting drive crypto kick in)
February 22, 2008 6:33am
I know it's the easiest way to show a computer running, but am I the only one who finds it weird that they kept showing the monitor to prove that the power was still on? It made sense in the first video where they use a power strip, but in all of the other segments they are providing power to a single outlet.
