Against Ben Stein's wishes, lizards rapidly evolve after introduction to island

And how can we be sure this is actually "evolution", and not, say, a change of diet?
Soviet kids' book about robots

I have to +1 the awesomeness of Mr Petit's "Anselme Lanturlu" albums, which are marvels of vulgarisation. I was put off at first by the simplicity of the drawings, but don't be!
I hold "The Black Hole" in my personal pantheon for making me understand space-time curvature (and the most extreme example, black holes).
I strongly urge you to check out his other books, available translated at Savoir Sans Frontieres. Scroll down a bit; yes, the site layout pretty much sucks.
As others have pointed out, the author also holds some excentric opinions such as the existence of UFOs, which has pretty much discredited him in the scientific community. It doesn't diminish the quality of his vulgarisation, though.
New York Sun column: "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone"

George Carlin would be proud. (I mean that in a good way).
I fully agree with this Mom, and wish to raise my kids (when I'll have them) in such a way. I want my kids to know their way around the world, and realize as soon as possible that the world is a wonderful place, and there aren't monsters at every corner.
"Mafia/Werewolf" IRC Game, Tomorrow at 1PM EST
April 10, 2008 12:20pm
That was a lot of fun to watch. Will you be posting the logs of the game? Do you intend to do this again sometime? It's not the same thing if its not BB-sponsored ;)
Man installing satellite TV kills wife

I also immediately thought of a Darwin award, (I'm the kind of guy who finds the idea of removing all safety labels and "letting the problem solve itself" hilarious) but this is just awful :(
Plus, I'm cynical enough to doubt this will lead the guy to swear off firearms...

@3: Jennee means that it's a pain to download each of the 13 files individually.
I agree.
Nine Inch Nails made at least $750k from CC release in two days
March 5, 2008 7:52am
I have to play devil's advocate here and point out the critical difference between artists such as NIN and Radiohead and your typical band: fan base and promotion.
NIN and Radiohead are huge, and they now don't need to spend a dime on promotion: fans are watching their every move anyhow and they get free coverage (such as this post). Also, people are ready to pay 300$ for collector's edition of their stuff.
That's not the case for the huge majority of bands and other creators out there. On a related note, how do you get recognition and promotion, Cory? You don't rely on the traditional circuits, I guess :)
Draft Larry Lessig for Congress!

I dunno. He wants to fight corruption, but I'm afraid he'd get mired in the politicking marsh that is congress...
Video game death animation re-enactments (to do in LA)

Will they be doing death animations from Metal Slug (series)? They should do death animations from Metal Slug.
Angular attic staircase -- cheap, steep, and does the trick
January 19, 2008 9:09am
There was a similar staircase in my grandparents' duplex flat in Paris. It was as #1 describes. I wonder how long the concept has existed: I used to be told my grandfather invented it :)
Sarkozy to abolish GDP, defend against sovereign funds and other predators
January 11, 2008 5:12am
I'm french. And american. Yeah, worst of both worlds.
I didn't want to return to the USA while Bush was still around. However, I now think it's time to go...
I'm ashamed, horribly ashamed. (That said, the socialist opposition was even more ridiculous)
Nintendo cross-stitches
January 11, 2008 4:47am
I love these!
In fact, it's a painful coincidence: my ex was working on a pixel-character cross-stitch sleeve for my DS, shortly before we broke up. Now I'll never have it :( (and no, that's not the worst part of the break-up :p)
Damn you Cory, for making me impressed and nostalgic at the same time! Is there a word for that emotion? :)

Universal Music CEO: Record industry can't tell when geeks are lying to us about technology
November 27, 2007 6:10am
I am so, totally, utterly, unsurprised.
I mean, it's not a CEO's job to understand technology. His role is to make business decision, based on information provided to him by his cronies. Business is "people" skills, not "techie" skills.
However, this does indeed not excuse the company's continued incompetence. After all, content industries are inherently dependent on the technology housing/transporting their content. But most importantly, if they lack the proper skills, they have to obtain them. As other commentors pointed out, there exist agencies for this kind of thing. I'm surprised if the CEO has to be on the front line of the recruitment effort!
Dinosaurs, you say?

Hey, this gives me a chance to spout my theory on the evolution of violence! And attempt to deviate the thread from definition wars ;)
Here goes:
There are three stages in the reaction to violence:
1) "Strike your enemy seven times as hard as he strikes you." The basic idea is to discourage violence by warning you that the revenge will be much worse. It has the huge flaw of encouraging violence escalation, and turning a percieved slight into a full-scale war (as illustrated in this text).
2) "An eye for an eye" (Code of Hammurabi, Law of Talion) This tries to fix the escalation of violence. Problem is, we humans are imperfect, and will perceive intent where there was none, and easily fall back to the vendetta stage.
3) "Turn the other cheek" (Jesus, Gandhi) This tries to completely defuse the cycle of violence. Some people perceive it as a sign of "weakness".
Culturally, I think we still haven't learnt our lesson from that guy who got nailed (literally) for suggesting we be nice to each other, for a change, and morally remain at the second stage.
Flame on!
