I know a good 50 or 60 amputees, through my writing about disability. They are doctors, lawyers, runners, swimmers, artists, moms, dads, teachers, letter carriers, program directors, what have you. Not one of them is bloated, inarticulate or fucked-up. I'm not sure if any of them smoke, but I'm sure none of them chain smoke. I agree there's a lot of corporate glitz in Mullins' style. Not sure where this view of "average" amputees comes from, though....

  To take these recommendations for awesome, left-of-center jazz and quasi-jazz and other beautiful amalgams a step further, everybody here interested should take a listen to the New Orleans bands Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship?, Hurray for the Riff-Raff, the Herringbone Orchestra, the Panorama Jazz Band and the Loose Marbles. All of them are doing strange and wonderful things with old musical forms. Gorgeous modern antiquarian jams. It's a scene that's not quite a scene, if you dig what I mean....
