Commented on Matt Logue's "Empty Los Angeles" photography book
I've lived in LA on and off since 1990 and once in a while, while riding around on my motorcycle, the streets are so empty Morrissey's "Everyday is like Sunday" comes back to me. It can look like a ghost...

Commented on Lou Jing, half black Chinese girl, sparks race debate in China
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that we would ever be homogeneous, I realize that within relatively homogeneous nations there's still classism, colorism, ageism, etc. I'm sure someone here could make the argument that it's "human nature" or something. But...

Commented on Lou Jing, half black Chinese girl, sparks race debate in China
Think what a peculiar time we live in, where people are still seemingly distinct. How long will that last? A few hundred more years? I'm calling it here: the future of the world will be something like filipinos...dark skinned asiatics...

Commented on Transborder Immigrant Tool helps Mexicans cross over safely

Commented on Age of the Informavore
This is so true. I notice it everyday. Half my brain is on the internet. People don't make firm plans anymore, just loose agreements to be closeby at sometime-ish and rely on cellphones to find each other. This behavior probably...

Commented on What Role Should GM Food Play in the Future of Agriculture?
Famine is caused by problems of distribution, not production, as many would have you believe. Amartya Sen won a Nobel prize for his work on this. There are several problems with GMO (or rather, transgenic modification) as I see it....

Commented on Sawfish: mining the forgotten forests of the sea
They've been "mining" underwater trees forever. Pre-Revolutionary War Dutch farmhouses in the NYC area have roof shingles from cedar that were mined from swamps in New Jersey. They're still in use, some 300 years on......
