Commented on Social Media in Iran: Lessons Learned (Ethan Zuckerman)
I am looking for reports about bloggers/twitterers/activists in Iran being arrested after having their anonymity blown, possibly through electronic surveillance. Any links to reliable sources would be much appreciated....

Judging from my cat's reactions, it says something like "Wake up! Food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food, food."...

Commented on Pirate Bay judge had conflict of interest: mistrial?
# 13: From what I've been able to figure out, he receives a salary from an interested party. That goes a bit beyond "expertise"....

Commented on Pirate Bay judge had conflict of interest: mistrial?
yeah, "jäv" = disqualified, "förvånad" = surprised. "delikatessjäv" is, i suppose, the case when you're disqualified based on a _suspicion_ of a conflict of interest that, even when the conflict is not blatant, would affect the court's credibility....

Commented on Twins commit perfect heist?
Don't have a twin? Don't worry, sometimes looking like a hippie will do. It's 1972 and three German radicals are on trial for various acts of sabotage. Two of them, Baumann and Weisbecker, are expected to be released on parole....

Commented on Russia: Journalist and Human Rights Lawyer Slain in Double Murder
I should stop feeding the extremely suspicious troll, but here's an article on Stas and Skat that might be interesting to everyone: Russia: Crimes Without Punisment Checnya's secret prisons and Markelov's work on them: HRW: Torture Victim Abducted in Chechnya...

Commented on Russia: Journalist and Human Rights Lawyer Slain in Double Murder
I only found links related to kidnappings, not "secret prsions" You missed this, for example: "For he was practically the only Russian lawyer who worked on controversial cases in Chechnya itself. Until quite recently, Stanislav had acted as defense counsel...

Commented on Russia: Journalist and Human Rights Lawyer Slain in Double Murder
spirit_spirit, Here you miss the picture when you are talking about opressing minorities/dissidents. No. Just because one person that Markelov defended was not, according to your standards, a victim of a human rights violation, doesn't mean that none of his...

Commented on Russia: Journalist and Human Rights Lawyer Slain in Double Murder
spirit_spirit, you say "...are not usually called human rights lawyers" - but I dispute this. The best-known human rights lawyers that I can think of - and Markelov was one of them - do work mostly within the existing civil/criminal...

Commented on Russia: Journalist and Human Rights Lawyer Slain in Double Murder
Spirit spirit, what's your point? He was well known already before his death for representing victims of police & military brutality and campaigning against the war in Chechnya and for civil liberties, among other causes. How does he not deserve...

Commented on Russia: Journalist and Human Rights Lawyer Slain in Double Murder
A friend's necrology on Anastasia Baburova (the post misspells her last name) paints a picture of a spirited, idealistic young woman. Apparently she ran after Markelov's shooter and attempted to stop him: not necessarily a smart move but without a...

Commented on Can ACLU and other advocacy orgs be journalists too?
I think that this is a good thing. Not that advocacy orgs should try to mimic news organizations: they have a position and should write from it, openly, without watering anything down. However, a couple of journalistic tricks and a...

Commented on Apes, legal personhood and the plight of Nim Chimpsky
http://www.salon.com/books/int/2008/03/31/Nim_Chimpsky/ The saddest part, to me, is this: "The former graduate students in New York believe that Nim had no idea he was a chimpanzee. One of them suggested to me that Nim might have thought he was going to...
