Commented on Vote for the best Sesame Street segments
As stated in the entry, this is one week of a 5-week poll. This is the 90s poll, I expect the other decades will be forthcoming or have already passed....

Commented on "Chap-Hop History" by Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer, played on a banjolele
As a longtime Boing Boing reader, I am shocked by the revelation that a man can play the ukulele....
-
Commented on Science Question from a Toddler: All Eyes on the Turtle
There's actually some neat research on the pre-natal visual capacity of animals with transparent egg-sacs. For example, scientists have trained cuttlefish to prefer shrimp as prey by showing shrimp to them as embryos....

Commented on Public fountains are disappearing because the concept of public is disappearing
If you're lumping charter schools in with private schools, you're not sufficiently informed about them. I'm done with this thread....

Commented on Public fountains are disappearing because the concept of public is disappearing
@Ito, That is very nontypical nationally. A pretty standard MA example is here: http://excelacademy.org/fam-application.html And the FAQ at the US Charter Schools page (http://www.uscharterschools.org/pub/uscs_docs/o/faq.html#10) states: By law, charter schools must have a fair and open admissions process, conducting outreach and...

Commented on Public fountains are disappearing because the concept of public is disappearing
@Ito Kagehisa, Where do you live? What you have described sounds more like magnet schools or exam schools than charters....
-
Commented on Public fountains are disappearing because the concept of public is disappearing
@Misterjuju, If you want answers, stop asking questions based on misinformation. Charter schools don't have acceptance requirements. They don't keep out "undesirables". Please inform yourself better and try again....

Commented on Public fountains are disappearing because the concept of public is disappearing
At least in Massachusetts, charter schools are required by law to accept all students, with a lottery to determine who gets a spot. But yes, it's a shame that water fountains are disappearing....

Commented on Banksy mural accidentally painted over
Why is a city council painting someone else's property without their explicit consent?...

Commented on Addicted to exercise?
Am I correct that this is the same naloxone that's mentioned in yesterday's Boing Boing story about placebos?...

Commented on What would you do with a Class C IP block?

Commented on Visualizing a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book
It would be excellent to see a series of these. I suspect that the more highly rated titles would be visibly different....

Commented on Imaginary Foundation's All-Star Pattern Seekers Trading Cards
@Davep: The pattern I'm perceiving is 1 woman, 2 machines, and 21 men. And not one of them non-white. Good job, Imaginary Foundation!...

Commented on Buy Me A Shuttle-Bike Kit, Please
The propeller and pump both seem to be powered by a small roller set against the rear wheel. Very clever....

Commented on An hour with Virgin's in-flight WiFi
Is that the plane that had a passenger who was just trying to get to a connecting flight? Do you know if anything was done for her? It seems sort of unfair (by which I mean horrible) to spring this...

Commented on Polite Umbrella Contracts To Avoid Poking Others In The Eye
Toolbag @4: I understand all the words in the phrase "looks too much like a vampire squid" but I can't make the whole thing make sense. It's like something "tasting too much like chocolate" or "smelling too much like freash...

Commented on Photos of food and their sugar-cube equivalent
Apoxia @13, Yeah, you're not going to get a Twinkie at an organic supermarket. But given that it's Twinkies we're talking about, you could just have an American mail you a box. It's not like they'll go bad in transit....

Commented on Web Zen: TV Zen
Ill Lich @9: You're a little under-informed for a stalker, aren't you? Guðmundsdóttir isn't actually a family name, it's a patronymic (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_name) and she'd generally be referred to as simply "Björk" in Iceland....

Commented on Parent of gamer asks his son to honor the Geneva Conventions
Faustus @17, while exercise has many health benefits, there are many documented cases of fat patients suffering and dying because doctors didn't bother to look past their fatness. And the latest research on the amount of exercise needed for that...

Commented on Shark tea-infuser turns diffused tea into gore
On the tea = blood front, I used to sacrifice tea-bags to Quetzalcoatl in college. The high point is the spurts of tea when you squeeze the bag after ripping it from the still-steeping cup of tea....

Commented on A comment from Modusoperandi
I can't let this pass without pointing out Carl Muckenhoupt's brilliant Discordian version: I dreamed that I was walking down the beach with the Goddess. And I looked back and saw footprints in the sand. But sometimes there were two...
-
Commented on Kevin Kelly: Access is better than ownership
Groggyjava @56: Actually, history suggests that entertainment will be the last to go. In the (First) Great Depression, families would give up eating regularly before they'd sell their radio....
