Commented on Photos of Edward Gorey's house
Excellent book comprised of interviews with Gorey - Ascending Peculiarity. In some of the interviews, he discusses why his house is the way it is....

Commented on In praise of Kitchen Aid's customer service -- UPDATED
Unfortunately, my experience echoes Andrew's - the exact same problem, the exact same depots, and five months of trying to get them to do a simple replacement in order to fix the issue - with some seriously less-than-competent CSRs....

Commented on 4 Things to Consider Before You Try to Join the Amish
With a few notable exceptions, this has got to be one of the most ethnocentric discussions I've ever seen on this site - a site that normally includes some tolerance or even promotion of other cultures. You cannot accurately judge...

Commented on Reminder: BB Video Groove Armada Contest - Download Some MP3s, Win a 16GB iPod Touch
This video started during a lecture I'm attending when I came here to get a reference point for something I'd seen - I'm using Firefox 3 and Windows XP SP2 - please, embed something else or take the video down...

Commented on Canadian ISP that appears not to suck
@ #5 - They are - I've got several friends using them from Etobicoke to the Bloor/Dundas area. Although in one house it drops CONSTANTLY due to one issue in the line bell doesn't seem willing to fix....

Commented on Cemeteries surrounded by parking lots
The one here http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=43.325368,-79.828793&spn=0.0007,0.000982&t=h&z=20 Is right by the Burlington Ikea, and is most wonderfully gothic, including high iron fences. I've gone there to photograph a few times....

Commented on Twelve Hours Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old: the best parenting book I've read
@ #45 posted by Xopher: See if you can get the kid into a sleep clinic - I had the same problem, and it turned out this kind of waking was caused by sleep apnea, which has caused a WHOLE...

Commented on Ford will offer special key for teen drivers that changes vehicle features
I like the idea, but not for any kid of mine (any kid of mine will be an awesome driver) but for certain other members of my family, to whom I might occasionally have to loan my car. Particularly the...

Commented on Baconator: fantasy vs reality
I can't really look it up right now, but there was a very interesting case a few years ago where a fast food chain was actually sued for false advertising over using smaller-sized hand models in order to make the...

Commented on Rooibos tea made with espresso machine
I actually prefer the tea that comes out of my single-cup coffee maker - makes it much, much stronger, and makes me much more functional....
-
Commented on Floor "refinished" by drawing on it
While the creator indicates that it didn't leave a trace of glue, I have my doubts that after 'a year or two' it won't - think about it, leaving masking tape down for a day or two isn't bad either,...
-
Commented on How to watch videos while driving
At least in Ontario, this is seriously illegal, and they'll get you on every count they can dig up if you do it, including reckless - they busted a guy in london doing 140 on the 401 watching a DVD....
-
Commented on HOWTO make easy ice-cream cupcakes
What my mom always did was pick up cheap, flat-bottomed iced cream cones, and bake cake mix in the bottom of them, then top that with the iced cream itself. worked like a charm, way less messy....
-
Commented on UK photographer chased down and detained for taking pix at fun fair
I was once hassled in one of Toronto's larger downtown parks, for taking photos NEAR children (not of them, just close to them.) - The Parksworker kept telling me there was a law against it, and I kept ignoring him....
-
Commented on Bell Canada: We have to screw up other ISPs' connections or our retail customers will suffer by comparison
Here's hoping the CRTC just hangs them out to dry....

Commented on Farmers make a killing by killing 150,00 pigs for no reason
#52 - No, but someone with 20+ years doing fieldwork in the far north, before he became a professor, might. And it's far from the only animal skinned alive - ever heard of the practice of shucking bunnies? It was...

Commented on Farmers make a killing by killing 150,00 pigs for no reason
Seriously? We're back on the clubbing seals thing? According to my anthropology professors, that's by far the most humane way to do it - a bullet just poisons them, and ruins the hide to boot. They're still used quite well...
-
Commented on Free Range Kids, blog for raising kids without being freaked out about safety all the time
I remember at age eleven being mildly freaked out by my parents' request that I leave a school group at the ROM, take toronto's subway system downtown, and meet them for dinner (before going to a taping of the royal...

Commented on Accounts of trying to gets bats out of house
I live in an apartment building in ontario, canada, that has a bat infestation - significantly unfun. And here's the thing - as much as i like the vacuum idea, you can't kill bats around here. They're a protected species....
