-
Commented on Holiday Inn signs - now and then
I can see how the old sign might evince a bad reaction from the majority of people who would likely deem it old or seedy-looking, but the new one reminds me of the bland, nonspecific, family-safe packaging on bars of...

Commented on Denver Area Maker Meetup Thursday 4/23
Be there, or kindly square I shall be. Conversely: I'll be there *and* be square....

Commented on Bike with band name sticker shuts down airport
I have to chide the bike owner on this one. Anyone unfamiliar with the band could easily construe this as alarming. I'm not sure how you could not foresee that when going to the airport. I'm not defending the shrill,...

Commented on A Hypothetical Question to the Boing Boing Community: the Filmmaker and the Bittorrented Screener
Well, big distinction here: are we talking hyped Hollywood film (IE, Watchmen, have some have jokingly guessed) or smallish indy film without a lot of prehype? Indy film: since there's no pre-hype, the liklihood of people actively seeking this cut...

Commented on Worst Food in America 2009 edition
So...I think the message here is: just DO NOT eat at these suburban calorie parlour chains unless marched there at gunpoint, or visiting weird relatives in Maryland who, for some reason, think Olive Garden is fantastic....

Commented on Life at Wal-Mart
Mr. Platt: I agree that Barbara Ehrenreich's account of low-wage America rings false, but I believe that it is for the same reason that yours rings false, also. You and her both are, essentially, tourists. You're an upper class white...

Commented on Bush years in Onion headlines
@#3: I actually work for The Onion (not a writer) and I've become somewhat jaded, I don't laugh at the stories as much anymore. But these News In Brief Bush-injury ministories have become one of my favorite bits (well, that...

Commented on 1960s and 1970s Denver pop culture open thread
@64: OMG, Bonnie, I totally remember you from Teletunes. I was a total Rock Island/Ground Zero playa (if by 'playa' you mean bumming cloves and requesting that same godawful Front 242 song over and over and over and over...). And...

Commented on 1960s and 1970s Denver pop culture open thread
@21, brokenrobot Yeah. Blinky always seemed like the transient clown that actually was a transient. And I actually won a record off of Teletunes once, but I had to go up to the Wax Trax in Boulder (there's another one...the...

Hah! I honestly don't remember, but that sounds about right. (I lived in Evergreen and out crappy rabbit ears only picked up 2 and 6 and 12). Which reminds me... Channel 12, the used-to-be oddball PBS channel... I used to...

Commented on 1960s and 1970s Denver pop culture open thread
Ah, Blinky. His depressing-ass thrift store is still there, next to that other thrift store with antique dental surgery equipment and obsolete science apparatus. Celebrity Sports Center: Oh, lord. Seeing my lady classmates in bikinis at the tender age of...

Commented on A visit to Casa Bonita restaurant in Denver
I spent Christmas of 2007 there with a bunch of Brazilians; very surreal. Visit velveteenrobot at flickr for pictorial evidence. I was really, really shocked that my food was edible. I mean, not good. But edible....

Commented on Science of becoming Batman
@Chronophobe: A lot of smaller publishers cut costs with lousy cover designs, and that always seemed like foot marksmanship to me - I mean, the old saw notwithstanding, this is just going to give the impression that it's a third-rate...

Commented on RIP: Netscape Navigator (1994-2008)

Commented on Best Buy threatens blogger over someone else's parody
It's eventually going to get to the point where nastygrams invariably equal massive propagation of the offensive art/song/whatever as hundreds of blogs seek to defy corporate wrongheadedness...which means that these types of derivitave logos/songs/etc will become a super successful means...

Commented on Boing Boing tv: same old BB, but with talkies.
I like the idea! Not so sure about the talking-head approach, but this could be the beginning of something interesting. And any opportunity to see more Prelinger material put to good (re)use is fine by me....

IDEAL DENVER BIRTHDAY CA. 1987: 1) Ice Cream at Lickety Split, now known as ‘Liks’. Not nearly as good now, alas. 2) Celebrity Fun Center! Dangerous waterslides, unwinnable minigolf, and surly lifeguards. Huzzah! Celebrity has since been demolished. 3) Dinner...
